How important are local friends in your FIRE life?
« on: April 24, 2016, 09:28:04 PM »
If you are FIREd, it is likely that your local friends are still working. How do you coordinate with the schedule of your friends? If you like slow travel, how do you re-connect with friends after you come back? or you just don't care about local friends anymore.

Some activities are better with local friends, e.g., playing cards, playing golf, hiking, partying, etc.

I still have kids at home so spend plenty of time with friends around that group at evening sporting events etc..

Alot of my other friends are in the trades and are independents so I can see them at a jobsite or when there so often taking time off.

Also my friend "pool" seems slowly changing over as I find more and more people that are at home during the day of all ages and also at the gym.

So adding all that Up I have plenty of time with friends so for those that are still busy in life , when they do have time if it works we get together and pick up where we left off.

Being open to friends of all ages is important and can be very rewarding!

I see friends on nights/weekends and the longest we go away is a month and we keep in touch by text, talk, email while gone.

If you're FIRED, you have a pretty open schedule. I literally do whatever I want. How much easier could it be to make plans?

Not to mention the fact that you don't want to be doing the chores when everyone else is. Going to Costco on a Saturday? Hell no!

My solution for this potential problem is to not have friends.

Not sure if this is sarcasm or not but similarly inclined.

It's (hopefully) funny but also true. I'm actually wondering if I will be more interested in spending time around people if I have a lot more time. I'm definitely somewhat of an introvert. But whenever I spend time around people, I always feel like I should be doing something "more productive". When "doing what I want" is the only goal, will that include friends? I look forward to finding out.

I work in health care and am around people ALL day. Talk talk talk talk. By the time I'm off work and weekends I'm ready for some 'me' time. I'm somewhat of an introvert outside work, but when I'm on vacation I'm an extrovert. I think so much interpersonal stuff at work just makes me need to be more alone outside the job. I can't wait to want to be with people when I'm not at work.
