So...I understand that I'm way behind the curve here, but I recently watched seasons 1-3 of Yellowstone and it's phenomenal imo.

Personally I find the plots to reeeeeally push the boundaries of suspension of disbelief but its over-the-topness is probably its main appeal. Who would have thought "ultra-violent Montana rancher/cowboy soap opera" would be such a big hit.

Season 4 drops this summer. I only pull for the ranch hands/cowboys at this point.

Oh yeah, as I said previously, because of this show DH and I always say in response to any challenge "well Yellowstone taught us that the answer is ALWAYS murder."

'Black Sails'

I forget if I already mentioned it here, but I'm all about pirates. And Toby Stephens. And Toby Stephens as a pirate. Yum.

Indeed.

As  I mentioned several years ago, watching Black Sails also got me wishing we could go back in time and do a series with young Maggie Smith as a pirate queen.

Bridgerton is so dumb, but the insane costumes are SO enjoyable, as is the soundtrack. The leads are also very attractive naked, and they are naked a lot.  But seriously, I want to wear ALL of Simon's outfits....those brocade waistcoats!

I feel like I'm the only person who wasn't wowed by the costumes.
Yeah, they're nice, but so many people are just floored by them, and I think I just never really paid them much attention, which is funny, since I'm someone who notices wardrobes in shows.

I think maybe it's because I hate empire waist dresses and to me they always just look like fussy nightgowns.

I *did* notice Simon's wardrobe. His was the only style that stuck out to me.

We just finished watching the Fox series “Next” about an evil AI that tries to wipe out humanity. It was a hoot. The protagonists are a Latina FBI agent who teams up with Definitely-Not-Steve-Jobs-Combined-With-Elon-Musk. It was sort of like a ten hour long episode of “Black Mirror”. I recommend it if you are looking for something fun that doesn’t require too much thinking.

Yes! I liked Black Sails a lot. Watched season1 and most of season2 on Hulu while I had a free trial...but never completed it. How many seasons were there in total?

There were four. I had the Hulu free trial for the first season, then I borrowed the rest from the library. I recently decided to a do a re-watch, and got the first season from the library.

I've been watching The Durrells in Corfu - a little lighter than my normal taste but worth it for the wonderful scenery and fun performance from Josh O'Connor (The Crown).  Keeley Hawes is excellent as always.

I've been watching The Stand, and it's hard to even tell if it's good because it's SO GROSS!!!

Now, I can handle gross. I've spent the last decade with blood in my hair on a daily basis, and have spent many hours elbow deep in giant Rubbermaid bins of dead people's bits and bobs. Almost nothing makes me gag.

...except snot...and The Stand has A LOT of snot. It's so excessively gross in some scenes. I'm really hoping they tone it down soon because I so want to know where the crazy plot is going, and what the hell Alexander Skarsgard's character is up to, but I frequently find myself asking "why am I watching this?" when they go over the top with the snot scenes.

Has anyone seen it? Does it ease up on the snot grossness? I can literally handle anything else gross, but this is just so unpleasant for me.

We are almost finished with The Good Lord Bird, which has been an excellent adaptation of a book that I would have said is too difficult to adapt while retaining the slightly whimsical tone, yet not being offensive.  Congrats to Ethan Hawk and his team.

ETA: I just started reading James McBride's latest novel, and now I'm curious if THAT can be adapted effectively, too.

My wife and I have very recently become engrossed in To Catch a Smuggler on NatGeo. There aren't many episodes, but each one has been fun. We've come to realize that there are a ton of great engineers in the drug smuggling game, lol. The different ways these people come up with to try and sneak drugs into the U.S. is amazing

I should check this out.  I was listening to a podcast last week where a former major drug smuggler talked about sneaking cocaine into the US by like dissolving it into clothing to cross the border and then precipitating it back out of the clothing afterward with like methanol or something.  Any chemist would be appalled at how I just described it, but it's the basic concept, that the guy just presented to customs that he was bringing tons of clothing from Mexico because he was a clothing retailer, but really, the clothing was full of cocaine and he said as long as the customs inspector didn't touch his nose or lips after touching the clothing, no one would be the wiser.  I presume drug sniffing dogs or something like that has made this method impossible for a while now, but it's fascinating to hear about these methods.

These operations all follow activity at major U.S. airports (LAX, MIA, JFK, etc.) and they focus on the agents. These people are amazing at their ability to see physical signs of people who may be smuggling drugs in their clothes, luggage, food, and even inside their bodies. They also see trends of certain countries trying to send drugs to the U.S. and will pay closer attention to those particular flights.

They partner with other agencies who, when a large shipment of drugs is found, or they find it on a passenger, will attempt "controlled deliveries" in order to catch not only the person bringing it into the country...but also where/who it was going to and at times they arrest multiple levels of an organization.

I commented about this up thread - loved the series and wished it continued, even if purely fictional.

Just finished the second season of You're the Worst and I'm surprised how much I like it and how realistic it feels despite the level of humorous absurdity and gross out moments.

