Watching The Wheels -- John Lennon

People say I'm crazy, doing what I'm doing
Well, they give me all kinds of warnings to save me from ruin
When I say that I'm okay, well, they look at me kinda strange
"Surely, you're not happy now, you no longer play the game"

People say I'm lazy, dreaming my life away
Well, they give me all kinds of advice designed to enlighten me
When I tell them that I'm doing fine watching shadows on the wall
"Don't you miss the big time, boy. You're no longer on the ball"

I'm just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round
I really love to watch them roll
No longer riding on the merry-go-round
I just had to let it go

Ahhh, people ask me questions, lost in confusion
Well, I tell them there's no problem, only solutions
Well, they shake their heads and they look at me as if I've lost my mind
I tell them there's no hurry, I'm just sitting here doing time

I'm just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round
I really love to watch them roll
No longer riding on the merry-go-round
I just had to let it go
I just had to let it go
I just had to let it go

I'm Free - The Who
http://youtu.be/uRD_gIoVOmY

I'M FREE- I'm free,
And freedom tastes of reality,
I'm free-I'm free,
AN' I'm waiting for you to follow me.

If I told you what it takes
to reach the highest high,
You'd laugh and say 'nothing's that simple'
But you've been told many times before
Messiahs pointed to the door
And no one had the guts to leave the temple!

I'm free-I'm free
And freedom tastes of reality
I'm free-I'm free
And I'm waiting for you to follow me.

How can we follow?
How can we follow?

I've been stuck in a rut for 40 years musically.  For me: Every part of life ties to a Rush song.

With FIRE 4 days away, I've been thinking this...

"Fly By Night"

Why try? I know why
The feeling inside me says it's time I was gone
Clear head, new life ahead
It's time I was king now -- not just one more pawn

Fly by night, away from here
Change my life again
Fly by night, goodbye my dear
My ship isn't coming and I just can't pretend

Moon rise, thoughtful eyes
Staring back at me from the window beside
No fright or hindsight
Leaving behind that empty feeling inside

Start a new chapter
Find what I'm after
It's changing every day
The change of a season
Is enough of a reason
To want to get away
Quiet and pensive
My thoughts apprehensive
The hours drift away
Leaving my homeland
Playing a lone hand
My life begins today

Harper Blynn - "In Another Life"

In another life we are inspired
In another life we are complete
Every night we sing by fires
And every morning tell each other of our dreams

In another life you never stray
In another life I never leave
In another life we all get paid
Would it be enough for you to believe?

In another life we go unnoticed
Running naked through the streets
In another life you’ll catching roses
From all the people that keep falling at your feet

In another life we are eternal
Wear no shoes upon our feet
In another life you’re just a little girl
Who never has to know what she believes

In another life
In another life
In another life we are mother's reveries

In another life
In another life
In another life the only words are you and me

But we’re never across the table
Static voices in an empty room
Sad sad silence over a cable
Honey, I’ll be coming home soon
We’re at the edge of something so high
If we jump together do you think we could fly?
But who are we the ones to tell
Whether this is heaven or hell?

Ooooh In another life
In another life
In another life we are mother's reveries

In another life we are eternal
In another life we are complete
In another life the only words are you and me

Here's the song I played over and over again as I was in the process of quitting my soul-sucking job:

Freedom '90
by George Michael

I won't let you down
I will not give you up
Gotta have some faith in the sound
It's the one good thing that I've got
I won't let you down
So please don't give me up
Because I would really, really love to stick around

Heaven knows I was just a young boy
Didn't know what I wanted to be
I was every little hungry schoolgirl's pride and joy
And I guess it was enough for me
To win the race?
A prettier face!
Brand new clothes and a big fat place
On your rock and roll TV
But today the way I play the game is not the same (no way)
Think I'm gonna get me some happy

I think there's something you should know
I think it's time I told you so
There's something deep inside of me
There's someone else I've got to be
Take back your picture in a frame
Take back your singing in the rain
I just hope you understand
Sometimes the clothes do not make the man

All we have to do now
Is take these lies and make them true somehow
All we have to see
Is that I don't belong to you
And you don't belong to me

Freedom
You've gotta give for what you take
Freedom
You've gotta give for what you take

