Watched 1883 on a friend's recommendation.  Surprisingly brutal for a show on Paramount+

Pleasantly surprised with The Diplomat!  The supporting cast is fantastic, a lot more laughs than I was expecting.

I have come to the conclusion that my favorite shows are dramas, but are probably really very dark comedies. Dramas need to have some levity as relief, but the situations need to be ironic and interesting as well.

Two episodes into 'Silo' and I'm not sure I like it. Episode 1 was really good. Episode 2 seems to be going off the rails maybe?

Off the rails like crazy things are happening, or off the rails like not following the books at all?

A little of both. The way episode 2 ended raised a flag for me. I expect the story arc to be consistent with the book but I also expect a lot of filler to make it tv worthy. I don't want a bunch of over the top things to happen to make it more 'exciting'.

I'm getting the distinct impression that Silo is much better as a book than it will be as a TV series.  Would a giant community really last underground, peering out the window without questioning the reality outside their bunker and fighting the overbearing, unseen authorities?  Trying to suspend my disbelief, but watching this all acted out is jarring...  I get that only 'docile citizens' are allowed to reproduce, but then wouldn't 140 years be enough for this community to be all docile and then the show really would suck...

I'm binging Apple TV for a month and am really enjoying 'The Great Door Prize' and 'Schmigadoon - Season 2' (Schmicago).

Watched episode one of Beef on Netflix. I'm a Steven Yeun fan, so I thought we'd give it a day in court. A little dark...foreboding...but also funny in parts

Beef petered out quickly for me.  I thought the first two episodes were ok, but haven't finished 3 and don't feel any excitement about there being 10 freakin episodes!  Like many shows now, there was probably enough material for a decent 2 hour movie but they padded it with hours and hours of meh.  I'd be interested in anyone has finished it to see if there is a payoff...

Same here.  I realized I just don't like feeling that level of anger and revenge, even vicariously through characters on a screen.
On the other hand, 2 friends watched the entire thing and said there's a great twist at the end, so ... maybe skip to last 2 episodes??

I just finished watching Beef, although it did take me over 3 weeks to watch all ten 35 minute episodes. It explores some themes and emotions I don't particularly enjoy experiencing vicariously so I wasn't ever tempted to binge it in large chunks. More than once I sat down to watch the next episode and decided I wasn't in the right mood and went and did something else.

Which is an odd thing to say about a show I really enjoyed and thought was quite good. There is a lot of humor and clever cultural commentary to balance out the unsettling bits and the obvious high quality of the writing and production kept me coming back. I just needed to digest it in small portions, I guess. It was really smart of them to make the episodes 35 minutes rather than an hour.

Watching the last 2 episodes without the full lead up would not be a good idea. There are a lot of escalating zigs and zags in the plot and unfolding character development that make the ending pay off. Also, it would be especially weird because I don't think there has ever been a bigger shift in tone and tenor between a penultimate and final episode of a show.

Also, having never watched the Walking Dead this was my first real exposure to Steven Yeun. Dude is an amazing actor.

We started watching 'Drops of God' on Apple TV. It's about wine and wine tasting with an odd story line but so far I like it.

I loved both the leads in “Beef.” I haven’t watched the last episode, but I have a feeling how it will end.I may be wrong tho.

It is a remake of a truly insane j-drama based on a shonen manga. I really like the changes they’ve made so far, which gives a more coherent structure to the backstories.

It’s really really good. I recommended it a while back. It felt very true to the experience and feelings of the early computer years and also the hard realities that, mildest of spoilers
Spoiler: show
you can be really smart and have a great idea but so are the people that you are competing against
. It reminded me a little of reading MicroSerfs and Accidental Empires back in the 90s.

I remember that we started watching it a while back and liked the first few episodes of Halt and Catch Fire.  We stopped at some point though . . . I think because the show felt a little too depressing.  :P  We should give it another whirl.

we're really enjoying it, excellent acting and story mspym. It seems like it's got amazing reviews but somehow didn't take off like similar shows. We've got the 4 series on channel 4 here in the UK so I'm looking forward to watching them all. Be interested to see what you think if you try again too GuitarStv.

