Healthcare account for expenses post Fire
« on: September 02, 2020, 07:42:22 AM »
Did any of you guys set up a seperate account pre-fire to use stricktly for healthcare needs.

im about to fire, sometime in the next 6 months and am timing it with getting laid off from megaoilcorp.... in doing that, i wont make it to be old enough to get retiree medical, but my severence should be about 150k after taxes and such... So thoughts of putting that in VTSAX for example and just using the interest made each year to pay for medical coverage for my spouse and I.

we are still playing aorund with numbers, but best i can see a silver ACA plan would cost us about 5oo per month.. So if that 150k in vtsax made us 4% that would likely take care of our aca payments.... This is my only concern about Fire

Thanks

Tex

Do you mean other than HSA? No. Money is fungible, I see no reason to keep a bunch of accounts dedicated to a specific purpose.

Yeah there's no need for a separate account. Health insurance is an expense just like any other. You can plan and save for it the same way as anything else.

No. Buckets are for children and undisciplined savers.

Yes, I have invested my HSA over the years, rather than use it like an FSA for immediate expenses.  Would I earmark some lump sum otherwise for health care?  No, it's just part of the budget.  Would you not choose emergency surgery because your healthcare account ran out?  Planning is one thing, but in the end it's all your pot of money.

Nope. Just lump everything together but made sure I will have enough to cover future "reasonable" health insurance and care costs. Even if that means having to give up the pool boy, the lawn boy, the cabana boy, the lavious vacations, the Ferraris,  and the monkey butler.
My monkeys don’t have a butler- I suddenly realize that is what is missing in my life! How much should I budget for one?
