What Are You Giving Up For Lent?
« on: March 06, 2019, 05:06:05 AM »
It's Ash Wednesday today, so I was wondering what everyone decided to give up for Lent.

It's the first time I've celebrated in a while, but I'm giving up fanfiction, fictional TV, and hot showers.

Just read an article about how giving up plastic would be a better idea than doing sth for personal benefit only.

So I guess plastic-free lent it is?

It's a good choice. :) I was thinking of cutting back on plastic, but it's impractical at the moment for me due to living with relatives (and it's often not me who does the grocery shop).

Religion.
damn, beat me to it.

;)

I mean, I'm actually a polytheist who just happens to also worship Jesus as one of the gods I worship, so according to the standards of most people who celebrate Lent I'm a massive heretic. But on the other hand, nobody's discovered an ancient Celtic polytheist period of fasting yet that I could do instead. And it's good from the voluntary discomfort perspective.

That's more of a way of life than something one can just . . . give up.

Same thing as always:

My New Year's Resolutions.

That's a good one, but people usually give those up by late January.

I'm not particularly religious but do practice lent. I was raised Orthodox which means giving up meat, eggs and dairy for the duration. My compromise is I give up meat. I AVOID eating dairy and eggs, but not to a strict extent. For example I will buy almond milk for myself and not make meals with cheese, eggs. But if I'm at someone's house and what's being served contains that, I will eat it versus starve.

I'm looking forward to it. I am someone who loves food, to the point of browsing the cheese aisle and daydreaming what to make for meals. I am hoping to make it very simple on myself this go-round, and other than some items in the freezer, make one meal for everyone (before I was making two meals, one for kids, one for me and it was too much. The meals with be simple but healthy like like black beans and rice, vegetable soup, etc. The plan is to eat simply but well, to the extent I spend less on grocery this coming month, and donate that money to the food bank.

That sounds like a great idea, especially the part about the food bank!

yes last year I think it was around 70 since that was the difference in my grocery bill (mostly from less wine drinking and less meat purchased).  I think especially since I won't be making multiple meals it might be even better this year.

In the past I have given up alcohol, but I'm not afraid to admit that I love it too much to do that. So maybe I can try and pickup a habit! Duolingo Spanish, 5 minutes mindfulness/day, train-of-thought journaling, something like that. Of course, by the time I pick something we'll be halfway through the season, so there's that. Kinda snuck up on me this year.

Religion.

Superstitions, and also self-serving humblebrags disguised as false piety.

But not self-improvement, personal sacrifice, or public displays of humanity.  Fortunately, none of those are tied to believing in magic.

Why would you EVER give up rock & roll?

I LOVE ROCK & ROLL.  So put another dime in the jukebox, baby.

This is a great one.  I'm trying to cut back on packaging and waste in general, not related to Lent as I'm an atheist, but as a good idea generally.  Holy cow, is it hard!  I feel like I'm awash in plastic!  From cups on planes to those tiny water bottles at birthday parties to virtually all food packaging--it's inescapable.

But people do it, and we can all do better.  So, I tip my hat to you, friend.  One piece of advice -- start carrying a personal water bottle and your own plate and cutlery.  You'll look like a weirdo, but the planet will thank you.  Best of luck on plastic-free Lent!

Alcohol. I frequently drink 1-2 beers a night so it will be a sacrifice.

More importantly though my wife and I are trying to focus on changing the culture of our family. Too often our kids are very negative to each other (I hate you, shut up, you're so stupid, etc.) and we sometimes respond in ways that aren't much better. So we're going to be more intentional about correcting that negative behavior and making sure we set a good example.

Love the last part, so much so that I want to incorporate that into my life as well. Thank you for sharing. This may be TMI, but in the spirit of sharing I will put it out there. I will hide encase anyone doesn't want to view.

I've been a sex addict for many years and have attended groups but never really been able to address the main issue. I'm giving up my unhealthy addiction to porn and masturbation. Working on day 3, I can't remember how long its been since I've gone 3 days without watching.