A friend recommended "The Kominsky Method" and we're about eight episodes in. It's enjoyable, in a mindlessly entertaining sort of way.  I haven't followed this thread closely since we don't watch a ton of TV. Apologies if this is something that was discussed twenty pages ago.

It gets less mindless and gets funnier as it goes on. Basically, the more it focuses on Alan Arkin, the more depth it gets.

"This is Us" was awesome last night. Best episode in a while. Deep insight into the older characters gets me every time, diving back into history, with the music, and all the regrets and stuff, just wow, really good stuff.

And we're into Season 3 of Insecure. Damn, Issa cracks me up. She is so amazingly expressive, awesome as both an actor and as character (I guess they named her character after her). The episode with her and Molly doing the "Party Lyft" had my wife and I cracking up the whole time.

Best I've seen in the last year is Watchmen. Became only more relevant with the Black Lives Matter movement.

WandaVision is high concept and amazingly creative, with added American sitcom nostalgia. Might be a good crossover show even if you don't love the Marvel universe.

I like the space opera of Expanse. Great special effects. I find it funny that the poster above things surviving vacuum exposure if more "far out" than an alien infecting the solar system (trying not to get into specifics here).

I rewatched Maniac on Netflix recently, and it remains glorious.

May have been mentioned in the 30 odd previous pages here, but I'm watching Billions now on Amazon Prime. It's been around for 5 seasons. 1st season is pretty darn entertaining. Good guys vs bad guys, both with redeeming and less redeeming qualities. Lots of psychology. Lots of hedonism, "billionaire porn". Manhattan lifestyle is interesting and I enjoy the voyeurism.

I feel that way about "Selling Sunset". I lived in LA in the 80's and it's so much history repeating itself. Of course, I binge watched it when I was sick a year ago and haven't watched it since.

Late to the game, but just watched all of The Fall with Gillian Anderson over the last like 4 days.  Really engrossing and great overall (except weird that her voice kept getting raspier over the course of the series?).  So in case anyone missed it, it's worth going back for.

Has anyone been watching Better Call Saul later seasons?  I watched Season 1 when it was new and liked it but never went back for Season 2 when it finally came out.  Wondering if it's worth it now that Season 6, which looks to be the last(?), is about to get started.

The Fall is a fabulous crime story. I’m not generally very interested in murder and cop shows, but this one was great because of a long story arc showing the predator and his family life and his internal struggles. And then there is the wonderful Gillian Anderson who is my girl crush.

As for Better Call Saul: it is overhyped in my opinion. I’ve watched the first three seasons? Maybe the fourth one not sure. I am tired of the conventions of Vince Gillian. Once they were must see TV, a breakthrough, but now they are somewhat tired tricks, for me anyway.

But all of that said, it’s still a pretty interesting TV show. I will probably pick it up later. To watch to the end.

Oh I looooved The Fall.

Re: Anderson's voice
I suspect she has something like a thyroid nodule, which are incredibly common, like almost 70% of the population will get them, and they can cause hoarseness. Of course, I assume this because that's exactly what happened to my voice, lol.

Re: Better Call Saul
I really enjoyed the first season, and then just couldn't care about the second. I tried picking it back up a few times, but I just couldn't bring myself to care.

AFM, I don't know if I've mentioned this, but I adore Australian TV. There's just a particular combo of drama and whackiness that tickles me every time. I even love Australian reality shows because they're so much more earnest than American shows.

Today I'm watching one on Netflix called The Single Wives. I was in the mood for fluffy reality trash, but instead ended watching a really moving show about 4 women who are either divorced or widowed learning how to lower their barriers and learn to connect with people again. I'm really, really enjoying it. It's all about self reflection, vulnerability, authenticity, and the ways in which people get in their own way in terms of forming genuine connections with people.

I highly recommend it. So far it's a gem.

we finished 'bosch' and i really enjoyed it although it left some loose ends. then i found out there's another season coming.

watching season 2 of unforgotten. my one complaint is the constant jumping around. it's like the scenes only last about 10 seconds before jumping to the next scene.

Love Bosch.  I am rewatching it at the moment.  Season 2 really is high quality.  I seem to remember the later seasons being a little more over the top, but still enjoyable.

It did take me a little to get into it - there is a slight cheesiness factor that you need to get past.

For me I just the love the style and the visuals - it feels like a throwback to some of those great 70s shows like Rockford Files and Mannix.

I keep hearing great things about Bosch so I tried it. I’m not a fan of cop shows, but The Wire transcends its genre and I loved Justified, And people suggested for those reasons I would love Bosch as well.

I also think the lead character is extremely handsome. I enjoyed him as the man in black from lost.

But sorry I did not get into the show. I thought it was cheesy. And maybe it was those kind of 70s vibe that I just could not get beyond.I watched a few episodes in season one and see the lead character as a good cop who sometimes does bad in order to accomplish his good mission.

I find bad cops who sometimes do good, like Vic Mackey in The Shield, to be a whole lot more interesting.

