Work rant
« on: June 08, 2017, 05:50:11 AM »
Just ranting about work... been at current Megacorp for about a year and a half, there's been a recent change in the management of work in my team where manager A&B are now in charge of managing the work and I recently started to report to manager A after my old manager left.

Had no issues till now, today I'm working from home which I only do occasionally. manager B emails me, cc's manager A, asks me what work I have on today as I told another higher up I couldn't get a piece of work done today but could do it tomorrow.

So I email manager A&B with list of work I have on today, Manager A replies saying it doesn't sound like that much couldn't some of it wait till next week.
I reply with more details on the tasks in order of priority (they will take me all day, I'm not exaggerating) but I say if they would prefer for me to work on something else, Im happy to work on it according to their priorities (I don't care, no skin off my back).

So they come back saying that person X is already working on the new piece of work, that I can continue with what Im doing 'if there's anything left to do' WTF By this stage I've sent 3 emails about 'what I've got on today' and have wasted an hour total.

Im so annoyed!, my emails were totally polite though. The tone of their emails was formal but with a tone of 'I haven't got that much on, must be watching tv at home'

Both managers are new to managing people (less than a year) and to rub it in, Im 10 years older, so frustrating!

I've been happy at this job so far, not sure if I should say something to new manager or to their superior or just keep quiet. I have FU money but have enjoyed the job till this new change in the management of work.

Any suggestions?

I'd wait to see if it happens again before addressing it.  If that does happen, address it in person IMO.  Certainly don't immediately go to their superior without attempting to talk with them first.

I get that it's frustrating, but if this is your biggest problem at work I'd say you're doing pretty well.

I'd handle it the way you did, by informing them of your current tasks in progress, and asking them to prioritize tasks in order of importance.

Based on my experience, if you keep putting the decision back on them, then they'll either get better at prioritizing or just leave you alone to get stuff done.

I've had a couple of managers like that over the years, and I just kept sending emails whenever I was moving on to a new task. Here's what I just finished, here's what I'm working on next. They got the idea after a while. If I was working on something that was going to take a few weeks/months, then I'd go to them and tell them what I was working on, and that if there were any issues they needed to address I would let them know, otherwise everything would be on schedule and I would update them once a week.

Thank you ooeei for the perspective, you're right it's not that bad. My last job was pretty bad which is why I moved on. I think because I didn't act quickly enough when things went wrong in my last job, In extra touchy now.

Dave1442397, I will keep on doing what I'm doing, it's just annoying to be micromanaged.

Yes, it is :)  I haven't been in that situation since the late '90s. The guy I work for now hasn't talked to me since May 8th, which is the last time I went to the office.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