Heaven knows we sure had some fun boy
What a kick just a buddy and me
We had every big shot good-time band on the run boy
We were living in a fantasy
We won the race
Got out of the place I went back home got a brand new face
For the boys on MTV
But today the way I play the game has got to change (oh yeah)
Now I'm gonna get myself happy

I think there's something you should know
I think it's time I stopped the show
There's something deep inside of me
There's someone I forgot to be
Take back your picture in a frame
Don't think that I'll be back again
I just hope you understand
Sometimes the clothes do not make the man

All we have to do now
Is take these lies and make them true somehow
All we have to see
Is that I don't belong to you
And you don't belong to me

Freedom
You've gotta give for what you take
Freedom
You've gotta give for what you take

Well it looks like the road to heaven
But it feels like the road to hell
When I knew which side my bread was buttered
I took the knife as well
Posing for another picture
Everybody's got to sell
But when you shake your ass
They notice fast
And some mistakes were built to last

That's what you get
I say that's what you get
That's what you get for changing your mind
And after all this time
I just hope you understand
Sometimes the clothes
Do not make the man

I'll hold on to my freedom
May not be what you want from me
Just the way it's got to be
Lose the face now I've got to live

Great topic.

I'm not retired yet, but I have my musical anthem picked out:
"Feeling Good"

Birds flying high
You know how I feel
Sun in the sky
You know how I feel
Breeze driftin' on by
You know how I feel
It's a new dawn
It's a new day
It's a new life
For me
And I'm feeling good
I'm feeling good

Fish in the sea
You know how I feel
River running free
You know how I feel
Blossom on a tree
You know how I feel
It's a new dawn
It's a new day
It's a new life
For me
And I'm feeling good

Dragonfly out in the sun you know what I mean, don't you know
Butterflies all havin' fun you know what I mean
Sleep in peace when day is done
That's what I mean
And this old world is a new world
And a bold world
For me

For me

Stars when you shine
You know how I feel
Scent of the pine
You know how I feel
Oh freedom is mine
And I know how I feel
It's a new dawn
It's a new day
It's a new life

It's a new dawn
It's a new day
It's a new life

It's a new dawn
It's a new day
It's a new life
It's a new life
For me

And I'm feeling good

I'm feeling good
I feel so good
I feel so good

Parts of this one, especially the refrain, do it for me...

"My Give A Damn's Busted"

Well you filled up my head with so many lies
You've twisted my heart 'til something snapped inside
I'd like to give it one more try
But, my give a damn's busted

You can crawl back home, say you were wrong
Stand out in the yard and cry all night long
Go ahead and water the lawn
My give a damn's busted

[Chorus:]
I really wanna care
I wanna feel something
Let me dig a little deeper
No, sorry, nothing

You can say you've got issues
You can say you're a victim
It's all your parents' fault, I mean after all you didn't pick em
Maybe somebody else has got time to listen
My give a damn's busted

Well your therapist says it was all a mistake
A product of the Prozac and your codependent ways
So who's your enabler these days
My give a damn's busted

[Chorus:]
I really wanna care
I wanna feel something
Let me dig a little deeper
No, still nothing

It's a desperate situation
No tellin what you'll do
If I don't forgive you, you say your life is through
Come on give me something I can use
My give a damn's busted

[Chorus:]
Well, I really wanna care
I wanna feel something
Let me dig a little deeper
No, man, sorry
Just nothing, no

You've really done it this time
My give a damn's busted

My post-FIRE work regime comes from The Wizard of Oz song called the Merry Old Land of Oz:

We get up at twelve and start to work at one
Take an hour for lunch and then at two we're done
Jolly good fun

When I retired 6 months ago, my son made mix CD for my retirement party.  The songs covered a wide range of emotions from joy, relief, gratitude, and even a little regret.  Here is the list
Take it Easy - Eagles
Good Riddance - Green Day
Take this Job and Shove it - Paycheck
Kind and Generous (Thank You) 10,000 Maniacs
I Don't want to Work - Todd Rungren
It's 5 o'clock somewhere-Jimmy Buffet
Let the Good Times Roll
I'm Already Gone
Don't Look Back
These are the Days
I'm Free

In the process of compiling the list, he googled something like "songs for retirement party" and it turns out there are several lists out there.

