Title: OLY? FIRE Timing
Post by: Upstate NYer on May 05, 2015, 03:02:50 PM
Anyone out there that is already FIRE that wishes they had pulled the plug sooner?

On the flip side, is there anyone that wishes they had waited at least OMY?

One of my most motivating quotes pre-FIRE was this:

"Retiring too early is a mistake you can recover from. Too late and there is no recovery."

I retired as soon as I could, but wish I had been able to retire sooner.

Now that I have a firmer grasp on our spending levels and withdrawal rates I now realize that I probably could have retired several years earlier. Yet my FIRE'd life is now so wonderful that I can't really bring myself to focus on those "lost years...and having saved more than we need isn't the worst thing for a risk averse fellow like me. :)

Any regrets I have are increasingly fleeting.

Thanks Diane C, I like that quote. Takes a bit of fear out of making the leap.

Jon_Snow, it still looks like you retired at a pretty young age. :)

That's a great quote!

I'm retiring as soon as I could, and probably sooner!  ;)

I did pull the plug "sooner".  I originally planned to stay through April Bonus but left in early October instead.  There was just no joy left in my role and the markets delivered an unexpected gift.  Hindsight 20/20, wish I had done it sooner even if it meant part time or occasional contract work to fill in gaps.

Thanks FV. Sounds like most people wish they had pulled the plug sooner, not later. Mulling over bumping things up to October of this year. I think the market is more likely to correct than deliver an unexpected gift at this point...but I think I can weather it and still pull the plug this year...

Work for me is one monotonous day after another at this point...

Thanks Spartana. Seems like the consensus is sooner rather than later. With that in mind, I'm pulling the plug this year, rather than next. :)

On balance I wish I had RE'd sooner. The last 19 months I took a job with an 80 mile one way commute and looking back its clear I was already FI.

Having said that, the really was one of those mountaintop experiences.. I.e the opportunity to lead a project that had never been done before.

When it was done I stuck around for a few more months, then I quit.

My numbers are all in my journal if your interested... Link below
