Nomadic Famlies
« on: February 17, 2018, 07:18:31 AM »
We are on the path to being a nomadic family. Right now our kids are 4 and 6, we plan to hit the road in about 5 years.  I'd love to connect with those of you on the same path or that are already there! We just made this decision (although we've been saving for early retirement for awhile) and it's hard to find a large community of people that have chosen this life with kids. I would love to hear what other people are doing!

We are nomads traveling full-time in a motorhome. It is a great life for people of all ages. Follow our adventures on our website. Link below.

I am part of a nomadic couple (3.5 years and counting since we had a fixed abode), that will have a nomadic newborn in a few months. The plan is to remain nomads once the baby comes along, but we have discussed every possible option. There's no way for us to know exactly what it'll be like (just as there's no way for OP to know what their 9 and 11 year old will be like in 5 years), so we're playing the future by ear and trying to plan for as many scenarios as we can.

I thought about doing this, but I am scratching my head about health insurance on the road. In my state, the only thing on the exchanges has only in-state providers as in-network. Everyone everywhere else is out-of-network. Obviously, that is a complete PITA if you plan on traveling around FT and have no idea where a medical emergency might strike because the cost differential is massive.

Check your insurance policy for out-of-network emergency care. Per healthcare.gov insurance plans are not allowed to require higher copays or coinsurance when you seek emergency care outside their network. They also cannot require you to obtain prior approval before getting ER services.

We have no personal experience (luckily) with out-of-network ER care but do know that it is covered on our policy.

I'd feel better if it explicitly stated that they will not charge you out-of-network rates for emergencies out-of-network, but it doesn't say that. :/