It doesn't fit entirely, as the song is about a murder committed during a home invasion. But the often repeated refrain works for me “Go on take the money and run."

Take The Money And Run - The Steve Miller Band

This is a story about Billy Joe and Bobbie Sue
Two young lovers with nothin' better to do
Than sit around the house, get high, and watch the tube
And here is what happened when they decided to cut loose
They headed down to, ooh, old El Paso
That's where they ran into a great big hassle
Billy Joe shot a man while robbing his castle
Bobbie Sue took the money and run

Go on take the money and run
Go on take the money and run
Go on take the money and run
Go on take the money and run

Billy Mack is a detective down in Texas
You know he knows just exactly what the facts is
He ain't gonna let those two escape justice
He makes his livin' off of the people's taxes

Bobbie Sue, whoa, whoa, she slipped away
Billy Joe caught up to her the very next day

They got the money, hey
You know they got away
They headed down south and they're still running today
Singin' go on take the money and run

Go on take the money and run
Go on take the money and run
Go on take the money and run
Go on take the money and run
Go on take the money and run
Go on take the money and run
Go on take the money and run

Loser Like Me - Glee Cast

Yeah, you may think that I'm a zero
But, hey, everyone you wanna be
Probably started off like me

You may say that I'm a freak show
(I don't care)
But, hey, give it just a little time
I bet you're gonna change your mind

All of the dirt you've been throwin' my way
It ain't so hard to take, that's right
'Cause I know one day you'll be screamin' my name
And I'll just look away, that's right

Just go ahead and hate on me and run your mouth
So everyone can hear
Hit me with the worst you got and knock me down
Baby, I don't care

Keep it up, and soon enough you'll figure out
You wanna be, you wanna be
A loser like me
A loser like me

Push me up against the locker
And, hey, all I do is shake it off
I'll get you back when I'm your boss

I'm not thinkin' 'bout you haters
'Cause, hey, I could be a superstar
I'll see you when you wash my car

All of the dirt you've been throwin' my way
It ain't so hard to take, that's right
'Cause I know one day you'll be screamin' my name
And I'll just look away, that's right

Just go ahead and hate on me and run your mouth
So everyone can hear
Hit me with the worst you got and knock me down
Baby, I don't care

Keep it up, and soon enough you'll figure out
You wanna be, you wanna be
A loser like me
A loser like me
A loser like me

Hey, you over there
Keep the L up, up in the air
Hey, you over there
Keep the L up, 'cause I don't care

You can throw your sticks and you can throw your stones
Like a rocket, just watch me go
Yeah, L-O-S-E-R
I can only be who I are

Just go ahead and hate on me and run your mouth
So everyone can hear
Hit me with the worst you got and knock me down
Baby, I don't care

Keep it up, and soon enough you'll figure out
You wanna be, you wanna be
A loser like

Go ahead and hate on me and run your mouth
So everyone can hear
Hit me with the worst you got and knock me down
Baby, I don't care

Keep it up, and soon enough you'll figure out
You wanna be, you wanna be
A loser like me
A loser like me
A loser like me
A loser like me
A loser like me!

So what I want to know is which of you already FIREd individuals is going to make a compilation of these (or at least links) that will play them one after the other for those of us on our last day?  Maybe we need a second list for those on their first day of FIRE?

Beck's bizarre track 'Soul Suckin' Jerk' is a great chorus to swim through your head as you finish your last day if you have any level of 'had enough of this crap' in you.

Ain't gonna work... for no soul suckin' jerk

I enthusiastically applaud the choice of "Watching the Wheels" by John Lennon (upthread).

About fifteen years ago, while stuck in a horrible job/situation that I very much wanted to change I had a vivid dream one night in which this song came to me -- note by note, word by word.  It was extraordinary, really, because although I had heard the song a few times I'd never played a recording of it over and over.

A few months later, at the very moment I started up my car to leave the parking lot of that awful workplace, "Watching the Wheels" came on the radio.  It's a perfect Mustachian anthem.

