Binge watched 'The Patient' on Hulu.  Not for everyone, but I thought it was fantastic.  Definitely lends itself to good open-ended discussions, which is a big plus for me.  I know that the idea for it isn't new or groundbreaking, and having Steve Carell in a dramatic role throws people off, so there are plenty of complaints people can have, but for the right person (like me), this was an unexpected gem!

I've watched 8 of the 10 episodes and can't wait to finish it.  Surprised I never heard more people talking about it!

It's an outstanding show but, yeah, not for everyone. It was created and written by Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields, the two guys who created and wrote "The Americans", so that had me looking forward to it highly. What a wild ending too!!
I loved The Americans even tho it took me a while to get past the wigs and disguises. I will wait for The Patient to come on one of my streaming services.

Who has watched UK’s The Traitors? Is supposed to be outstanding.

Finished yesterday. Very good!  Loved it.  And yes, I also loved The Americans.

My only complaint about it is too much urinating!  My god!  Sometimes off screen, sometimes on, but soooo loud.  And for like a relatively long time.  Like, we do not need it to be so realistic - you can just have it slightly quieter for a shorter time and we will GET IT.  I almost wondered if Sam urinating was going to become a key plot point since it was so frequent and emphasized.

Thunder Bay on Crave in Canada.

Probably only available in Canada, it's all about the history of Indigenous murder and systemic racism in Thunder Bay, the "Murder Capital of Canada," where a horrifying number of victims are Indigenous, and there are countless Indigenous deaths that are likely murders but not even counted towards the stats because they aren't even investigated as murders.

Everyone talks about the residential school history, but this docuseries really shows how that history is still continued in present day.

Kids are still separated from their families and sent to Thunder Bay against their families' wishes because there are no school resources available for them. So the kids get taken away from their families in very rural communities and sent to a white community that is incredibly hostile to them, without their parents, where their chances of being murdered are very high.

Authorities talk openly about the need for them to "integrate" into the dominant white culture if they want to lower their risk of violence and death. Y'know, as opposed to taking any responsibility or putting any effort into lowering that risk so that kids in their community don't get murdered.

It's a very well done series that shows how these are not horrifying issues of a past society that used to do terrible things. This is now, this is people, children, dying and being murdered at alarming rates NOW, because they are Indigenous.

What's exceptional about the docuseries is that it's probably the least sensationalized, most sensitively handled coverage of this topic I've ever seen.

It's very caring and respectful, and not pandering to outrage, it's illustrating heartbreak and leaving the outrage up to the viewer to feel organically as a natural response to the reality.

We finished Clarkson Farms Season2 last night. It's a fun show. Not sure how I feel about a rich guy coming into town and upsetting the locals no matter how well intentioned he appears to be. The show does give some idea about how rough the farming life can be.

OMG has any mentioned The Old Man on Disney yet???

I'm only 2 episodes in and it's frickin' AWESOME. I'm actually a little afraid to watch any more because it's started off so strong and I can't imagine how they're going to maintain this pace of awesome.

It's Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow as two old friends/nemeses and former CIA in the middle East many years ago dealing with the fallout of their actions back in the day.

It's just so fucking good. I don't want to say anything more about it because as I said, I'm only 2 episodes in and there's so much to spoil already, but I totally get why it has 97% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Jeff Bridges is great, he's truly perfect for the role in a surprising way, he's always awesome but (spoiler doesn't contain any real plot, but is a surprising element of the first episode, so if you're already convinced to watch it, don't read the spoiler) he has one of the most impressive, brutal, long, intense hand to hand combat scenes I've ever seen, and you just don't think "combat scenes" when you think of Jeff Bridges

John Lithgow is also at his very best. He's been great in a lot of things, but I often find him a bit theater-ish. His ease with this role is amazing. I just believe him completely as this character, and I actually crave more scenes with him.

Amy Brenneman may also be a major character and she's been doing great roles lately. I never particularly liked her as an actress when she played likeable characters until she got older and started playing dark, fucked up characters. That lady can deliver this "I'm casually completely fucked up" tone so effortlessly. I never believed her as likable, she always struck me as a bit creepy, but I firmly believe her as twisted, and love her for leaning into that later in her career.

Plus the dogs! They are particularly good! I mean, they're extremely well trained dogs playing extremely well trained dogs. So their intense eagerness to please and obey is so genuine, and not a small aspect of the show. I literally picked the show because of the two dogs on the icon for it, I otherwise knew nothing about it, and the dogs didn't steer me wrong, so they should get some credit in this recommendation.

Yeah, The Old Man is freaking amazing; I didn't realize it was on Disney - I think we watched it on Hulu? I'd love to see a S2, which they definitely set up for, but, oddly enough, I'd also be OK with the series ending where it did. The twists are good twists and while most of them you see coming if you're familiar enough with the genre, they're still surprisingly satisfying with they're "revealed."

It's just very, very excellent storytelling, both in the narrative they build and how it lays out over the episodes, but also in the visual storytelling they do onscreen.

I kinda shudder when thinking of the productive hours of life that were wasted on cartoons designed to sell me stuff.  Thundercats, Care Bears, Teddy Ruxpin, Transformers, GI Joe, He-Man, Ninja Turtles . . . the list just goes on forever.  30 minute ads with ad-breaks in case you get too interested in the main ad.    : P

Then read the book it's based on - Thomas Perry is the author. I LOVE his Jane Whitfield series, if you're a reader.

This started out incredible, I did feel it was getting a little silly around episode 5, just hoping they can stick the landing!

Apparently it came out just after the cutoffs for the Emmy's so I expect to see it in next years awards for sure.  And season 2 is in the works...

I take back what I said about Slow Horses, it's a lot better than I originally thought it was.

