What's your ideal day when FIRED look like?
« on: August 17, 2015, 12:53:20 AM »
I have just written a post on my ideal day when FIRED but my site doesn' get much traffic so I just wanted to bring this to a place where I'd get answers. I'm really interested to hear what peoples days are like when FIREd. My own is a mixture of learning, work and family time.

Regular day

7am – Wake

This is an hour later than I rise now, but I am a huge believer in a morning routine and as I want to remain productive in FI, I will ensure this remains.

9am – Drop Miss GF off at school and hit the gym.

Most likely this will be Mrs GF and I walking or cycling to the school and then hitting the gym on the way home.

11am – Work, Continued Learning, Allotment

1pm – Lunch

2pm – Collect Miss GF from school

Hit the park or other child friendly activity

4.00pm – Start prepping dinner

6.00pm – Dinner and a glass of wine

7.00pm – Family Time and put Miss GF to bed.

9.00pm – Sexy time. May also happen at 9am.

9.03pm – Sleepy time.

Activity Days

Replace everything during the morning and early afternoon with one of the following activities: Hiking, surfing, canoeing, working on the allotment, cycling or come up with new hobby ideas. I’m keen to keep my hobby cost at a minimum so either they must be relatively low cost or covering themselves through an entrepreneurial venture.

Stretch Goal – Extended Travel

We’ve never really travelled extensively for long periods. A huge goal of ours is to see the world. While Miss GF is in school (I don’t think we’d be homeschoolers, but I’m open to researching this), our plan is to relocate and travel during the summer months. Firstly focusing on Europe and then planning to go much further afield. My own ultimate goal is to travel to New Zealand via Japan, enjoy the summer heat in Japan and then on to New Zealand for a months skiing. This all takes money and while our budget will stretch so far, it will restrict longer term travel. Once I hit our 100% goal, I will taper off my work which will take 12-24 months and bring in resources to replace my day to day work. We’ll still have profit in the business, mostly likely a similar amount, but without my need to be in the business daily.

I have 3 different "home bases" in FIRE. My days in each of these places are quite different from one another. But they are all awesome in their own way...I find it pretty much impossible to have a bad day in FIRE. :)

For me, I am happiest when I have actually achieved something during the day - no matter how small. So I do have a list of chores and projects which I like to spend a little time on every day. I also like a bit of exercise every day - 30 minutes in my gym or and hour or two playing tennis. Lastly, I love my nap between 13H00 and 14H00 - winter sunbeam lands on my bed, chuck in my two furry dogs - heaven.

Bahahahhaha that was hilarious!!

On topic, I think its interesting that you guys have such scheduled days post FIRE.  When I FIRE I do not plan on having much of a schedule and just doing whatever takes my fancy or needs to be done at the time.  I could definitely see myself falling into some kind of routine though, but I think it will be extremely open ended.  For example I could see wake up/breakfast window being 6-10am, morning time would be spent on a hobby or chores, 11-1 is the lunch window, afternoon is more time for hobby, chores, or social stuff, 5-8 is the dinner window, and evening would likely be social activities, relax time, or more hobbies.  My FIRE contract would state that I have the right to turn any of those blocks into sexy time.

Interesting. I guess it's because to retire early you probably need certain traits, traits that cannot be just turned off. Goal driven, task orientated and being slightly regimented - and of course, good looking, super intelligent ect, ect. :)

On the days that I see clients then I have a set time. Otherwise I get up & read paper, drink coffee. Sometime during the day I walk the dog. Some days I do some cleaning, some on the internet, etc. Once a week we go to the bargain movie for $5.00 followed by a $5 buffet which is really good.  It just so happens that these occur only 1 day a week & on the same day which is perfect.  On Saturday we usually do an outside activity in the afternoon. One day a week we usually have company for dinner & 1 night a week I get together with a good friend. I have 3 friends that can't drive due to illness so take them on errands, to doc appts, etc. My hubby helps with this too.

First at least 3-6 months I won't have any plan at all.  It'll be wake up when I wake up and then do as little shit as possible.  3-6 months should be plenty to decompress and then I can think about actual productivity and health goals with my days.

GF generally stands for girlfriend so when I got to take GF to school, I was thinking how old is his girlfriend????  I blew that off thinking she was probably a teacher.  Then I got to hit the park and child friendly activities and started to worry that Jarod from Subway was on the forum.

I have NO schedule and am in heaven... get up when I want, go to bed when I want, eat when I want, take walks when I want.  A bad day is having an appointment on my calendar.  I spend most time reading, listening to podcasts, watching classic films and studying topics I'm interested in.

This is my plan. Strictly no schedule during decompression time. I imagine after that I'll develop schedules, but they'll change periodically depending on where I am.

I don't think I'll have a single ideal day because I need variety too much. My ideal will be constantly changing depending on how I feel and where I am and what I've been up to lately and the time of year. I can picture multiple and vastly different 'ideal days' in my future.

I normally get up around 7 am and workout (bike ride of gym).  Then I work on my blogs for a couple of hours and save the afternoons for something really fun (golf, boating, swimming, movies, etc.).
