Worst date stories
« on: April 30, 2014, 12:55:06 PM »
The "first date and who pays" thread made me want to ask everyone this:

What's the worst date you've been on?

I always like hearing these stories....!

I have a friend who has a lot of these!  This is all I can remember though there are more.

She went on where the date methodically stuck his finger in each slice of the pizza and then informed her which one was the "best temperature" that she should eat.  (I asked her what she did and she says she did eat that slice, but cut off the end he stuck his finger into.)

Her rabbi set her up on a date with a guy he said "had a little problem" but didn't describe it further.  Turned out the guy had Tourette's syndrome, which she says wouldn't have been so much of a problem if she had known in advance.  He apparently queried her regarding marriage plans on this first date, planning their wedding for after date 3 and asked if she'd cover her hair at the ceremony when she got married (apparently very religious  Jewish women will do this, so the hair is covered from the very start of the marriage).

Finally, one gentleman was wearing a toupe that had been glued on with bright blue glue that dripped on his face throughout the entire meal.  Apparently she was too polite to suggest that he had a problem, so she tried excusing herself more than once to the bathroom in the hopes that somehow he'd figure out he ought to go to.  I figured he probably had his own worst date story out of it too for the woman who kept going to the bathroom.

I'm game!

Once I met a guy at a party, he was my type completely. He asked me out and took me to a very fancy Manhattan restaurant. He knew I was into food and was clearly trying to impress me. We got to tour the kitchen, spoke with the chefs, had dessert made in front of us. It was amazing. I think we ate about 12 courses. I asked how he had managed it all and he told me the chef (who had just won a James Beard Award) was his childhood friend. THEN he said, something to the effect of "he's a great guy, I even had my wedding reception here".

Yep, really casually he just dropped the bomb. HE WAS MARRIED. He claimed they were "separated", I asked for how long and he said TWO WEEKS. I was so shocked. At least I got a great meal out of it.

Oh! This is a good one too.

I was at dinner (first date) with another guy. Just after we had sat down he looked at me and said, "I usually date models, but it's so refreshing to be out with someone like you, someone really average looking."

(I ordered a steak to go and left with it while he was in the bathroom)

The strangest thing was that this guy proceeded to call me for MONTHS asking me out. Leaving messages, the whole nine yards, it was bizarre.

Wow, Elaine, those are crazy!

Here is the worst story I can think of at the moment.

Went on date with a girl I met on an online dating site (yes, I date girls and guys... anyway...)

We talk a while online before deciding to meet in person. We met for coffee, where she proceeded to tell me all about her fetish for pain, and how she is very into needle play. Yikes.

And speaking of who should pay on a first date - here's my silly story:

I meet Mr. X online and we do some chatting. He's from Portland. We have lots of work contacts in common, speak the same economic development language, and he seems interesting and nice. He asks me out to the Portland Art Museum to see an exhibit of watercolor paintings. OK. I make the drive to Portland (an hour) and figure out parking (not easy in that part of the city). I am waiting by the entrance and there's no sign of him. Finally, he texts me and says he's at the other entrance, and where am I? Well, we figure it out and as we are walking up to the ticket booth he says "I thought we would go dutch, is that okay?" Uh, well, he invited me so this seems a bit miserly, but I say fine. I'm standing there with my wallet and shelling out $15 for my ticket and I look at him and say "are you going to get a ticket?" And he says proudly "Oh! I got a free ticket! While I was waiting for you I was talking to the janitor and he gave me one!"

Needless to say that was a one-off, I never dated him again.

Good idea, I love hearing these too! Your stories are already cracking me up. I'll contribute a less funny but still horrendous one:

Met a really nice, super attractive guy online and agree to go on a date with him. I was liking him so much, but as we were talking, details from his life just weren't adding up. He was 24 years old, working on a degree when suddenly he takes out a loan to buy a car. He stops taking classes and gets a minimum-wage job that has nothing to do with his area of study. Then I learn it's the first job he's had in his life. Then I learn he still lives with his parents. Then I learn he does not plan to go back to school. Then I learn he wants to start a business with other jobless friends. His business plan, in my opinion, was childish and unrealistic. And there weren't any hints of frugality in his lifestyle. It was easier to decline a second date than tell him I didn't believe in his dream.. yikes.

