Do you still dream about going to work?
« on: September 21, 2015, 05:54:36 AM »
I mean this literally.  I still have dreams about college.  Some class I forgot to attend - a final exam.  Do any of you who have reached FIRE have nightmares about projects at work or something else work-related, only to wake up and realize it was all just a dream?

I've been free from work for about ten months and I haven't dreamt of it once, which is surprising because that's all I dreamt about when I was working due to stress.

I do, however, still dream about moving into the dorms at college. Go figure.

I've been free for 12 weeks - not one dream or nightmare about work. I am surprised, I expected to have some legacy issues like this.

It could still happen, but I don't expect that there will be any significant number?

I daydream about being retired, but I'm not there yet.
Less than 18 months to go.
I'm in preparation though, exercising and eating well.
So looking forward to it.

I had a dream recently where I had gone back to work.  The boss was giving me a new project and explaining how it was already behind schedule and I needed to do whatever it takes to catch up.  I remember a strong feeling of confusion, and asking myself "why did I sign up for this when I'm already retired and don't need the money?".  I also remember the specific thought that "yeah some parts of work are fun but this unavoidable part isn't one of them."

The next day the same boss contacted me IRL to ask if I was interested in contracting.  As luck would have it, the dream was a timely reality check.  ;)

I've had a couple bad dreams about work, and in particular my last boss who I just did not like, it was a chemistry thing--not because of anything he did or said, just my gut reaction to him, which was "dislike."
Thankfully only a couple of work-dreams in these first four months of FIRE.
Ugh. Work.
Yay. Done with that shit!

I don't have dream but I feel the anxiety from it 90% of the day. It's going down and down as time goes on but it's a difficult thing to work around. I'd say your situation isn't abnormal

Uggggggggghhhh.  I dreamt last night about being at the supermarket with my ex-boss (not ER yet, but downshifted.)  I woke up thinking, "WTF?!" (The setting was bizarre.  I've never worked in a supermarket.)

Well apparently, two jobs ago, my boss stressed me out so much that for months after quitting (took a gap year) I had nightmares about her (BFF told me this, I had forgotten/blocked it out.) So that shit follows you around for a while.  I have faith, though, that your mind heals and leaves that stuff behind... Eventually.

I had another work dream the other day--but about a job/profession I left in the 1992!
Weird. Very vivid, the workplace, the machines, the customers, my particular job there... Very, very strange.

Dammit, since replying to this post I had my first dream last night about work since retiring two years ago. Dreamed I was the big boss and had my previous bosses and their entourage pandering to me, so it wasn't all bad.

So you mean now I can expect a "work dream" soon? ****, I hope not.

I had nightmares about my Worst Boss Ever for almost a year after I left that job. Everyone who worked for him was on anxiety medication.

I have some beeper dreams; it's going off, car won't start, some sort of weather misery.  Ah, just a dream though.

I have very pleasant dreams about going back to work at the summer camp I worked at in college.  Thing is, after FIRE, I might just do it.

Early in my career, I had a job where Back-to-School was make-it-or-break-it time. For years, I'd dream that I hadn't presented BTS to my biggest account, even after I'd changed industries completely. Since FIRE, they've finally gone away. I do, occasionally, wake with the feeling that I have to "do something", I usually just go back to sleep until the urge passes.

Not sure if this is the best place to post this, but watch me sidebar here: One of my colleagues at my last job was past retirement age, but had a terrible case of OMY. I finally talked her into retiring, and she did so not long after I did. She only lived about two and a half years longer and died a couple of weeks ago. I miss her terribly, but take comfort that my pushing her to retire meant that at least she had a little time to enjoy life. So fucking sad. RIP, Gloria.

Edited for typo.

I've always had dreams about work and that has continued into retirement.  I have to say that they are less frequent now after 6 months of retirement.

I have always had dreams about work over the years and still do about an employer over 35 years ago before I went on my own. Just like i have a dream once in a great while i cant get my locker open at school and cant find my classroom so worry I am not going to graduate. But while I wake i don't dream about either! :-)

Ack! Had a work nightmare. That I had accepted a j*b, and when they sat me down at my desk, I realized that it was a terrible mistake but now I was stuck. There were coworkers from 2-jobs-ago seated nearby, and to my horror, I suddenly realized this was the same company that I quit in June with the boss I didn't like. I was fearful of running into him, and felt so trapped. Ugh!
Now pleasantly awake, enjoying my morning coffee. Sadly, someone (many someones) out there is living my nightmare as I type.
I hate anxiety dreams.

Hopefully this memory mashup is just dancing through on the way to the EXIT. Dreams are weird, not sure where the various hodgepodges I briefly remember after waking.

Funny you should ask, I just had my first such dream last night - I'm 5 months post-FIRE. I dreamt that I had taken several weeks off work and it was my first day back. I arrived to find they had left my desk as-is, but had opened up one wall of my cubicle and pushed all the break room tables up against my desk chair and extending out the removed cube-wall. I could still get into my chair and sit at my desk, but I was surrounded by dozens of people eating and talking in this new break-area. It was supposedly a cost-cutting measure, so they could use the room that had been the break room for something else. I went to look for HR to tell them I couldn't work like that, and I discovered everyone had been moved around. I went up and down every aisle and couldn't find HR or my manager or anyone else who could help me, and also didn't find any empty cubes I could move into. Then I woke up and enjoyed my leisurely hot chocolate in front of the fireplace.

Raising my coffee cup to your cocoa mug for a virtual clink-o-the-glass happy-toast to FIRE and its morning joys of relaxation.

Thankfully, that shit is OVER.
