Oh Shit! I think I just un-retired.
« on: August 16, 2017, 06:43:26 PM »
I sub at the local HighSchool as a side hustle. I do it because I like mentoring kids and it qualifies me to coach football.  I only work one or two days a week and it gives me a little extra beer money (I'm a beer snob).  I've been filling in for the newly hired JROTC instructor who failed to qualify with the Army, so was let go.  Apparently, it will take months to hire a new instructor, so I was asked to take on the job full time until a replacement can be found.  I agreed since, again, I love mentoring kids and as a retired Marine NCO, this is right up my alley.  So...looks like I am the interim JROTC instructor for the remainder of the term, at least.  40 hours per week for the foreseeable future.  Does this disqualify me as ER? Should I stop posting in the Post-FIRE forum? I guess I could always say that I invest 90% of my income since it will all be going into my ROTH.  Minus beer money, of course.  😉🇺🇸

Being ER is my dream. But my plan is to work when I feel like it. Ant it seems this is a fun thing to do. Go for it!

I've got an old Army friend that retired as a SGM a few years ago.

He also does the substitute teaching thing and loves it.  Since it's not an everyday thing, he can still has plenty of time for important retirement activities (like fishing), but it gets him out of the house, plus he also likes helping kids.

Enjoy!

I think you've stumbled upon that which most of us strive for, work that doesn't feel like work or make us feel like a wage slave. The % of folks who achieve that HAS to be low (maybe less than 1%?) I say YOU are now in the 1% club!

Beer snob here as well, what are you enjoying these days?

I think the JROTC instructor has the opportunity to show high school kids the value of discipline and structured work.  I say "the opportunity".. it's certainly not universally accomplished.  :-)

I spent some time enlisted, then got a commissioning scholarship and went into ROTC in college, so I've seen both sides of that divide.  Bring those kids some Marine hard work and attitude!

Badass
Sounds to me like you are ER, and found a side hobby/hustle, for which you earn full-time salary.
You still are FI, nothing has changed, now you're just doing it for giggles. Yes??
enjoy it!

INFROMSEA and ERIC, I like IPA and when drinking light, German wheat.  Goose IPA is my go to.  Ain't ER great?

You can quaff a beer over the weekend and enter yourself as a Smug SWAMI if you like in the poll:

By the way, your new job officially makes you one of the Mustachians Most Like A Robert Heinlein Character in my book.  Makes me think of the teacher/voter/vet who was teaching civics in the book Starship Troopers.

Isn't FIRE and ER all about having the freedom to do what the hell you want to do?  Even if that is doing paid work?  Sounds to me like all you're doing is exercising your freedom to choose!  Have fun!

Agreed.  In the MMM podcast with Tim Ferris, he stated that many people earn money after RE, not because they need it, but because they enjoy the activity.  Good job!

I think the difference is simply working for fun is not work , working because you have to sucks! Enjoy your retirement while making money doing a hobby you enjoy while impacting the life of others in a positive way!

Yep. You are no longer retired.

By choice (not necessity--e.g. you didn't NEED to go back to work).

That's the best, and the whole point of FI, doing what you want to do, which may include not being retired.

Enjoy the work, and if you stop it for something else, enjoy that. Life is a great adventure. :)
I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.
If you want to know more about me, this Business Insider profile tells the story pretty well.

Where in Alabama are you?  I always wanted to get a group of Alabama mustacheans together for pints and frugal/investing tips.

I used to live in H'ville.  I think there are at least a couple others of us living there.  PM me if you might be interested in a meet up.  I was thinking on starting a frugal lifestyle/FIRE group on Meetup.
