Frequency of withdrawals?
« on: November 25, 2017, 01:03:17 PM »
For those who are withdrawing from 401ks or IRAs for living expenses, are you doing your withdrawals annually, monthly or some other schedule?

I’m pulling from taxable accounts, but I do it quarterly. I adjust the amount each quarter based on my budget and market returns.

I do it quarterly.

I have a situation where I have to take a required minimum distribution from an inherited IRA so that comes out for the first quarter, then I pull additional funds for the 2nd and 3rd quarters from the same account, and finally take my 4th quarter expenses from my taxable account's year-end cap gains/distributions. I may end up reinvesting some of them this year tho.

Twice a year, here. Monthly seems like too much work, annually keeps our cash out of the market for too long.

IB sends me a flat amount each month directly to checking.

The last two years I did it on run ups. I knew what the year total was going to be so I still did installments but with no regularity just on bigger run ups from taxable accounts.

It's been a weird withdrawal for me.  I have been retired 2 and 1/2 years now and just by circumstances, have had one large withdrawal and than none.

We bought a new cottage (second home) and had to bail out about 5% of our 'stache which was more than I wanted to do, but we had to put a lot down to get a small mortgage because when you're retired they don't count all the money you have, just what is coming in!  Then a few month later we sold our old cottage and we lived off of that money for a year and 1/2.

Then, our renters moved out of our rental and we sold that and still are living off of that money.  Meanwhile, my stache has grown so much more from not taking anything out for almost 2 years.  I will probably take out 2% in January like soccerluvof4 because of the run up although we don't need it yet and than wait until later in the year.

I haven't started any withdrawals yet, my wife still works.
My expected method for withdrawals is to collected the dividends from my Vanguard VTSAX
and I have several REIT preferred stocks and a couple REITs, they all
pay over 7%. That should give $40k+. I hope to just have dividends deposited into checking,
although I haven't looked into it yet.
Most of the dividends are paid every 3 months, but a few have staggered dates.

Haven't started yet but my plan is to set up automatic distributions from Vanguard - monthly - as my pension will also be paid monthly - and both will be my "income" to live off of.

I will also have a healthy chunk (held in a Roth IRA) independent of the primary "stache" to serve as an emergency fund for large home repairs or unexpected medical bills.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