After saying no with a short excuse that we weren't a good match, he grabs my hands and tears up and starts crafting an argument of why I'm the perfect person for him and he will do anything it takes to deserve me. To clarify, we had known each other for two hours at that point. It freaked me out and I escaped as soon as possible.

Good for you leaving the jerk at the restaurant. Maybe he was trying to make you wonder if you were good enough for him. I've seen guys try that trick and I think it's bullshit. I'm not too surprised he kept calling you. Guys like that don't like to be turned down; it hurts their massive ego.

Wow, what a piece of work.  I might hav said, " I don't usually date people who are worthless. " I could go on, but because you posted the story  , i m assuming you know that's a crock.

I might actually come across as a terrible person in this story, but , let's be reasonable, we're talking about a first date. With a guy off okcupid... So the guy and I went to a restaurant and before we got menus he said," I've been thru a lot" . I thought to myself , most ppl have.  Anyway, he talked about how his mother died for most of dinner ( 3years before )  Then told me all about candida ( even tho I told him I knew what it was ) & primary the way it affects men ( did I need to know that?! ) . I was waiting for dinner to end before it started    . after dinner, I felt bad because he seemed so scarred and desperate, so we went for a walk and he told me about how he'd married a woman after knowing her for a week at the age of 36. Then divorcing her when he soon discovered she was emotional (crying in public etc) . first date , last date .
I felt sympathy compassion etc, however obviously he was not ready to date . and save all the very personal info for second date at least maybe?

I'll play. I once went on a date and halfway through she asked me how much money I made...

Awkward.

Random thought: What if she was secretly mustachian and was just trying to weed me out? I've certainly changed from those days, but when I look back at the stuff I wasted my money on (while in school), I can understand the perception that I was a wasteful person.

You're not a terrible person in my book. You were a first date, not a therapist.

Income has nothing to do if you're a wasteful person.

My contribution:
Friend of my was sitting in her car because her date was running late. She actually didn't mind this part. So she's sitting there waiting...and she feels a nasty jolt.

Her date had hit her car.

Surprisingly she went through with the date, but just never called him back.

These are fun to read! In high school I went to a 60's themed dance with a guy I sort of knew. We went to a nice-ish restaurant before so we didn't want to be in our ridiculous costumes. He suggested we change after dinner before going to the dance. He drove to a part of town I was unfamiliar with, pulled over, and got out to go change behind a building and left me to change in the parking lot. After squirming into my flower-print dress and white pleather go-go boots in the front seat of a car, I heard a knock on the window. A police officer asked me to step out and informed me that we were trespassing on prison property and would need to leave immediately.

I've been on some bad dates, but sadly I think most of them were my fault:

1.  I took out this really beautiful woman that my uncle set me up with.  I took her to a really cool Cajun restaurant where you could get alligator!  (Alligator... tastes like chicken.)  Anyway, unbeknownst to me, said restaurant took only cash, and I didn't have enough.  Doh!  We went dutch.

2.  As luck would have it, said beautiful woman went out with me again.  We went to a musical and then to dinner.  I ordered wine... Peenoh Grease.  (Seriously?)  At least I didn't say Pie-knot Grease, but yeesh!  Now, I try to stay away from Pinot Gris because of the bad memories.

3.  In college, I took a very nice, very beautiful young woman from an all women's college to a live performance of the Rocky Horror Picture Show.  I never saw her again.

4.  On my first date with my wife, I spilled how I had told my brother's girlfriend to F*** OFF at Thanksgiving dinner.  How my wife and I are still together I will never know.

I'm sure there are others, but I must be blocking them out...

Girl meets guy online, they chat online for a week and decide to meet at a restaurant. Girl walks in on the time they agreed to meet. The guy is tipsy at the bar and says he arrived an hour early and had a few beers. They decide to get a table, while at the table the guys tells her how beautiful she is, and how they should go to his place for more drinks and snacks. Girl says No. Guy says he has to go to the restroom and leaves the place. He left her with $150 bill ; She had to pay it. She was so embarrassed. The waiter suggested calling the police but she didn't want to go through the trouble of having to explain  she meet him online and didn't have his phone number and wasn't even sure if she had his real name.

