Man, I love this series.

This video was done especially well - they make sure to say right off the bat that you need to tip in America if you don't want to be an ass, yet they cover the history and current reality that show how it's a horrible system.

Here in Europe where I live it's unusual to tip. Nobody really does it, maybe you let them keep the change if it's a very very small amount, like just a few coins. I've been to the US 5-6 times. On my first couple of trips I didn't knew I was something you were supposed to do over there. I think it was at cheesecake factory somewhere in California that me and some friends paid and left. We didn't tip. One of their employees actually ran with us all the way out to the car being seriously angry for not tipping. As far as I remember they almost threatened to call the cops or something. We were totally chocked. The system is broken. The restaurant should pay their waiters a salary they are satisfied with and if they can not agree the waiters simply need  to find another job. What if you both had to pay a bus ticket PLUS the drivers tip for him to make a living. Totally unimaginable.

Well that's what happens in america. You pay for the guided tour *and then* you have to tip the guide. You get a hotel shuttle to the airport and then you have to tip the driver. Etc. It's all a bit weird. :) You have to tip taxi drivers (while also paying them of course), hairdressers (same deal), everybody working in your building (even if not hired by you), just pretty much anybody you interact with.

ummm...nope, I have never paid  a shuttle or tour tip.

I will tip the taxi ..round it up.

If they asked for a tip, I would certainly not give one.

I never got a tip anywhere I worked.

Plus it seems that tipping expectations have expanded from those who perform a personal service to employees in general.  Hence the tip jars that are ubiquitous now, which are equivalent to saying "just give us more money!"  A colleague suggested that we use the concept and put tip jars on our desks to see if we could round up some extra cash!

When my daughter worked in the coffee shop, they didn't even get to keep their own tips.

They had to share with everyone else equally, who worked during the shift.

Me too!

Between this and John Oliver's show, I am really digging the current trend towards well researched segments made with humour.

New Zealanders and Australians apparently have a bit of a reputation as tightwads overseas because tipping just is not part of our culture. I totally get that you have to tip in America but it is like a massive cultural blind spot.

Not having to tip made up for having to pay for refills and ketchup when I visited New Zealand (I drink like a fish and I put ketchup on my ketchup). But now that I only drink water at restaurants, I assume it would be a net benefit if I travel down there again :)

I hate tipping too. So stupid. And research says tips aren't associated with service quality. They are more associated with the race and attractiveness of the server. Sometimes being bitchy as a server gets more money than being nice.

Yeah, tipping is pretty ridiculous. BUT, when I'm on business travel tipping makes me feel like Robin Hood, because I always tip really well (like 30%, which seems to be about the highest you can go without them asking questions) on the companies dime. It's a large multinational behind the company card, so don't feel too bad for them.

I really wish this was a thing of the past.  It is one of the things that keeps me out of restaurants with waiters.  One would think there would be at least a few competitors that had no tipping policies just to see if it caught on.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
