A teaser: one of posters within the last half dozen posts in this thread will be getting access to a hidden subforum very soon... ;)

As I interpret this cryptic statement, there's a 20% chance that dragoncar will soon be becoming a moderator.  Talk about the inmates running the asylum.

Good luck trying to get dragoncar to keep the promise after election time.

What's the forum policy on recalling moderators?

I think we had one, but I can't recall.

The forum bylaws ordinarily require impeachment by supermajority vote, but a special proviso allows unilateral removal at will in the case of any moderator whose avatar depicts an act of vehicular coitus.

I am altering the bylaws.  Pray I do not alter them any further.

OMG, I just opened this thread for the first time in apparently awhile, and it magically popped to this photo from forummm.  This is hilarious, and I wish we could all go out to lunch together just for an encore performance.  Something tells me that we'd all have a good time!

Huh. I didn't know the stats got that detailed. I took a forum break over the summer, if that's the gap you're seeing.

Shit, now I need to stop posting for a while to fool myself into thinking I do not have an addiction, merely a pleasant hobby.

I can quit any time I want.

Also, I do not think I want to become "Walrus". I just can't imagine anyone (most especially myself) being flattered by that designation. I vote for a different title. Something prettier, please.

Depends on what trait you're looking at.

If you're comparing stache size, walrus is quite flattering!

On my phone, someone else will have to gif you.

There is a hidden subforum for the extra special? Mind blown.  Or does extra special here just equal moderator? Still trying to work that out.

For a while I was on track to reach this elusive goal, but then I got sidetracked by writing a novel and have been woefully absent from MMM.

Having said that, when I do post these days, I still get that endorphin rush when I see my post count go up.

I just need to harness the shit storm of an election and start posting like mad in an off topic political thread. That will get me to walrus status real quick, although my sanity will likely suffer.

When did Rebs become a "Senior Mustachian" again?  Is that the reward for breaching the 20K post count barrier?  The very same title of which scores of us were previously stripped?  How anticlimactic.

I'm thinking that just a moderator forum.

Heh, all three examples kind of underscore my point. Nothing I feel compelled to aspire to...

Seriously, these designations were never about 'stache size. They signified levels of forum involvement/commitment .

TheGoblinChief is not far from the magical 5000 that will make him a walrus, but ForuMMM is really piling on the posts. Who will get to Walrus first?

Will our chief spy will hob nobble ForuMMM to give our chief goblin a chance?

The latest Vegas betting line on the over/under dates for the next five:
forummm              8/10/2015
Thegoblinchief      8/28/2015
GuitarStv              10/4/2015
grantmeaname   11/11/2015
deborah              12/10/2015

This was the prediction in 2015, and look what happened - the last two names on that list aren't walruses even now - a year later.
Likely earliest/latest "graduation" dates for the next 8:
lhamo 10/24/201611/15/2016
Prospector 10/29/201611/23/2016
nereo 11/12/201611/22/2016

MonkeyJenga 12/29/20165/5/2017
pbkmaine 1/10/20173/4/2017

Of course, Observing a Phenomenon Affects Its Outcome so who knows...?
So I reckon that there will be a few no shows in this list too - not to mention that the two missing walruses on the first list aren't even on the second! I should run a book.

Yes, you would have won 80% of the bets in the first pool by taking the "over" side.  Some large drops in posting rates - even going negative at times - in that group.

Perhaps that's why Vegas has gone to ranges this time. ;)

If you have a picture on your computer that you want to share, you attach it, and the picture is loaded onto the MMM forum server and appears as an attachment. Attachments appear at the end of posts.

If there is an image on the web, you embed a link to that picture as an image. The picture is not loaded onto the server, but the link is embedded in the text of your post.

As a result, attachments are not copied when you quote a post, but images are. That way the picture is not copied in every post, and the forum takes up less space on the server.

Deborah nailed it, just one small clarification:
As a result, attachments are not copied when you quote a post, but images are.  That way the picture is not copied in every post, and the forum takes up less space on the server.

Other way around--attachments take up space on the server, so with attachments, the first part of the sentence is correct, it's not copied on every post, but the second part isn't (embedded images take up zero space, or rather, just the space that the plaintext link takes, which is a few kb, whereas attachments take up whatever space the size of that file is--e.g. if I upload a picture to the forums, it may take 2-3MB, but if I link to a picture, it may take 2-3KB (1000x less) to save that text on the forum for the link to the picture).

Unless I misunderstood that second part, where you were talking about what takes up less space, but I think you were saying that about attachments (by starting the sentence with "That way the picture is not copied in every post," which is the case with attachments).  But if I did misunderstand, and we're on the same page, no worries, hopefully that clarification helped anyone else who read it how I did.  :)

Are you familiar with attachments in emails, Diane?  That may help you think of the distinction.  To simplify, an attachment is uploaded to that particular email (or post, in this case).  When you reply to the email, even quoting the text, the attachment isn't there, it's still just "stuck" onto that original message.  An embedded picture is hosted elsewhere on the internet, and displays within the post (or email).  It's essentially a code telling your computer "go get this image from this website, and display it here in this post" so when you quote it, you're quoting that code, too, so your quote does have the image as well.

Did that make sense?

Of course, Observing a Phenomenon Affects Its Outcome so who knows...?
So I reckon that there will be a few no shows in this list too - not to mention that the two missing walruses on the first list aren't even on the second! I should run a book.
Yes, you would have won 80% of the bets in the first pool by taking the "over" side.  Some large drops in posting rates - even going negative at times - in that group.

Perhaps that's why Vegas has gone to ranges this time. ;)

Ok fuck, I may have had 6 glasses of wine, but even I know you can't have negative posts! Unless someone is going around deleting threads again... I have a feeling I'm missing 50 odd posts because of journals being deleted and what not...

(I want a Hyneman mustache... his looks cool..... :(  5000 is so far away)

Image was used as the opposite method to attachments. So, you misunderstood me, but glad ARS made the correction as others may have thought the same thing.

I was a victim of negative posts. When SOMEONE deleted her entire journal, my numbers went backwards.

Unless someone is going around deleting threads again...

This would be the case.

Users can delete their own posts (except the first in a thread, if they started the topic), and they can request mods to delete a whole thread they started, which we generally do (always, so far, if it's their personal journal), which will lower the post counts of other people who posted in that journal as well, obviously.

Luckily post counts don't matter for anything.  :)

Hmm... that doesn't seem fair about the post count... but I can see both points of view.

Lots of sensitive information here, and not just financial stuff. People post personal stuff they ordinarily wouldn't share with nearest and dearest. I can see why there are regrets sometimes and why people have nuked everything.

Edit to add... ahh you just beat me ARS... my post should be inserted between yours and deborah's :)

Shit, if I'd known it would affect your post count deborah, that definitely would've made a difference to my decision to delete my personal journal filled with private info! I'll be more considerate next time ;-)

Wait, what?  You mean I'm not getting cash back at 5000?

You'll get refunded all the money you've spent here.  :)