My 21st birthday.  I decide not to have a big booze up with my mates, but have a quiet dinner with my girlfriend.  We've been dating for six months or so.

At the dinner, she gives me my present, a CD of Vivaldi because I need educating.  Uh, ok, thanks.

She's obviously got something on her mind, so I ask her what it is.

She dumps me.  On my 21st birthday.

Oddly enough, we ended up being roommates a couple of years later, because we did get on well.  I did tease her now and again about dumping me on my 21st.

Mostly, I think my story is funny.  Here it is:

My now-Husband took me to see a laser light show of Nirvana for our first date.  It wasn't too far (a mile or so) so we decided to walk.  It started raining.  Right as we were crossing the bridge over the river, the lightning started.  We were going to eat at a new up and coming restaurant, but when we got there the line was around the block.  We didn't want to miss the laser show, so we decided to find another place on the way.  There were no other restaurants on the way.  It was in a super industrial area.  We wandered around, but it was just a bunch of warehouses.  We went to the laser show, but we were starving.  So we got our dinner out of a vending machine:  Animal crackers and trail mix.  The laser show was good, but the power went out (due to the storm), so we missed a song.  They didn't want us to run over our time, so they just skipped it!  We did manage to eat something on our way home - macaroni and cheese.

The second date may have been even worse though...  We went to see Moulin Rouge and there was a live "circus" before hand.  I love circuses!  We went as a double date with one of DH's friends.  Turns out, it wasn't a circus.  It was a burlesque show.  It was SO awkward.  We were all sooo uncomfortable.  At least our first date was enjoyable, even if everything went wrong.  :)

These are pretty good. When I was in college, one day I was waiting in line at the student cafeteria. Right next to me in another line is this attractive young blonde woman. We talk. We flirt. Her line is faster, so she pays and walks around the corner to sit down. The cashier at my line takes forever, to the point where I'm about to just throw money at him and run around the corner. Finally, I get through, go around the corner and out of the corner of my eye I spot a blonde woman wearing the same color shirt as the girl I was talking to in line.

I turn and say "May I join.... you...?". It is a totally different woman. Much less attractive and much less enthused about the prospect of conversing with me. She sighs, reluctantly agrees. Now I'm stuck with the terrible choice of either sitting down or telling her that I changed my mind and leaving. Not wanting to be rude, I make the mistake of sitting down. We have the most awkward ten minutes of conversation ever, until she mercifully tells me she needs to get to class. As she gathers her stuff, including her cell phone, she tells me that she would give me her number, but that her phone was disconnected in her apartment. I never see her or the nice, attractive woman again. Funny and humbling.

Another time I pick up a girl and her roommate to go out for the night. Its not the first time I have seen her, but I have never been to her place before. We go out to some bar I have never been to in a part of town I'm not familiar with. We get there, and the roommate, who is a lesbian, asks me to pretend to be her boyfriend so guys won't hit on her all night. I think that is kind of odd, but whatever, I pretend for a few minutes. During those few minutes the girl I was actually allegedly with disappears. I find her 20 minutes later making out with some random dude. Both myself and the roommate are like "WTF?". At this point I am ready to head home, but I don't want to leave the roommate, who is actually a decent person, with no way home. She does not want to leave without the other girl. Somehow I get talked into staying and just hanging out with the roommate.

After about an hour, I finally tell her I need to go. She says OK, and we search for the other girl. She is nowhere to be found. We look for about 30 minutes in a not that big and not that crowded bar for her before I finally say screw it and we head out to the car. I find this girl passed out drunk in the dirt next the car. Now I'm wondering if we need to call an ambulance, but upon further inspection she is not actually passed out, just really, really drunk. We load her into the car, where she yells at me the whole time. I start driving her home, but of course, I am not sure of the way. I ask the roommate, but she is not sure either. The drunk girl just yells at me if I talk to her, so I drive around for an hour until I finally get someplace I recognize. Meanwhile, drunk girl has stripped herself naked and is flashing random cars. She then tells me she is sorry for what happened at wants to make it up to me and starts reaching towards my pants. I slap her hand and tell her to just sit down and be quiet, we are almost to her place. This, of course, results in several vulgarities thrown my way.

