What made your day?
« on: November 19, 2014, 07:16:20 PM »
It gets dark early, some people are buried under several feet of snow, and we all need a little cheer this time of year. What made you happy today? Doesn't have to be big. Definitely doesn't have to be expensive ;) :D

1) Yoga class
2) Pasta for dinner omnom
3) Finding out I was right about something

I was walking home from work at dusk and saw a large bird fly to and land in a leafless tree.  I thought it was either a hawk (out kind of late) or an owl.  Sure enough, I saw the "horns" and then I heard its telltale call.  It was a Great-Horned Owl.  I absolutely love seeing these birds.  I stopped and watched and listened to it while all the clown car drivers raced by.  Made my day.

1) Turning the corner on my bike this morning, revealing a lovely view of the CN Tower up against a (relatively) blue sky.
2) Doing the dance I've been working on for a month perfectly
3) Games night
4) Walking through a park in the dark, with snow falling. Absolutely beautiful

Finally got my butt to Church despite snow. Good praise music.

Either my ear is getting worse (totally possible), the small group of people who come to mid-week service are getting better at singing, or (most likely) most people just aren't singing since they moved to praise songs written in the last 10 years or so.

Went for a walk with my one year old, watched the salmon spawn in the creek, chatted with the neighbor, and took home a dozen fresh eggs from our joint chicken coop.

Getting an annoying piece of work done and off my desk.
Making a date for coffee with some friends I rarely get to see these days next week.
Knowing that there's plenty of food at home to cook for dinnner tonight.

chicken makhani and home-made naan for dinner! (I love Indian food!)
My son ran and gave me a big hug when I got home from work.
I watched something funny on youtube that made me laugh until I cried.

I really needed that today. Thanks!

After a chilly afternoon hike, I made some cornbread in the cast iron skillet.

I topped it with honey and ate it warm with a glass of full-fat milk.

Life is good.

- Caught up with my sister for a 2.5 hour coffee, haven't done that in like ever. Solved all the world's problems, and even introduced her to MMM (she used the word frugal before I did)!

- I got a surprise phone call from the love of my life, which was lovely, and

- Smashed a body weight circuit at the park.

Productive, reminiscent and satisfying day all round.

Simple things make me happy these day. Of course, just the knowledge I'm ER'ed now gives me an ever present glow of contentment. But this morning I feel especially blessed. I'm sipping a good cup of coffee, wrapped up in a comfy blanket watching the stock market open and local morning news while a cold rain falls outside - the local traffic helicopter has all sorts of shots showing morning rush hour mayhem. That used to be my reality.

On my bike ride home last night in the dark at 4:30, I was in a "had a full day of meetings" mood until I heard a bunch of preschoolers bust a gut laughing as they walked along the sidewalk holding on to that rope. Couldn't help but smile. Completely changed my mood.

I found out that an article I wrote (and re-wrote, and re-wrote over the course of TWO years) has been accepted for publication in a professional magazine read by CEO's, SVP's and in-house counsel!

It will significantly raise my professional profile which will hopefully lead to a new job at twice my current pay.

There is a foodbank has a truck parked here at the office so I walked across the street and bought two turkeys, plus all the non-perishables I could carry and dropped it at the truck.  Hopefully it will go to someone who needs it (and knows how to cook dried beans and rice!)

The week-long deep freeze we've been in is showing signs of breaking so roads should thaw by the weekend.

I woke up with a cold & felt terrible. I was not going to walk my big dog but then in afternoon the dog was looking at me sadly & I thought he does not care how fast & far we walk just so go.  We walked around a lovely park for 30 min's & I actually felt better.  All the leaves were falling & it was so beautiful.

Instead of biking to work as usual, I started to walk from home and back with a big Akita dog I am pet-sitting. The walk takes about 45 minutes through a frozen lake. It was -27 C today (with wind chill, it felts like -35 C), and it felts wonderful. The dog spent the day lazying around my office, and it was comforting to have this 125 pound beast breathing slowly next to me...I think I will do that every day until it gets too cold, which is pretty soon. Then I'll be back on my bike, a much quicker commute.

My in-laws are visiting (a mostly-positive thing all by itself) and my MIL "likes to keep busy" so my house is now cleaner than it's been since the last time she visited.  It's just so nice of her to take care of us that way.
My daughter will smile and hug me tight when I get home tonight, and I will do something to make her laugh.  (Best sound in the world!)
I got to spend time with my husband last night (not a usual occurrence on Tuesdays).
I have the next two days off work, paid, and a kitchen FULL of good food to share with family.
I could go on, there's just so much to be thankful for and happy about.  :)

Those of you in the U.S., happy Thanksgiving!  May the spirit of the holiday keep you in good cheer through the next year.

1)Morning walk through ancestoral grounds.  2)Sunlight through the trees was breathtaking. 3) Made peace with a dog who never seems to like anyone. 4) Had fun time with relatives. 5) The internet has made my day again as I communicate with relatives who are far away.

I'm loving all of these! A while back I noticed that noting 3 good things about each day was a great way to counteract a new-ish tendency toward negativity. It's so much more powerful though when you can read others' joys, too :) Especially Mustachians who tend to be joyful about really good stuff!

Last week I split between staying with friends while attending a conference (way better than a hotel!) and visiting home for Thanksgiving. I made and ate tasty food with family and close friends, got to meet a brand-new (month old) baby, went hiking, and stopped by a favorite winery (where we enjoyed a free tasting and then stocked up at $10/bottle on $20/bottle wines that taste like $50/bottle ;) )

And today I was really excited when I found a simple error that collapsed the data I was analyzing to exactly what I wanted to see. :D Yay science!

Son got 75% on Psychology term paper in first term of first year of university. So proud of him -- he did it all on his own and I think he feels great about the achievement. No, its not a top mark, but neither were his high school marks. But the fact that he DID IT and did fairly well is golden!

I have a very tasty (homemade) lunch to eat today.

Yesterday I was told that I'd be receiving ~$1500 (before tax) backpay due to an HR error.

I can see gorgeous trees out the window of my open plan office. Makes open plan seem worthwhile :-)

This is a good exercise:

What made today's day?

-getting the Christmas packages finally mailed (bah!)
-playing dodge ball with my son even though a two foot tall kid on the other team beaned me twice
-petting my old cat
-getting an email that a former student who really struggled but persevered got into the graduate program of his choice.