Zac Brown Band - Homegrown

I got a piece of land, out in the countryside
Lay back and smell the sun
Warm up the Georgia pine
Feels so good to be taking it easy
Why would I ever leave?
‘Cause I know

I got some good friends that live down the street
Got a good looking woman with her arms ‘round me
Here in a small town where it feels like home
I got everything I need and nothing that I don’t
Homegrown, Homegrown

We got a fire going down by the riverside
Sip whiskey out the bottle
Livin' like we’ll never die
Come on and stay a while if you don’t believe me
Why would I ever leave?
‘Cause I know

I got some good friends that live down the street
Got a good looking woman with her arms ‘round me
Here in a small town where it feels like home
I got everything I need and nothing that I don’t
Homegrown, Homegrown

I got some good friends that live down the street
Got a good looking woman with her arms 'round me
Here in a small town where it feels like home
I got everything I need
Homegrown
And nothing that I don't
Homegrown
Everything I need
Homegrown
And nothing that I don't
Homegrown

It's the weight that you carry from the things you think you want
It's the weight that you carry from the things you think you want
Weight you carry
It's the weight that you carry from the things you think you want
It's the weight that you carry from the things you think you want

I got everything I need, nothing that I don't
Homegrown
Everything I need, nothing that I don't
Homegrown
Everything I need, nothing that I don't
Homegrown
Oh, everything I need and nothing that I don't
Homegrown

A post from the peanut gallery.

Very far from fire. My pre-fire anthem:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=EvuL5jyCHOw

"Fly Away"

I wish that I could fly
Into the sky
So very high
Just like a dragonfly

I'd fly above the trees
Over the seas in all degrees
To anywhere I please

Oh I want to get away
I want to fly away
Yeah yeah yeah

Oh I want to get away
I want to fly away
Yeah yeah yeah

Let's go and see the stars
The milky way or even Mars
Where it could just be ours

Let's fade into the sun
Let your spirit fly
Where we are one
Just for a little fun
Oh oh oh yeah !

I want to get away
I want to fly away
Yeah yeah yeah

I want to get away
I want to fly away
Yeah yeah yeah

I got to get away
Feel I got to get away
Oh oh oh yeah

I want to get away
I want to fly away
Yeah with you yeah yeah
Oh Yeah !

I want to get away
I want to fly away
Yeah with you yeah yeah
I got to get away

I want to get away [X4]
Yeah
I want to get away
I want to fly away
Yeah with you yeah yeah
I got to get away

I want to get away [X4]
Yeah

I want to get away
I want to fly away
Yeah with you
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

Not FIRE'd yet, so maybe that why this song goes through my head from time to time:

Ants Marching - Dave Matthews Band (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXPOHCsgWFw)

He wakes up in the morning
Does his teeth bite to eat and he's rolling
Never changes a thing
The week ends the week begins
She thinks, we look at each other
Wondering what the other is thinking
But we never say a thing
These crimes between us grow deeper

Goes to visit his mommy
She feeds him well his concerns
He forgets them
And remembers being small
Playing under the table and dreaming

Take these chances
Place them in a box until a quieter time
Lights down, you up and die

Driving in on this highway
All these cars and upon the sidewalk
People in every direction
No words exchanged
No time to exchange

And all the little ants are marching
Red and black antennas waving
They all do it the same
They all do it the same way

Candyman tempting the thoughts of a
Sweet tooth tortured by the weight loss
Program cutting the corners
Loose end, loose end, cut, cut
On the fence, could not to offend
Cut, cut, cut, cut

Take these chances
Place them in a box until a quieter time
Lights down, you up and die

Lights down, you up and die

Lenny Kravitz "Fly Away" song was my pre-FIRE inspiration song too. It use to be in a Nissan X-Terra SUV commercial at the time and everyone in the commercial was doing cool fun things like mountain biking and kayaking and rock climbing because they had an X-Terra. I figured if I ditched the idea of buying an expensive X-Terra SUV so that, you know, I could do that stuff, then I could probably retire about 5 or more years sooner then planned and actually do those kinds of things with all that free time and extra money nsaved instead of just continuing to work to make monthly loan payments on the X-Terra which would mostly sit in the garage. Funny that the commercial had the total opposite effect on me then intended.
... but that ad showed the X-Terra came with an integrated first aid kit that was lovingly circled in red by the advertiser to highlight just how important that feature should be in your life. How could you resist that? ;-)

