Post FIRE - resume gaps?
« on: February 25, 2016, 03:51:22 PM »
I've been FIRE for 6 months now. I found a part time job I want to apply for. I don't think of it as a side gig because I don't need the money necessarily, and it's actually one I'd do for free. It just happens to be paid. It's more of something fun to do.

They want me to submit a resume. How should I account for the last 6 months? Most people can't just do what they want for 6 months, without active income nor collecting unemployment. That 6 month gap will be very noticeable if they actually pay attention to the dates of my last job.

Put down a 'sabbatical' with dates like you would any other job.

If you did anything interesting, or had any personal projects you want to share - you might want to put them there.  If it's private and you don't like sharing, wait until they ask in the interview.

Just stick to the truth. You retired early, but this job sounds so interesting, you're going for it. Be honest. I'm sure they'll find that refreshing. It will also make you memorable, which is most helpful. For your last entry on your resume, list the start date and the retirement (not end) date. Easy-peasy.
When you get to the interview, you can have some fun with this. "The fact that I'm applying for this job post-retirement proves my motivaction is strong.  How do you know those other candidates aren't just applying because they need the money?"

I had a 3 year gap where I just took a sabbatical.  (I called it Pretirement.)  I just was honest about it.

"What were you doing for the last 3 years?"

"Driving a tractor.  Clearing land."

On the flip side, they may look at it as someone who could be harder to work with because they "don't need the money." Just a different potential thought.