We get to their apartment, and of course, they live upstairs. Drunk girl can barely stand, so I get out to help her inside(she is still stark naked, btw). We put her sandals on her feet so she can walk, but she flips them off into the landscaping. I basically carry her upstairs, and into her room. She then intimates that we should have sex, but I tell her I'm leaving and to have a nice life. As I walk out the door, she is yelling at the top of her lungs "Why won't you have sex with me?".

Fun time. Oh, and she calls me the next day and tells me "I don't think I did anything wrong.".

Just earlier that week, after having been dumped yet again by my model (ex) girlfriend, my best (female) friend of 20 years told me that I needed to stop being so superficial and to be more honest and open about what I really want.

Anyway, after I blurted it out (got too anxious), I felt a lot of tension and so excused myself to use the bathroom to allow the situation to die down a little.

When I got back to the table, I found out she had ordered a steak and left the restaurant with it.

I proceeded to call her for months afterwards telling her that we should go on a second date.

What I actually want is just for her to buy me a steak.

Once on a date a girl told me that if she got pregnant she would have an abortion instead of getting kicked out of ROTC.

I went on a blind internet date where I arranged to meet the guy at a thai restaurant.  We got seated at a table and the waitress came over and he ordered a shot of whiskey.  The waitress apologized and told him that they don't serve hard alcohol, but could get him a glass of wine or beer.  The guy turned to me and told me that we would have to go, that he needed a whiskey.  (Note:  I do not believe my appearance warranted whiskey.  His appearance may have, if I drank whiskey.)

I should have ended it there, but I got up when he did and went to a different restaurant.

The night didn't improve.  He ordered for me without asking- rabbit? Bizarre.  Then he proceeded to impress me with what an important lawyer he is.  All while actually never asking me a single questions about what I did.  Surprise dude, law. And he then proceeded to hit on the lesbian couple at the next table.

Hey, if this was you, Klystomane, you did pick up dinner.  I am sorry that later that night I snuck out without thanking you for the rabbit.  :)  Two girls who had seen you, and were in the bathroom with me, offered to sneak me out.   I needed out of the date like you needed your whiskey.

It all started at a country concert... I was there with girl A. Just so happens girl B that I had a past with was at the same concert, and intoxicated, and kept trying to come up and talk to me while I was with girl A.

Fast forward to the end of the night, I get back to my place (30 mins from the concert venue) with girl A. We go to go in my room and jump on my bed and there is someone in it (the lights were off). I freak out and turn the light on, girl B is under the covers naked in my bed.

Turns out she saw my cousin (who is my roomate) at the concert and told him I asked if he could give her a ride back to my place. He didn't think to ask me and drove her back. Needless to say it made for a very awkward situation.

First awkward date - My mom's new acquaintance had a son my age or so, and I hadn't been on a date for a while, so I decided to let them set us up. We meet at Starbucks for a coffee and strike up a conversation about Harry Potter (a plus for my nerdy self). For the next two hours, I did not say a world other than "oh that's interesting" and other nonsense like that. I tried, I promise you, but he did not stop talking! Random books and tv shows, a concert he had just gone to, the qualifications it takes to become a teacher in our state... I heard it all. At one point the guy working on his laptop next to me gave me the most pitying look. I'm trying desperately to interject with an excuse to go, when suddenly he jumps up and says, "oh, I need to go!" and walks out. My butt is still in the seat. My jaw might have hit the ground. The guy next to me laughed. (Damn, should have gotten his number...) The kicker - he asked his mom to ask my mom to ask me out again. We were 23. No.

Awkward date number two - One New Year's, I might have had... ahem, a bit too much to drink and found a random guy to make out with at midnight (TOTALLY not my thing, but hey, I had just been rejected). The guy in question was still in college (I was two years out) and won me over by telling me I was the most beautiful girl in the bar. DrunkMe liked him. SoberMe realized DrunkMe is an idiot. I gave him my number and he asked me out a few days later. We decide to meet at (a different) Starbucks at 3. When I get there, he had some textbook open because he had been there studying for an exam for three hours. He didn't want more coffee because he already had too much. He proceeded to ask me why I wasn't in grad school ("Don't you want to do something with your life?" My field doesn't require further education, and fuck you, buddy). We talked about traveling, and I don't quite remember what he said but I remember it being extremely entitled and ignorant - his parents had taken him 'all over the world' to the finest resorts but he had no interest in any of the history of the regions (I was a double major in Classics and had traveled to Rome my senior year and loved it, he asked me why I wanted to look at decrepit buildings - that I remember). Ooh and in high school and college, I had worked for GameStop for a few years and got scoffed at ("Video games are fine when you're in middle school, but you should have friends by the time you're in high school. I mean, it was okay that your job was there..." because I needed his approval for what my first job was.). This place was in the same town as my parents' place, so I finally made the excuse I needed to go... because I wanted to play with their dog. Worst excuse ever, but I don't even care. He texted me a few days later and said he had a great time and he'd love to see me again when he came back from college. Nope.