Great thread!  Not sure yet, but this one is in the running -- Jakob Dylan's "Something Good This Way Comes":

Lyrics

Got my window open wide
Got my window open wide
Got a good woman by my side
Got a good woman by my side

Now this kind of day
Has no night
Yeah
This kind of day
Has no night
Ain't got much on my mind
Ain't got much on my mind

'Cause I know
Something good this way comes

Now watching the streets
Filling up
Watching the streets filling up
In the shade of the summer sun
In the shade of the summer sun

Got sweet apple pie on the stove
Got sweet apple pie on the stove
The birds they're all flyin' low
The birds they're all flyin' low

'Cause I know
Something good this way comes

The trouble, doll
Is not moving mountains, but
Digging the ground that you're on
If it's true
That good fortune gives no chase
We got just what it takes

Collar up on my coat
Collar up on my coat
Trucks are pullin'
In for the show
Trucks are pullin'
In for the show

Grasshopper jump in the road
Grasshopper jump in the road
Kids they're all running home
The kids
They're all running home

'Cause they know
Something good this way comes
Yeah
Something good this way comes

The trouble, doll
Is not moving mountains, but
Digging the ground
That you're on
If it's true
That good fortune
Gives no chase
We got just what it takes
Got my window open wide
Got my window open wide
Got a good woman by my side
Got a good woman by my side

Yeah
Something good this way comes
Yeah
Something good this way comes

"Takin' Care Of Business"

You get up every morning
From your 'larm clock's warning
Take the 8:15 into the city
There's a whistle up above
And people pushin', people shovin'
And the girls who try to look pretty
And if your train's on time
You can get to work by nine
And start your slaving job to get your pay
If you ever get annoyed
Look at me I'm self-employed
I love to work at nothing all day
And I'll be

Taking care of business (every day)
Taking care of business (every way)
I've been taking care of business (it's all mine)
Taking care of business and working overtime
Work out

If it were easy as fishin'
You could be a musician
If you could make sounds loud or mellow
Get a second-hand guitar
Chances are you'll go far
If you get in with the right bunch of fellows
People see you having fun
Just a-lying in the sun
Tell them that you like it this way
It's the work that we avoid
And we're all self-employed
We love to work at nothing all day
And we be

Taking care of business (every day)
Taking care of business (every way)
We be been taking care of business (it's all mine)
Taking care of business and working overtime

Mercy
Whooooo
All right

I'm Free - The Who
http://youtu.be/uRD_gIoVOmY

I'M FREE- I'm free,
And freedom tastes of reality,
I'm free-I'm free,
AN' I'm waiting for you to follow me.

If I told you what it takes
to reach the highest high,
You'd laugh and say 'nothing's that simple'
But you've been told many times before
Messiahs pointed to the door
And no one had the guts to leave the temple!

I'm free-I'm free
And freedom tastes of reality
I'm free-I'm free
And I'm waiting for you to follow me.

How can we follow?
How can we follow?

In my farewell email I included a link to this, and a second link to  Parliament compilation ('cause it's not a party unless there is some funk!)
Thanks Pigeon for pointing out this anthem - it was very timely for me!

Watching the Wheels - John Lennon
(I didn't post the lyrics upthread)

Neil Young - Comes a Time will be blaring on 4.19.18. I think it's a song about transition in life. Chorus is perfect; "This old world keeps spinning round, it's a wonder tall trees aint laying down, there comes a time"

Love this tread!  Here's my fav:  "I quit my job today" by Old Man Leudecke

Oh bright minds of poverty
Hold on to your heart won liberties
And discard your store bought realities

Don’t let them take, the joy that you make
On your own

Work when you need to maybe
Don’t let ‘em bleed you baby
They do nothing more than feed you lady

Don’t let them take, the joy that you make
On your own

Don’t fuss, don’t fight it no
Take that wrong and right it ho
Can always live on rice and potatoes
Take your heart’s candle and relight it

I quit my Job,
I quit my Job!
I quit my Job
I’m free today

Should be proud of where I am
All my friends work their dreams with their hands
And truly this is the promised land

Don’t kill yourself about making it
Just be takin it easy but be takin it
There’s enough out there who are fakin it

