Disappointed with first major trip after FIRE
« on: May 02, 2020, 11:54:41 AM »
I am about to start FIRE lifestyle and first major event I planned to attend after family time, unwinding etc is to  watch T20 Cricket world cup live in Australia (Oct/Nov 2020).

Booked all the tickets one year in advance to the event and the as very excited and keen to attend. Booked flight tickets too but unfortunately in a dilemma whether event happens or not this year because of Covid.

Being Indian, a very big fan of cricket and it's a dream come true for anyone watching cricket in famous Australia grounds like Melbourne and Sydney.

I grew up watching cricket in TV and my memories of Australia cricket goes back to late 1980s where we used to get up early at around 5am (timezone difference to India) to watch cricket matches played in Australia.

Hope event goes on as planned and I can visit Australia to watch T20 world cup.

And other thing I fancy is.. coffee in Sydney. Whenever I go on business trip to Sydney, my favourite spot is coffee bars.

Hope T20 world cup goes on as per schedule.

Sadly a lot of new retirees (and long term retirees) have suffered the same fate. A couple of threads about cancelled travel plans going on and most of us accept it as a (hopefully) passing part of life and make diffetent plans. Congrats on retirement!

We were going to do some travel this year too.

Whenever I get a bit sad about that not being feasible right now, I remember that I know A WHOLE LOT of people who would trade places with us in a heart beat.

We don't have to go work someplace unsafe to put food on the table and keep a roof over our heads.   We can afford to go to the doctor if we need to.

For us, this epidemic is a nuisance, not a disaster.

So in the meantime I count my blessings -- and look for a way I can help good people who need help.

Is it just me, or is their a huge disconnect between the screen name and the tone of the post? I mean, a trip is cancelled because a fucking pandemic is killing innocent people all over the world? Let me see if I can find my itty-bitty violin. Wouldn't you rather stay safe so you can attend such events for years to come?

Dicey - there are only two things shown on Indian TV - Bollywood movies and Cricket, and I'm not certain about the former. Indians seem to love cricket more than life itself.

OP - you will not be allowed in the country. Even if COVID is eradicated from Australia (looking possible in the next few weeks), it is highly unlikely international travellers will be allowed in en-masse this side of Christmas.

Best you start looking for a refund pretty quickly.

Thank you. Will request for a refund soon. Or in case event gets postponed to next year then will opt to book for it instead of refund.

I can sympathise with OP: I haven't seen any cricket in Australia but visits to the Oval, Trent Bridge and Old Trafford have been memorable.

I've been thinking that perhaps County cricket might be doable later this season, given the usual crowds that turn up for that (unless it's a seaside festival like Scarborough it's maybe a dozen people in each stand if you're lucky and all in the open air).  But if county cricket were the only sporting event that's on attendance levels would presumably change for the worse.

Thanks.

Oval, Trent bridge and Old Trafford .. beautiful stadiums. I never got a chance to enjoy match in Trent Bridge. Enjoyed matches in Oval (India Vs England test match in 2007/8 during Sachin/David/Ganguly era) and Old Trafford (recent World Cup match between India Vs NZ).

My dream to visit Lords stadium won't be fulfilled this year before I move back to India for good. Will definitely love to enjoy match in Lords stadium.

Atleast Country cricket has to start in UK with limited crowd option.

I actually googled Trent Bridge to see if it was a facility that had been decommissioned. It appears to be perfectly fine. Therefore, the opportunity exists for the future, does it not? Your glass half empty way of looking at things is not in keeping with MMM's messages of positivity and optimism.

We had a month trip booked for August to 5 countries in Europe. My kids were going on some of it and we were going to see DILís family in Poland. Of course itís disappointing. Itís better to wait and let the airline cancel as you will get a full cash refund versus credit. Prices of tickets may be much higher in a year and having a credit wonít get you a cheaper ticket.

Hope you guys can visit Europe soon once things settle down. It's a good idea for airline to cancel the flight.. will wait for it.

Good idea Cassie. I was supposed to meet my mother for Easter in my Sicilian house, which of course didn't happen. The airlines' cancellation fees were very high and while waiting felt like playing chicken, it paid off as they canceled the flights just days before departure, so refunded everything besides the $20 agents fee.
