Title: Need Ideas for Flexible Employment While Semi Retired
Post by: Fishfindr on August 22, 2016, 03:24:04 PM
I don't have enough to fully retire, but have a good chunk of FU money and no debt so I'm looking to leave the office job. I'm realizing at 48 years of age, that I don't want to continue what I'm doing for the next 20 years. I really miss working outdoors (firefighter/light construction/farm work), but I'm not 20 something anymore and have to go a little bit easier on the body. The biggest challenge for me is that there's probably a perfect fit, but don't have the reach to know about the opportunities. I'm reaching out to this community hoping that there are some early retirees who have found something that might work for me as well.

Here are a few of the attributes of the perfect fit job for me:

A little flexibility in work schedule

Work that involves being outdoors with some degree of physical labor to keep fit

A job where you are your own boss (kind of), but not necessarily your own business - if that makes any sense

I'm great at meeting commitments -being somewhere on time, doing what I've promised no matter what it takes to complete the job

Health insurance option, but could use wife's if not available

I really like driving and a change of scenery. Not looking for something that takes me to the same place every day

Bring home pay in the mid 30's would be nice

Something that doesn't require me to go back to school for too long. I don't mind a few months of training/certification needed

I'm wondering about things like medical related courier, hotshot truck driving, home inspection, pest control, etc.

I'd appreciate any other interesting ideas!

Thanks!

I can't find it right now -- but there is a GREAT discussion group here on all the interesting ways people make money on the side -- many are very unusual and creative.  I believe the key word of the discussion topic is "side gig".  As for me, I make royalties on ebooks on Amazon -- not a lot but (about $200 a month), but enough to offset part of my insane health insurance bill.

Here it is.  I just found the link...almost 500 responses to the question of side gigs. http://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/ask-a-mustachian/who-has-a-side-gigjob-that-brings-in-extra-cash-share-with-us!/

I know several people that work part time spring & fall gigs for farmers and fertilizer outfits during their busy seasons, planting & harvest.
I've thought about buying a piece of equipment such as a backhoe, stump grinder, etc. and hiring out for small, short duration projects.

Delivering the US mail seems to meet most of your criteria.  Much of that is done now by workers in small businesses that contract to deliver the mail.  Walk/drive a lot, outside a lot, work your muscles loading the truck.

A friend of mine with truck drivin' skills recently earned $18/hour doing that.  I think ordinary delivery pays less, but you could find out for locations near you.

I used to work in the Texas oilfields, very well paying, but very stressful the exact job I was working. Anyways one of the guys I worked for quit after he'd had enough, and driving for a chemical supply company.

A lot of the producing oil wells were self contained, and required treatment or something or other, so he would basically check on various wells, load chemicals as needed, and be off. No super strict schedule, lots of driving, bit of out door work. Very independent. Sounded decent.
