Title: 1 month in; update
Post by: Gunny on October 06, 2015, 09:02:04 AM
Guys, thought I would share some thoughts.  I'm retired for a little over 1 month.  Settled into the retirement home in Alabama.  Done some fishing, some home repair/upgrades, spent a bunch of time with my kid.  Was planning a camping trip to Grayson Highlands in Virginia last week, but the thousand year rain event "doused" those plans. Bottom line...HAPPY, HAPPY, HAPPY.  Keep getting told that I'm too young.  I just smile and say time with family beats time at a desk.  Expenses are staying within our planned budget and covered by my pension. I did go into the cash account to fund upgrades to the house. I have no plans at this juncture of dipping into the retirement stash.  I have applied for a substitute teaching certificate.  It will put a little extra pocket money in my wallet and I figure a couple of days a week tutoring and mentoring kids would do me a world of good.  Biggest lesson learned; having that monthly budget is a powerful tool for me.  It empowers me to live on less than what most people do.

They just don't know, Gunny.  Or just don't get it.  Too bad for them.  Enjoy!

So true R2W.  Seems like everyone is too tied to their contribution to society or to their paycheck to paycheck lifestyles.  I had a meaningful career, but 34 years was enough.  I want to spend the next 20 years prior to turning 70 enjoying life before old age sets in.  Lol.

Awesome!  I'm, looking forward to hearing more as time progresses.

I am preparing myself for all sorts of comments.  People say silly things when they are surprised or embarrassed that they didn't think of or prepare for something better.  My sister and husband aren't too worried about ER, but save aggressively for big travel.  The other day, he got the "Your so lucky" comment!

Congrats on the first month of FIRE, glad you are enjoying it. I like the idea of getting your substitute teachers certificate as you can always use that to bring in some extra cash or just for the fun of it.
