Retire? no, I just don't want to work anymore.
My wife and I have been self employed for the last 15 years.
Two person business, she's type A, I'm not. She's up at 6am
starting prep for the day. We close at 6pm plus another 1/2 hr
getting ready for tomorrow. I work at least 45 hrs, up to 60 hrs.
She works more. We are open 363 days a year, 10 hrs a day.
I have told her I'm not working after the end of this year,
I'll need to find her an employee, she has said she will do it herself.
She has the will, but not the strength and endurance to do it all.
She has the ability to make both of us miserable.
The closer I get to the end of the year the harder I think this will be.
We have enough, but it just is not in her to stop.
It will be an interesting transition, I wish I wanted to continue to
be her plow horse, but I don't.
Wish us luck.

I really love my job and always have - pretty lucky that I got into this field - fair amount of time outside, interesting and challenging work that makes a difference.  And somehow I've always managed to work with great people (a few aholes on the margins) -- current job is the best I ever had and a have a high salary.

That said - it's still work right?  Even though there are times I can't believe they actually pay me to do this stuff - it takes time.  Get up each morning, go to work or travel, come home - and as you get older it's harder to muster the energy for weekend adventures.  Now if I worked only 3 days a week...........  which is the plan in two years when I'll be 62.

And eventually - yes, there are plenty of other things to do besides work -- as long as you have your financial ducks in line.

Hell yes I want to retire!

I love my organization and the work we do. I work with phenomenol people and we have amazing benefits and very good salary structure in a LCOL area.

But I want to travel the world and when doing so never need to check a bank balance before I pull out my debit card.

There is so much to see and experience I just can't fathom wanting to be chained to a job.

I plan to eventually "retire" into running my real estate businesses full time.  My current job is so flexible it is hard to consider leaving or finding other work, but things aren't always rosy.  I guess we'll see how things go over the next few years.  I should be FIRE-capable in the next 26 months at my desired level of income.
