"Oh, you're leaving"? "Can I have your office, and your chair"?

earlyFI:
Yes, someone actually said that... within 15 mins of finding out I was leaving.

I gave notice one week ago. It worked it's way up the line, and was approved today (I requested a sabbatical to start off retirement )

Today I announced it to my coworkers. My last day was supposed to be in a week and a half. A guy who just moved into our dept requested my office and was measuring it (not kidding) with in the hour. (He also said "Your office is 5 ft longer than mine, and has a better layout", and "What I am really excited about is your chair")

I stepped out to run an errand and when I came back my boss asked if I would be able to be out of my office by tomorrow so the previously mentioned coworker could move in this week as this coworker will be gone all next week. My boss even offered to help me move. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, he did this to the last guy who left. The tradition in our company is a party, a lunch or some small celebration when someone leaves, but my current boss is a nut job, so I just got a boot out the door.

The good news is that I have one less week with these people and will get paid, but don't have to show up. Part of me is kind of bugged, on the other hand I am really happy to just leave tomorrow afternoon and never come back.

I should add that all my bosses up the line above my immediate manager were very kind and supportive.

I am going to move forward and not let this taint my memory of 19 years with this company. I am looking forward to early retirement and have a 2 week trip planned starting next week. My friends and family are very supportive and are throwing me a retirement party.

Try not to let it get to you, as the saying goes no one says they wish they spent more time in the office on their death bed. I feel sorry for the workers who had the guy in your old office as a boss, if he is that crass it must be a nightmare working for him. People hire people that they identify with so his boss is probably a piece of work as well, sounds like retirement could not have come early enough in that place. Enjoy the freedom.

That is Nutso.  I've had multiple opportunities to move to a "better" office (larger, more windows, better view, whatever) and have always ultimately said "meh, too lazy to move my stuff."  I don't even have a lot of stuff.

I think it's quite funny, and a great story to tell. The whole getting paid nor to work bit is a total bonus?

okits:
Tasteless behaviour but remember: they have to care about offices/chairs because they're stuck there!  You are free!

And just because they don't show you enough respect doesn't mean you aren't deserving of it.  Nineteen years - wow.

Congrats on the bonus week of paid freedom!