I re watched “The Girlfriend ?experience” with Riley Keough, which is back again on Prime all episodes for free.

I really liked it. I loved her performance. She is such a beautifully elegant girl, and they dress her impeccably in this show in  simple classical clothing and hairstyles.

She plays an expensive escort. There is lots of graphic sex in this series.

Shrinking keeps on getting better. Wanted to plug it again.

I agree, "Shrinking" on Apple Plus is really good.  Lough out loud humor while dealing with difficult topics.

Also "Succession" on HBOMax is touching on some timely stuff, loving it.

Worried about how long this writer's strike is going to go and if the negotiations will be sufficient...

Yep. It captures the essence of Star Trek so well. I enjoy Picard for the nostalgia (am currently going through season 3), but SNW is superior. I'm probably going to keep Paramount for season 2 just to get them weekly even though it might cost me an extra month compared to cancelling it and binging later.

Chimp Empire on Netflix (4 eps about 45 min each)

Mahershala's voice on the narration, letting our cousins do their thing (without too much human interference as portrayed in the docuseries) and learn about how complex their societies are, fascinating!

I'm really enjoying Mrs. Davis wants to talk to you.

It's *very* similar to Dirk Gently with a dose of Preacher thrown in for a bit of flavour.

I adore Betty Gilpin, ever since Nurse Jackie, so it's fun to see her in a whacky role again. I found her role in Glow to be too sedate for her, which is funny since it's such a high energy, whacky show, but her character was the straight one to everyone else's zany.

Her face is just so perfect for an absurd character, I'm much happier watching her in this role. Her delivery of sarcasm to, well, basically everything that's said to her is fantastic.

I'm only on episode 3, and I don't even really care where the plot is going, the same way I never cared about the plot in Dirk Gently, nor could I possibly recall what it was or the main thrust of what happened, but I really enjoyed it, and hope that I continue to enjoy this show.

I think I mentioned this up-thread! The first episode was so, so good-- it was just one bizarre twist after another. Betty Gilpin... I don't even have words.

I was pleased with the finale. I'll be curious to know your opinion.

DH likes it but can't handle more than one episode at a time. I would chew through it like candy. It's almost annoying that he likes it and I can't just watch it on my own.

Since I liked Poker Face, I'm watching Natasha Lyonne's other series, Russian Doll.

It's deeply weird, but lots of fun. She plays a nihilistic, jaded computer programmer who keeps dying in bizarre accidents, then coming back to life and repeating the same day. Think Groundhog Day, but darker in tone and more existential. The writing is really sharp.

Ofpym thought we had finished Daisy Jones and was startled to discover we had just *stopped* with two episodes to go, so we finished it off over the weekend. It's - fine - but it could have been so much better with only some minor tweaks. Also I predicted the very last scene in a very 'oh don't you dare' way and then they did it and it was as groan-enducing as I thought it would be.

Drops of God is continuing to be better than the original jdrama. Yamapi continues to be a snack.

Enjoying "Jury Duty" on FreeVee (amazon owned, ad-supported streaming channel). It's shot mockumentary style like "The Office" and "Parks and Rec", with a similar feel. Pretty funny so far.

I enjoyed the first episode but am annoyed by the ads because we don't watch anything with ads or commercials anyway. Didn't pick it back up.

I hated the ads too but the show was more than worth the annoyance. It gets better and better.

For those who aren't familiar, the critical twist is that this is shot mockumentary style but one of the jurors thinks it's an actual documentary about an actual trial while everyone else is an actor.

We didn’t try the second season of Russian Doll mostly because the first one was so perfect and satisfying that I didn’t want to be disappointed if the second one ruined the taste.

No spoilers anywhere but I loved that Succession finished the way it did. What a banger.