Don’t let them take, the joy that you make
On your own

I quit my Job,
I quit my Job!
I quit my Job
I’m free today

Let it Go by Idina Menzel

Let it go, let it go
Cant hold it back anymore
Let it go, let it go
Turn my back and slam the door
The snow blows white on the mountain tonight
Not a footprint to be seen
A kingdom of isolation and it looks like Im the queen
The wind is howling like the swirling storm inside
Couldnt keep it in
Heaven knows I try
Dont let them in, dont let them see
Be the good girl you always had to be
Conceal, dont feel, dont let them know
Well now they know
Let it go, let it go
Cant hold you back anymore
Let it go, let it go
Turn my back and slam the door
And here I stand
And here Ill stay
Let it go, let it go
The cold never bothered me anyway
Its funny how some distance makes everything seem small
And the fears that once controlled me cant get to me at all
Up here in the cold thin air I finally can breathe
I know left a life behind but Im too relieved to grieve
Let it go, let it go
Cant hold you back anymore
Let it go, let it go
Turn my back and slam the door
And here I stand
And here Ill stay
Let it go, let it go
The cold never bothered me anyway
Standing frozen in the life Ive chosen
You wont find me, the past is all behind me
Buried in the snow
Let it go, let it go
Cant hold you back anymore
Let it go, let it go
Turn my back and slam the door
And here I stand
And here Ill stay
Let it go, let it go
The cold never bothered me anyway
Let it go
Here I stand
Let it go, let it go
Let it go

/s but somewhat appropriate.

Surprisingly, if you were to forget that 'Let Ut Go' came from a Disney movie, it makes for a pretty good song for this.

For Educators,

"School's Out"

Well we got no choice
All the girls and boys
Makin all that noise
'Cause they found new toys
Well we can't salute ya
Can't find a flag
If that don't suit ya
That's a drag

School's out for summer
School's out forever
School's been blown to pieces

No more pencils
No more books
No more teacher's dirty looks

Well we got no class
And we got no principles
And we got no innocence
We can't even think of a word that rhymes

School's out for summer
School's out forever
School's been blown to pieces

No more pencils
No more books
No more teacher's dirty looks

Out for summer
Out till fall
We might not go back at all

School's out forever
School's out for summer
School's out with fever
School's out completely

This song is more of a pre-fire anthem for me. :)

"Nobody Likes A Cynic"

'Cause trash like you will never have the means with which to live
In any modicum of luxury or vague derivative
Of comfort, don't stray beyond your class.
You'll never crack this ceiling made of glass.

Oh, just live to work and then expire.
Keep your mouth shut, you might retire
To something more than debts stretched far beyond your means.
Pledge allegiance to the corporate machines.

Don't you dare step out of line,
Everything will be just fine
But you'd better mind your place.

Just learn to be a good consumer.
You're now a number,
You've no longer got a face.

Let my anger be my declaration,
My dissent, my participation.

Resistance isn't any use.
Just consume, obey and reproduce
The next working class who'll shoulder your burden of despair,
Your empty cries for a living wage; our system doesn't care.

(We don't care) That our system won't provide for public health.
(We don't care) That you're left out in the cold all by yourself.
We don't care.

"Something More" By Sugarland

Monday, hard to wake up
Fill my coffee cup, I'm out the door
Yeah, the freeway's standing still today
It's gonna make me late, and thats for sure
I'm running out of gas and out of time
Never gonna make it there by nine

[Chorus:]
There's gotta be something more
Gotta be more than this
I need a little less hard time
I need a little more bliss
I'm gonna take my chances
Taking a chance I might
Find what I'm looking for
There's gotta be something more

Five years and there's no doubt
That I'm burnt out, I've had enough
So now boss man, here's my two weeks
I'll make it short and sweet, so listen up
I could work my life away, but why?
I got things to do before I die

[Repeat Chorus]

Some believe in destiny, and some believe in fate
I believe that happiness is something we create
You best believe that I'm not gonna wait
'Cause there's gotta be something more

I get home 7:30 the house is dirty, but it can wait
Yeah, 'cause right now I need some downtime
To drink some red wine and celebrate
Armageddon could be knocking at my door
But I ain't gonna answer that's for sure.
There's gotta be something!

[Repeat Chorus]

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