I liked Slow Horses quite a bit.  Patriot is turning out to be an awesome show too . . .

Patriot is a level of genius that's hard to even describe

Finally getting around to 'Patriot' after hearing Metalcat's high praise.  It's quite enjoyable, but John Lakeman really needs to learn how to gird a flim-flam joust to at least meet REGAGEP, let alone approach the goal of TRL7.  Leslie Claret's Integral Principles of the Structural Dynamics of Flow was a pleasant find, have to give it some time but there's some good stuff in there too...

I'm watching Shrinking

It's entertaining, and there are tons of funny characters with great one liners, but it's a dumb show. Harrison Ford is great, which is nice to see. After watching him in the recent Star Wars and 1883, I just assumed he couldn't act anymore.

His Shrinking character is basically identical to his 90s Sabrina character, so that's fun.

The show is a heinously offensive representation of therapy, so that's pretty annoying. It posits the bullshit premise that therapists believe they know what's best for their clients but just don't say it for...reasons??? and they just let them flail around making the same mistakes over and over again while the therapist sits there in frustration feeling hopeless.

Uh...okay...but no.

So as long as I don't let myself get annoyed by there being yet another offensive pop culture representation of therapy can could turn people off getting help, I can watch it and be generally amused and entertained by the clever writing and high quality supporting characters.

I had to give up on Tehran, streaming on Apple tv. While I am into Israeli tv and I sort of like espionage, this was just too nerve racking. The scenes of police brutality and physical beatings…too much.

When I have to steel myself for entertainment  it is no longer entertainment.

The brilliant Succession airs its final season beginning March 26. I will wait for all episodes to drop, avoiding any online discussion of the show, and will  then sign up to HBO to binge watch the closing season.

Season 3 was not as good as 2, and most shows tend to go on too long, so I'm glad they are wrapping it up while still ahead. Can't wait to watch Kieran Culkin do a bunch more pervert stuff!

Yes!! Too bad they changed the name from the novel it's based on ("Wool"), but probably done to appeal to a wider audience.

I'm also so excited by the next Succession series, I don't know when it will be available to buy here though. I love every single character, I can never pick a favourite. Maybe it's Roman. When the rocket exploded, oh man.

Was trapped in hotels for a fair bit of the past month, and watched some of the in-room Showtime.  Dexter: New Blood was a solid miniseries (assuming you watched the original).  Definitely need to suspend disbelief in various parts, but entertaining enough.

Also made it through the first season of "Your Honor."  Echoes of Bryan Cranston's most iconic role, following a nominally stand-up guy down a dark path.  I enjoyed it.  Maybe on my next work trip I'll start up Season Two.

I'm enjoying Daisy Jones and the Six on Prime. It's not great, but it is good.

Good music (if you dig 70s soft rock), solid set and costume design (honestly looks just like my FILs photo albums of LA in the early 70s). And if you are interested in a show that explores the blurred lines between intense creative partnership/emotional affair/affair this show hits a tortured romance note pretty darn well.

Also, if you are a Fleetwood Mac superfan and want to see the recording of the Rumors album fictionalized then this is totally for you.

Also, if you are a Fleetwood Mac superfan and want to see the recording of the Rumors album fictionalized then this is totally for you.

I'm really enjoying it too. You're right, it's not objectively amazing, but it's extremely watchable. The casting is very good.

I also just love Camilla's character. The actress pulls off the tricky balance of earnest but not actually naive that the character needs. I only know of her as a model who used to date Leonardo DiCaprio before she aged out of the role, but I've really liked her in this.

Also, my daughter and I watched Cunk on Earth together.  Loved it.

I just finished watching Fleishman is in Trouble on Disney + and enjoyed it very much.  The story of the mid-life crisis/breakdown of a marriage as narrated by a female friend of the husband, while she is experiencing her own crisis.

Cunk is fun.  Great deadpan delivery of some lines.

We quite enjoyed the first season of Sandman on Netflix. I guess it was adaptable, after all.

I was skeptical that a Game of Thrones spinoff would be able to recapture the magic of the original but "House of the Dragon" is pretty damn good. I don't like how they switched actors for a couple of important characters mid-season though -- it was quite jarring.

Yup! I had told Mrs. Miller, "I  quite like the young lead actress," and the next episode she was replaced. Not a fan of that.

I enjoyed it at first too until I after several episodes something was bothering me because I just didn't care about any characters, especially after the casting switch, and an article pointed out that there isn't a single plot point or conversation in the entire show that isn't about succession. Then it hit me that I knew nothing of significance about any of the characters aside from their relationship to the throne.

The show Succession is quite literally less about succession than House of The Dragon.

They don't really do any world building either. It looks exactly like GoT, down to the costumes. It's like we're just supposed to transpose it onto the world they built for GoT, but that's insane because they're 167 years apart in time.

That would be like the makers of Yellowstone thinking they could just make the western US of 1883 just like the present  and not have to actually show what the world was like at the time because people have already seen Yellowstone.

I didn't really know any of the characters aside from their thronal ambitions and I didn't know anything about the actual world they live in, which meant there were no stakes for whomever took the throne aside from who might get butthurt.

By about the point that you're at, I just didn't care who ended up on the throne. No one had given me a reason to care.

I've been a fan of the graphic novels for 15 years. I thought the TV series was brilliant in every way.

I just finished the first season of Trigun Stampede, a 2023 remake of a classic anime that I first watched 20 years ago. The original series was one of my all-time childhood favorites.

The remake started out rough, got a bit better, then got worse again. It wasn't that funny, some of the characters were outright annoying, and the plot strayed too far away from my fond memories of the original show.

I was about to stop watching it completely, then decided to just finish the season for closure. I'm so glad I did. The last two episodes completely redeemed the entire season. Now I can't wait for Season 2!