Oh man, good times...

I was at dinner (first date) with a girl. Just after we had sat down, I looked at her and said, "I usually date models, but it's so refreshing to be out with someone like you, someone really average looking."

Truth (its you two who met up) or story return possibility? if first... Whats the remainder of the story? ;)

Girlfriend of eight months comes to my family's thanksgiving dinner, proceeds to get shitfaced on the wine, spends two hours sobbing in the bedroom about her bad relationship with her father.

Even my relatives who don't like me very much gave me pitying looks that night.

Huh, I had the same first date experience. Guy turns to me and says, "Normally I date girls who are more . . . uh . . . ". "High maintenance?", I suggest. "Yeah," he says. "It's nice to be out with someone more normal looking."

Sadly, we'd only gone out for coffee, so I didn't get a free steak in exchange for being called homely.

FTR I don't think I'm completely hideous, I just don't do fancy hair, makeup, nails, heels, etc.

So one time... i slept with this chick on the first date. yeah..... 4 years, 2 months, 7 days, 6 hours later and she WONT LEAVE. seriously. Ive offered cash and told her how i feel, im to young for this sh*t.  I cant get her out of my house, she has genuinely bad morals, no job, asks for money constantly. I feel bad but its only a few days away from me putting her stuff(she bought with my money) into her car(i bought with my money thinking she would get a job) and convince her to drive away. My life is a G'Dam Avril Livigne song.    All i wanted was a penpal

I had taken a girl to a restaurant that took only cash and we didn't have enough between us.  I had to run out in the rain to get cash.  On the way, ran into a friend of mine.  As for the girl, she wound up marrying a guy she went out before she broke up with me.

My wife and I had a few..  First date, the original restaurant I planned to take her to had closed.   We would up going to a pizza place.  After dinner, waitress asked if we wanted to see the dessert menu.  She said yes.  I blurted out "I thought dessert came later.".  She shot me a look.  I said at the movies?  She just laughed.  I then realized what she thought I meant.   Sadly, the lack of dessert has been killing our marriage.

Another one was the first time we want to Vegas.  It was her first trip.  The airline went out of business while we waited at the hate to depart.

Not sure what it says that I tend to be the awkward one.

Back in college, my study partner and I took a break from studying to go on our first date to a college basketball game. After the game, we went back to his place to continue studying. When I used his toilet, it didn't flush. Used to the finicky toilet at my parent's house, I flushed again. Bad idea. Next thing I know, it was flooding his bathroom. Oops. He had a good sense of humor and we ended up dating for a few years.

On a date with a different guy, we baked pretzels. Since I didn't have parchment paper, I naïvely used wax paper instead. I also didn't cut it very closely to the pan. While cooking, I realized there was a large amount of smoke coming from the oven. Turns out that the wax paper was burning as it touched the oven rack. Luckily it didn't set off the fire alarm... especially since it was early February in NJ. We had to cut the pretzels off of the melted wax. Despite my awesome cooking skills, we ended up dating for a year and a half after that.

I guess I'm a fantastically awkward seductress.

Friend's sister had a blind date.  The guy came to her door, explained he was double-parked and needed to move his car, but didn't want to seem like a flake by showing up late.  He never came back!

HA! I suggested going to see "Wild at Heart" on a second date. There was no third date.

On the topic of worst date movies you've ever sat through:  I took a high school girlfriend to see Alive when it came out.  I had heard it was about rugby players who crashed in the mountains.  I liked rugby, and mountains.  Cannibalism, not so much.

This thread is making me glad I spent most my life being far too studious and working far too many hours to have experienced all this delicious awkward.

