Health care for 2 month only !!
« on: March 11, 2019, 04:20:40 PM »

  Hi,
I am sorry if this has been asked before , but I am at a loss at what to do here.

My husband and I will be relocating to Canada , we are dual citizens (usa/cdn) we currently live in ohio,
husband plans on quitting his job and we are moving to Canada.
There will be about 6-8 weeks that we will still be in ohio without his company health insurance, Cobra is a option but I believe its very expensive, does any one know of any plans for 6-8 weeks, we are both 54 ,non smokers, healthy weight, the only "pre existing " condition is my husband takes a low dose statin for cholesterol.

I have tried researching but I am feeling very overwhelmed , I read about short term insurance policy's, but they look like they dont cover anything, even if you are in a accident. I dont mind paying for a policy for a few weeks to have peace of mind. I am not certain about the cost of cobra from my husbands company, that may be the way to go ?????  ..........can I use HSA  funds to pay for cobra ??
thank you for any input on this , like I said we only need it for several weeks.

If you have low income in those two months go on Medicaid, Ohio expanded I think.

You mention COBRA -- are you aware that you can sign up for it retroactively such that you only sign up and pay if you need it in which case it covers your back to your termination date? We did that for a 1 month coverage lapse when my wife changed jobs. Filled out all the paperwork and left it with a trusted family member in case something happened to us that incapacitated us.

  hi,
I dont think medicare would apply since , we are not low income we just need insurance until we relocate to Canada which will be about 6 weeks after we sell our home, it may even be a shorter amount time since as soon as all loose ends are done we will move.

the plan is when the house is sold  my husband will hand in his 2 week notice at work, after that time he will immediately begin the process of rolling over his 401k to a IRA ( we were told its best to do this while we are still residents in USA)
apparently this takes  1-2 weeks, we plan to go directly to Fidelty  to fill out paper work so we are not waiting on mail.

I just need to  figure out health care for the time between all this and relocating .
Does anyone now the cost of cobra ??? Husband said he does not want ask HR at work since they will know his future plans, it would cause problems if they knew he plans on leaving.

thanks for your input.
