BMs, is it just me?
« on: November 08, 2015, 09:32:45 AM »
Has anyone else found their bowel movements are smoother and more vigorous in FIRE?

I'm presuming its a reduction in stress related hormones being processed through the GI tract.  Unexpected bonus!

I'm not RE yet, but I do notice that effect on weekends. I agree, stress is a binding agent.

I made my own squatty potty. Now I poop so quick I don't have time to read the Harbor Freight ad. Which means less money spent.

I'm not FIRE'd, but I'm fully remote and I'd report the exact opposite. For years I would essentially never go except at the office. Get to the office in the morning, walk to my computer, log in, go the bathroom.  I seriously wouldn't go most weekends. What was the point of having a BM if I wasn't being paid for it? It's been over a year now, and I'm nowhere near the level of regularity I was in the office. It's the only thing I miss.

Maybe you are exercising more and eating more healthily and improving your health with more time in FIRE.

I'm not FIREd, but my BMs improved drastically after getting over a chronic condition and being more healthy. It's one of the main questions holistic type doctors ask as good and regular BMs  are a sign of good health. Yes, my doctor would ask me details on the color, size, and shape of my BMs. I miss those conversations...

"Nurses are obsessed with poop". That is one of the first sentences that was uttered by my "Foundations of Nursing" instructor.  And it is so true. You can tell so much about someone's health from their poo. Healthy poo, healthy you! (Says the nurse with IBS. Awwww).

There is / was a BBC show about weight loss with a woman who always made the new clients give her a sample, she would then tell them all the things that were problematic (smell, color, texture, firmness or lack thereof). I think her name was Jillian? She seemed to advocate a wholistic diet as I remember...

People also seem to get more fascinated with their evacuations as they get older... At least my dad did. The primary rule was that you must poop at least once per day.

You know, I never opened up this thread because I just could not believe...I mean, really could not believe...that the subject was really what it looked like. I was scratching my head and trying to figure out what BM could possibly stand for, other than...well...BM. With all the tact, gentleness, and kindness I can muster, I have to say to the OP: Too Much Information! Does the Community really need to know this? (But glad to hear things are going so...er...smoothly.)

I don't think it will matter much by the time I can eventually FIRE.

My sphincter is trashed from trying to keep a seal against the backpressure from decades of eating junk food under too much stress.

I suspect though that my waste elimination will be healthier and a bit more relaxing.

Wow...stress related hormone injection into the system causing GI problems...this is unacceptable. You simply must retire.

My last couple of weeks starting on Dec. 18.
3 day weekend, 3 day workweek, 5 day Christmas vacation, 3 day work week, 4 day new years vacation with new Monday's off shorter work week. I was so stress free by the end of it, there was a little lingering tension knowing I had to go back, but other than that it was great.

A cardiologist I once knew told me that if he ever needs time to think while talking with a patient, if it's an older person, he'll ask them about their bowel movements. Buys him at least a few minutes! (Why no one has ever asked what cardiology has to do with BMs, I'm not sure. Although I suppose it is related on some level!)

I read this thread title and said to myself "there's no way they're talking about poop, there must be some financial instrument with the acronym BM that I don't know about" but then I clicked and nope, it's just poop.

I don't know why some older people become so bowel conscious. After almost 45 years of working in health care, I've made a personal decision to limit my comments to ten seconds or so, and only if specifically asked about it in a doctor's office type of situation.

Oprah once had a show talk about BM, one audience member said her's were like a rabbit, little pellets.
Dr. Oz says they should be S shaped, he clearly doesn't understand the extrusion process.

Also, in my opinion, Dr. Oz is only one beak short of a Quack.

I was sure this was going to be an acronym that I was unfamiliar with.

Nope, it actually is the one I'm familiar with!

Reminds me of my wife texting me she could really go for a BM.  Turns out she was talking bloody mary.  How was I to know that?

Ditto....
I'd add that the only thing that compares to the two or three workday early Monday morning BM's used to be right before getting on the track back when I was motorcycle road racing (150mph+ around a blind corner).

I guess even the thought of work scares the ....t out of me.

Fortunately, there is now a 3+ page thread just for oatmeal! http://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/share-your-badassity/oatmeal/

I'm not sure if it's awesome or terrifying that there is both a BM thread and an oatmeal thread of these proportions.

Has anyone else found their bowel movements are smoother and more vigorous in FIRE?

I'm presuming its a reduction in stress related hormones being processed through the GI tract.  Unexpected bonus!

I made my own squatty potty. Now I poop so quick I don't have time to read the Harbor Freight ad. Which means less money spent.

Love it.  Saw the commercials for this a while ago and could not stop laughing.  So, does it really help?  My wife wants one, or a makeshift one, she's on the short side with feet not touching the floor.

Science backs the squatty potty. Human anatomy shows that we were not meant to go #2 in the position we put ourselves in using a western toilet, which makes sense if you think about it like an animal. If you were in the woods and you had to go, would you hang out 2 feet off the ground? No, you would squat. There are middle eastern and Asian countries where the toilets are basically on the ground. You straddle them and squat. Hemorrhoids aren't nearly the problem there as they are in western countries.

Oh, yeah. I have the same short problem. My husband made me one, and not only do things... come out better, but my lower back pain is improved.  Since there's a hint of Asian-inspired construction in mine, we have lovingly dubbed it the poo pagoda.

Probably a lot to do with the diet, too, but you're right, we're not made for Western toilets. (Although on the other end of the spectrum, have you seen those toilets all over Japan with all the bells and whistles? Heated seats, music, scents, etc. FIRE me might as well buy the whole Harbor Freight store.)

And on the subject of poo... Poo Pourri commericals are hysterical.

I don't understand the obsession with bells and whistles on a toilet. Is the food so bad that they live on the toilet or something? Do they hang out on it? "Oh hey man, what's up? Just taking a shit and thought I'd call one of my boys so we would talk about last week's The Walking Dead episode."