The only story I have to share is how I accidentally slammed the car trunk lid down on a poor woman's finger. I still cringe when I think about it. And she said "why did you do that?" in a way that felt like it was intentional (although I'm sure she knew it was an accident). Ugh.

First date (and also last) with a girl I met through work who seemed normal.

Ended up at a strip club with her 100% butt naked giving random guys lap dances and making out with a few. I just pretended I didn't know her.

Blind Date #1:  We're to meet at a pizza joint.  I'm a little early so order a large beer to settle the nerves some.  She's pretty late.  I order a second and waiter drops it off at the table.  She comes in, looks at the glass in my hand and then empty one on the table, I ask if she'd like one, she says, "Nope, I don't drink.  I'm Muslim."  Errr..  Awkward!  Yeah, probably not gonna work out in the long run with my Scottish/Irish bloodline.  Could you imagine the wedding reception?

Blind Date #2:  Had a haircut tight perm which came over both shoulders perfectly rounded and looked almost exactly like poodle ears.  She must've read a dating book on how to have conversation because her questions came rapid-fire one after the other--"What's your favourite colour?"  "Blue." "You were in a band?""  "Yeah." "What did you play?" "Guitar." "How long ago?" "6 years." Do you have siblings?" "Yeah." "How many?" "3." "Brothers/sisters?" "Two/one." "What're their names?"....  It was crazy and kept going like that for half an hour and I began sweating like a suspect under a police interrogation lamp.  At a certain point she asked if I had plans that night.  I told her I was going to this bar with my brother-in-law.  Later that night, my brother-in-law and I get to bar about 12:30, and she runs up to me.  Holy shit!!  I ask what she's doing there and she says she wanted to check it out since I mentioned it in conversation.  ...And she's there alone.  And lives out of town so had to drive an hour to get there.  And has been there for 4 hours waiting.  Good God!!

I quit PlentyOfFish after having those two dates in the same week.  Screw it--I'm not that lonely!

I have a few...but this one is my favorite.

I am a senior in college and met this girl at a party we threw at my on-campus house.  Super attractive girl, seemed nice, we chat for a while I get her number and a couple of days later set up a date for dinner and a movie.  At dinner we are discussing her major (history) and I ask, what do you think you want to do after college....her response as close as I can remember:

Her: I like history so I think I want to teach, but I don't know if I want to be a teacher forever because I really want to have kids and be a mom (not necessarily a deal breaker...but hang on).  But like I don't want to actually have the kids because I would ruin my body I want one of those...what are they called, surgulate mothers.

Me:.....

We went to the movie anyways because I had already gotten the tickets and I told her about it and I didn't want to be rude.  Sweet girl though. I am sure she made someone a very nice trophy wife.

Back in my young, single grad school days, I got bored one weekend, and was relatively new to the area.  I looked up things to do, and found they had Shakespeare in the park.  I put a quick Craigslist add seeing if anyone wanted to join me, and not expecting much.

Lo and behold, I got an email back from a beautiful woman about my age.  Way out of my league.  We exchange a few emails, I agree to bring some wine, and she agrees to bring some food.

The first act of Shakespeare, we chat a little, and there's a decent report over wine and food.  During intermission, there's a bit more wine, and we even make out for a bit.

During the second act, she has even more wine, which is apparently one glass too many.  I learned that when drunk, she really likes to sign Abba songs.  Loudly.

Nothing I could say could make her stop singing Abba songs.  In the middle of a Shakespeare show.  Our neighbors at the show even shushed her and gave a few evil glares.  I eventually started making out with her again just to get her to shut the f** up.  It worked.  However, if I stopped, the singing started again.  I don't know how long this went on, but let's just say even my mid-twenties under-sexed self got tired of it.

I told her that I was leaving and that I'd be happy to give her a ride home.  After getting in the car, she forgot which direction her house was, but she kept pointing to different streets, and I assumed we would get there eventually.

When we eventually stopped (after going around a block a few times), she managed to bring us straight to her favorite bar.  So we went in.  But her best friend wasn't at the bar.  So I followed her to another bar.  And her friend wasn't there either.  At this point, I told her I was going home.  I'd be happy to give her a ride, but I wasn't going to search the whole city for her friend.  She wanted to continue her mission, so I let her go.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