If you like superhero stories, I recommend checking out "Batwoman" on The CW. It's a really interesting melodrama with family dynamics. In the second season, they were thrown for a loop because the lead actress quit due to injuries from stunts, so the show runners had to get really creative to keep the story going. It's based on a comic book from DC Comics.

I feel like Better Call Saul has stayed pretty solid throughout, I especially like the later seasons with more and more Breaking Bad characters emerging as the series approaches that timeline.

I'd love to see another spinoff at some point - maybe delve into Gus's mysterious past!

Yeah I see the Justified comparison, Raylan could be super cheesy also, but I think allowing Raylan to riff off the lighter characters like Boyd and Dewey Crowe overcame some of that.  Bosch attempts the same with the "Crate and Barrel" characters, but it's less effective.

The Boyd actor was hired to portray a Hollywood perception of a bad boy
Southerner, none too bright and all bad. But he said he wouldn’t play the role unless he could do something more interesting with the character. So Walton Groggins made Boyd a very memorable character for sure, a mix of bad, charming, good, a manipulative wonder. It was his best role ever, just a notch above his role in The Shield.

I never thought his trans prostitute role in Sons of Anarchy was very good. He was ok, but not great.

I'm enjoying rewatching the 2015 - 2019 PBS Masterpiece series of Poldark. Last time I watched, episodes were still being made but I never finished. I started from the beginning and just got to the point where I left off.

I loved Walton Goggins as Boyd Crowder in Justified...I thought he was brilliant in that role. I was late to the Justified bandwagon, so I had only seen him in SoA to that point and was stunned when I saw his portrayal of Boyd. Really fun show.

@BZB The wife and I watched Poldark also and liked it. I believe the last season (4 maybe?) was supposed to be the end of the show as far as I heard.

I'll watch anything Ken Burns does.  His documentaries made me realize that I do love history, just not the way it was presented in school 😁. Is it streaming?

I recommend It’s A Sin.

I seriously had to come back to find this post and yell: TALK ABOUT A FUCKING UNDERSELL!

Wow. Hey folks, if you want to feel something, watch this show.
DH and I both loved it. Every character is brilliant, and it will rip your damn heart out, stuff it back in, and then warm it back up with truly heartwarming character dynamics. A review called it "wrenching yet joyful" and I really can't say it better than that.

If you were part of or allied with the gay community in the 80s and 90s, then this show is a really authentic call back to the experience of the AIDS epidemic at the time. If you weren't exposed to it back in the day, then, as another review described it, it's an immersive storytelling, and even more worth watching, IMO.

I could see myself rewatching it. The first run through was so caught up in what was going to happen, I think I would enjoy a second run through with more attention to the individual characters and relationships. It's a fairly big cast.

"La!"

I recently gave Billions a shot, my interest in Paul Giamatti and Damian Lewis outweighing my disinterest in the alpha dickhead world in which it's set. About to finish season 2 and I'm genuinely entertained. It's much better than I expected. Seems doubtful they can keep this up for 5 seasons but I'm in to find out.

Also Wags is dangerously close to becoming my favorite tv character of all time, despite being the precise antithesis of me as a person.

They can't, the plot starts getting ridiculous, but it remains really fun to watch. It's just that it starts requiring a little more patience with the writers and the main characters. Kind of like a better acted, edgier version of Suits, but just as overwrought.

Incidentally, the actor who plays Wags was also my favourite on Suits.

I only just realized he also played Gale on Breaking Bad. Dude's got chops.

Just in the last month or two I started watching The Expanse.  Really great sci-fi show on Amazon Prime.  Already almost at the mid point of season five.

Not to mention he was fantastic as the newspaper editor in the The Wire.  Add the underrated Damages, and Flight of the Conchords to the list, and that's quite a resume!

Just started watching "Wayne", and I completely understand why it has 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Really fresh dialogue and energy.

It's not the easiest to describe, but it's darkly funny as hell, very casually violent, and the characters are fantastic.
It's about two teenagers on a revenge road trip. The main character is Wayne, who is very messed up, but quite loved by those around him despite being totally out of control.

So far I'm only a few episodes in, but I've laughed A LOT...which is great because I've been stuck in bed for two weeks and need a lot of high quality entertainment.

Maybe not a TV series per se, but HBO Max's Q:  Into the Storm is totally enthralling.  I can only imagine what the real (and probably mundane) story actually is, but, like 'Catfish', the fun mostly lies in what created the situation, not the situation itself.  Kinda sad that there are still folks likely caught up in this internet silliness...  and heck, if Trump had won another 4 years, Q would still be gaining popularity.

For the Aussies: Kitty Flanagan's show Fisk on ABC iview. Hilarious.

Just finished The Game (cold war spy miniseries from 2015), also on iview. Starring the recently deceased, brilliant Paul Ritter.

Also rewatching Paul Ritter in Friday Night Dinner. So sad that he is dead at only 54.

And Torchwood. Found it for free on the Daily Motion app.

I always feel emotionally manipulated by "This Is Us".

Yes, but it's good enough that I am willing to overlook that. I really like storytelling that jumps around in time.