May 29: I signed up for HBO
May 29 & 30: binged all ten episodes

Yes, it was a good resolution, in keeping with the tone of the entire series.

i purposely stayed away from ANY internet discussion of Succession over these past few months, I love it that much.

That was smart, the first season was perfect.  Our curiosity (to see where they would try to go with it) got the better of us, and it did not work out well.

"100 Foot Wave" on Max (formerly HBO Max). Awesome docuseries on big wave surfing, specifcally the attempt to (no surprise) catch a 100 foot wave in Nazaré, Portugal, which has the biggest waves in the world. Spectacular footage and interesting characters in this.

Finished Drops of God. It was enjoyable. Not a great ending but overall worth watching.
Season 1 of The Morning Show was pretty intense. It got ok ratings but I liked it.
Silo I'm not liking but I'm watching it anyway.

Recently finished the final season of "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel." They ended up using a narrative structure that was a bit surprising, and I know a lot of fans weren't happy with how they resolved various characters, but I really enjoyed it and LOVED the final scene. I thought they also did a great job of acknowledging Lenny Bruce's eventual fate while still letting the actor have a nice goodbye.

May 29 & 30: binged all ten episodes

Yes, it was a good resolution, in keeping with the tone of the entire series.

i purposely stayed away from ANY internet discussion of Succession over these past few months, I love it that much.

I finally finished the show, and I have mixed feelings about the final episode.  No real spoiler, but

Spoiler: show
I came away feeling empty.  I usually watch each episode twice, so I'll have to do that and reassess whether it's because of the finale or the show ending.  It was a long episode during which I felt that not enough "Succession-y" stuff happened.  The ending was correct, so to speak, but the Tom/Shiv piece didn't land for me

We didn’t try the second season of Russian Doll mostly because the first one was so perfect and satisfying that I didn’t want to be disappointed if the second one ruined the taste.

No spoilers anywhere but I loved that Succession finished the way it did. What a banger.

I liked the final episode and I feel the emptiness was intentional.  There was an interview with the creator on Fresh Air that gave an in depth look to his thinking about the characters and what happened in the finale.  I read someplace else (or maybe covered in the interview) about Shiv and Tom's relationship conclusion and think it made a lot of sense.  https://www.npr.org/programs/fresh-air/2023/06/05/1179595312/fresh-air-for-june-5-2023-succession-creator-jesse-armstrong

Spoiler: show
During the vote, Shiv decides the way to maintain any influence is to for the buyout to occur with Tom as CEO.  He's a 'yes' man, so as his wife with more clout, she can hopefully steer some of his decisions within the company.  The hand almost on hand, but not hand holding, in the car symbolize their union but that they're not in love.  Maybe this is what you've already understood, and you just don't agree with it.

Watching 'Arcane' on Netflix.  I know nothing about League of Legends, but the animation, story, and production value is A+.  Trying to slow down and savor each episode - there are only 9.

"The Devil's Hour" (Amazon). Holy Crap! This one was quite intense and frightening in parts. Really dark and creepy but so interesting -- the tone/atmosphere kidn of reminds me of that show "Dark" that appeared on Netflix.

I fully understand the ending with Tom and Shiv, it just didn't work for me, for a couple of reasons.

I'm curious why?

I personally loved the Tom and Shiv ending.

Spoiler: show

It would have sat poorly with me if they had ended up divorced, because they've established with so much, including the mother that being married to men they don't like or respect is just their norm, and Shiv hasn't had much personal growth, so there's not enough to make her actually change that pattern.

It would have also sat poorly with me if they ended up happy because they're both terrible people who are incapable of vulnerability.

Basically, the only path forward I saw for them was to stay together and be miserable, but I couldn't see how that was plausible unless Tom won all the marbles in the end and gave her a reason to decide he was valuable enough.

Shiv says Tom will pretty suck the dick of whomever is in power, but the thing is, so will Shiv most of the time.
