Cookie78:
Thanks for the link. This is very high on my to-do-post-FIRE list. :)

I'm hoping to find some snowbirds who will let me live in their house for free all winter. My expenses would be even lower.

The Voluntary Life podcast had a recent episode on this topic: http://www.thevoluntarylife.com/2015/05/203-early-retirement-and-housesitting.html

I had never thought of it as an option for full-time living, but it is quite interesting. Not sure I would want to do it full-time but could be nice as a place to stay while traveling.

My cousin does something similar.  I haven't asked her about it directly, but through the family grapevine it sounds like some sort of home share system.  She leaves soon for a month in Singapore(?) where she'll be house sitting and caring for their cat.  Back home, another family will be occupying her house to see the sights in the US.  It's not a direct swap, but it works well.  She has done this 3 or 4 times/year since she retired.
