Finally trying FIRE. Zero urge to make money.
« on: April 29, 2024, 01:07:27 PM »
38 years old. Pulled the plug about 5 weeks ago. I had nothing left to work for. Gov is paying for multiple wars... student loan forgiveness... ACA paying for a population that is 50% obese... No boarder, hundreds of thousands of people flooding in every year. But hey, I get a ticket for not wearing a seatbelt lol. No ambition to contribute to system anymore.

I decided to try work exchange across the country (USA). I'm currently on an organic goat farm/250 acre preserve. I get my own tiny home and unlimited healthy food. Zero stress. Thinking of doing this for a few years across the U.S and world. If I find a perfect spot that speaks to me. I'll settle down there. So far so good, really enjoy working with animals and not having to drive anywhere. Anyone else have a good story of something untraditional that they did/try? Always looking for more ideas and inspiration.

Current expense is $16k. Probably end up being 20k if I go crazy.[MOD NOTE: User banned for trolling. Topic locked]

Seems hypocritical to complain about people "flooding in here" then immediately jump to saying you want to go stay in another country if you "find a good spot".  What makes you different from them?

Otherwise it's cool to hear about super badass low spending even if i dont agree with your politics so keep on posting updates!

To be fair, they said 'across the country' not that they were leaving the country.

I'm working on flexing the fu money muscle now. I need to get on my boss's schedule today so I can give him notice.  And then? Hubs and I are moving into our 1984 Bluebird Wanderlodge and bumming actually the country for a while.  We're looking for the place that speaks to us, as well.  That's the simplified version, anyway.

Not gonna lie the organic goat farm sounds pretty awesome.

Where does one find such a thing?

Do I just do a Google search for organic goat farms near me?

Maybe it is with a WWOOF program?  If you google WWOOF a website with various internships should pop up.

People not wearing seatbelts are also covered by the ACA.  Just something to think about.

Good luck on your retirement.  I hope you find what you are looking for.

It was "across the U.S. and the world" which implies crossing a few borders. I'm not judging their plan, just the logic of complaining because others are doing the same

What makes me different from them? Are you serious?

For starters I would legally do it. I would also pay 100% of my own way. I have citizenship in Luxembourg which opens doors in EU. Thailand has retirement visas, etc.

I would love to do that with a loved one. Was thinking someday... One thing I've learned in the tiny home I'm living in is the chemical toilets (peat moss or cococut husks). I think that's a chemical toilet. Anyways. They are pain in the butt. I'd rather piss in a bottle and dump it once a day. And poop in a bucket with wood chips and a compostable bag.

Ha well I do wear my seatbelt. An example of how only certain laws are enforced. Breaking big laws is okay, breaking small laws is not okay

Wanted to add. It can be a good way to meet like minded people and community driven people (working on organic farms or doing volunteer/exchange work). If you are doing it from one of the websites you can give and receive reviews. If you have solid reviews you could use that card to do house sitting or whatever. If people see you are a good person they are more likely to let you in. Workaway.info has a lot of different options

Nearly 250,000 people were apprehended trying to cross at the southern border just in December 2023. The Department of Homeland Security estimates that they catch the majority of people crossing illegally in recent years. If I were to drive down the highway without a seatbelt do you think I'd be more likely than not to get caught by the police? I sure don't think so.

Been playing around with ProjectionLab. Got it dialed in. Effective tax rate will be around 6% unless doing roth conversions. If you haven't seen the software check it out. It's really useful and the owner is working on it full time now to make even better.

Compared to 7.5 million "encounters" (i.e. apprehensions). That's a ~20% chance of getting through without being caught. I defy you to find any city or state government in the country that has traffic cops numerous enough to even try to ticket 80% of seatbelt law violations.

I'm sooo confused on what you are rambling on about? You sit on here all day and say useless things that pertain to nothing? Is life that bad in Seattle?

Well got a full day of nature and no city/cars/noise pollution to enjoy. Have fun with your full-time presence of MMM forums.

It's an online forum..

Virtually everything in an online forum turns in to some sort of debate.

It is frustrating, but it's also sort of the nature of the beast. There may be hundreds of people who read your post, only the people who disagree or feel strongly enough to reply will reply to it.

I'm sooo confused on what you are rambling on about?

You made a completely false and nonsensical claim that there was less enforcement of illegal border crossing than seatbelt laws. I tried correcting you with official statistics, but you apparently have a hard time with reading comprehension. Please reconsider whether your opinions on the situation at the southern border are based on an accurate set of facts. Good day.

Your first paragraph almost sounds trollish.  NOT a good first impression for a post...lol.

As for the ACA, would you rather folks not be on it and go bankrupt?  The ACA is the best we have, and insures millions that would have been completely without health insurance if the previous predatory rules were still in place.

The ACA is also the gateway to FIRE for many who would definitely not have been able to retire early before the ACA was in place.

Have fun with your goats.

What are you doing for health insurance then? ACA? Medicaid? Something else?
