Who will be our second walrus?
« on: July 02, 2015, 03:57:18 AM »
TheGoblinChief is not far from the magical 5000 that will make him a walrus, but ForuMMM is really piling on the posts. Who will get to Walrus first?

Will our chief spy hob nobble ForuMMM to give our chief goblin a chance?

We have "rankings" based on our post count. Walrus is at 5000 posts.

Clarification: I'm not a gambler and may have misused the term. I think "the over" in this case means at a later date or never.

Sorry, but you'll actually need 2500.

My forum AI is almost online, so I can just sit back and watch the money roll in.  Don't worry, I specifically programmed it not to kill all humans.

I don't think dragoncar wants any company in his walrus-ivory tower.  When the next mustachioed pinniped is declared, I predict that dragoncar will exponentially step up his posting rate and quickly become the first non-administrator to occupy the exalted top level (but his glory of attaining that dubious achievement will immediately vanish when its name is revealed to be "Nipple Hair Mustache").

I personally feel like the forum growth is too much to handle now.  I used to read EVERY thread title, click/respond the ones I was interested in, and mark it all read.  That's all but impossible now.

I would like to know how this is being calculated - when I do it I get totally different figures. I agree that the only people I have being walruses this year are forummm and thegoblinchief, with Scrubbyfish reaching walrus early next year.

Eye of newt, and toe of frog....

Reality is not much more scientific: (5000 - #posts) / (estimated posts/day) + current day = projected walrus date.  The potential for insider trading on the date projections is somewhat high....

post counts up?

The posters I admire most are those who maintain a high quality-to-quantity ratio across their total post output, which obviously becomes more difficult with higher posting rates.  Depending on your perspective, it requires either the dedication to consistently put out high-quality content or the willpower to refrain from putting out low-quality content.  Sadly, I lack both of these qualities (as evidenced by this waste of a post).

I've always had an odd obsession with post count on a website, but never have gotten past 100 in any forum, ever. I guess, most of the time, I just like to read and judge rather than actually contribute (go me).

Just based on how frequently I see him post, forummm is going to probably get there rather quickly, though idk if he'll be fastest.

You can't get anywhere in life with high post quality.  I do occasionally write a reply and then close the window without submitting (because I realize it's dumb).  But it's rare.

Every time Doom mentions this I'm glad to hear it, and I'm especially glad to have the additional anecdotal evidence coming from you (which carries extra weight, given your former omnipresence in the forum (and, I assume, the vast blue internet beyond)).  I half-seriously worry that my internet addiction will interfere with my true goals in retirement, but then I remind myself that I primarily indulge in it when I'm at work and tend to become temporarily cured of it during even relatively brief vacations from work.

I also find that I'm less productive with my down time when I'm not on vacation. And that I'm less productive with my work time when I'm doing something I'm not that interested in. How insidious it all is for those of us still working.

I feel like I use the internet to fill small voids in time during the productive workday -- not long enough to actually go do something I really like, or accomplish a work-related task, but long enough that I don't want to stare at the wall either.  When I go on a trip somewhere, I use the internet far less.

A friend that’s been out of work on maternity leave for about two months revealed that she’s jealous.  “It’s weird,” she said.  “Despite being super-busy with the baby, the first couple of weeks off I thought about returning constantly — about all of the work I was missing, all of the things that other people had to do since I’m out.  I felt guilty, I felt responsible, I felt conflicted.  So I thought I wanted to go back as soon as possible to fix all of these things.  But now that I’ve been gone for ten weeks, I’ve pulled a 180, like:  Maybe I don’t want to go back at all.  I’m enjoying being around for <kid’s name, unfortunately not Thorin> constantly, just being a parent.  I can barely remember why work used to feel important.  But I sure can remember how much of my time and energy I used to put into it.” I said:  Exactly.  Couldn’t have put better myself.  And this came from a very intelligent and driven woman, a mechanical engineer — someone with a so-called dream job, someone who has generally enjoyed her work, certainly more than I did anyway.  I’ll be curious to see how it goes with her when the time comes to return.

Yeah, this is what I felt last month when I took a couple weeks off. First, lots of anxiety over the work I had to do. And then the second week I just didn't care about going back at all.

I can't believe this was an actual fucking thread...lol. Just found this during my near nightly "god I'm tired but I need to unwind for a bit after the kids go to bed before I can properly sleep" jaunt on the forums.

Hopefully at least a few of my 5000+ posts have been helpful. The many thousands of responses back in my journal and other disparate threads have certainly helped me.

huh.  Seems I just "leveled up".
Strange, I don't feel any different...

No, the Handlebar covers 1000-2499. You've got another 480ish until Magnum.
Oh.  Then will I feel the power of mustachianism flow through my veins?

Dragoncar, you better step up your game.  Walruses are now a dime a dozen around here.

I could start a journal:

9AM: I hate mondays
9:02: I saw a bird
9:05: gonna poop

etc.

Walruses are now a dime a dozen around here.

Not likely.  I don't know their exact NW, but it's probably a few million per dozen Walruses
