Anyone thinking about census work?
« on: March 09, 2020, 07:40:12 AM »
I pulled the trigger and submitted an app for the upcoming census.

Seems like a simple side-gig.

Any experience with this from forum readers?

Any angles I'm not thinking about (ways it could REALLY suck?).

They tell me I'll be working in my local area, middle class professionals, a mix of white and blue collar types.

Thoughts?

I thought about doing it, but don't think I have the time.  But it seemed like it would be a nice to stay busy (had I needed it!), make a little fun money, and do a good thing, given the concerns about undercounts.  I have nothing to add, but hope you'll let us know if you end up doing it and what it is like!

I did it in 2010 after I had been laid off.  It's pretty easy (2 days training).  Just had to go to houses relatively close to me in north Houston.   Most people answered the questions when you found them at home, although there were a couple of assholes.  Every thing was on paper then, you had to hand write peoples' answers on the form.  Wonder if that will be computerized now.  Decent hourly rate plus mileage.

I'm now working but signed up again for 2020.  Reconsidering a little bit every time I hear about a new case of coronavirus.

Great idea!  A temporary gig with certain end date is just perfect after  7.5  years of FIRE.  I applied tonight!

I considered it, but decided against it because it seems like the job mostly involves ringing doorbells and talking to strangers, and I really don't like doing that. Doubly bad is talking to strangers who don't want to be talked to, which will be the case for a good chunk of the folks who didn't fill out the form voluntarily.

My application was denied.  I'm an elected government official (local municipal water board) and therefore ineligible.

I sorta thought about it.  But covid-19 makes going to strangers a questionable activity.
