Currently taking a few pictures, Instagram won't let me copy and I can't figure out how to add a pic from my phone but here is a link.

great idea for a thread! i like seeing what folks are arting :)
i've been painting and drawing a lot the last few months -- the attached pic is probably my favorite thing i've done so far. colored pencil on black gesso and i love her so.
-
Second that, miss madge, love the thread idea!
I've been quiet lately, life n' stuff has been getting in the way of producing much. For now I'm posting to bookmark the thread, I'll post some pics later on tonight since I don't have access to them from work.
-
I like your work, Russ, thanks for the share!

After a two (very long!!!) year pause, I'm finally starting to do art again! Woot! I have a dozen pieces of jewelry started. I'll post photos in a couple of weeks as they start to come together. I'm making pieces to get my skills back up to speed, some of them have atrophied pretty badly.
Then I'll start on the pieces for my fellow mustachians (you know who you are!)
-
Found 'em! Pics attached.
I have a Jet 14" bench lathe set up in the basement, and I do a variety of small wood turning projects. I've made a series of bracelets for friends and personal wear recently:
136: Handmade Cocobolo beads w/ oil finish, sterling silver spacers and decorative toggle clasp (purchased those)
497: Black irridescent Acrylester, nautical-themed spacers and toggle (not quite finished, need to add a varnish or something to give it a gloss)
500: Bethlehem Olivewood beads, antique oil finish, silver spacers (really liked the rose toggle and requested the same)
Currently making one for myself, I'll post pics when it's done!

Thank you :)
I have no skill or training in drawing/painting/etc. (I can color, but my skills are at about a 3rd grade level) so I turned to photography just to have a little fun. It's been a really interesting experience and I really like having something public like Instagram hold me accountable to keep taking pictures. Amazing how quickly you see the world differently when you are constantly looking for cool stuff to photograph - I recommend anyone try it if they have even the slightest interest.
-
I sometimes make up my own recipes, and then photograph and blog them, does that count? I also take pictures of things other than food, sometimes. ;)
I also have an Instagram account. Though admittedly the content is currently like 97% my partner's photography and 3% mine.
Links to blog and Instagram are in my signature. Rushing off to work now but I might post more of my photography in this thread later.

Thanks! Not to 500 yet! I got a bunch of Ebony stock at my local WW shop at a ridiculous discount (I think they really just wanted it gone TBH) so there may be more in the works soon.

Need to learn how to take better photos... Doesn't help that I chose the worst-lit wall in the house for the Art Wall haha

heyyy something cool you might have fun with... both the dark pieces in my last post are the same wood as the blond stuff, just toasted in the oven at 400f for an hour or so. Absolutely eats up oil afterward for a really nice finish, plus now the house smells like campfire <3 (although it is a surprisingly smoke-free process)

Learning to draw/illustrate fashion. Have been struggling on and off for a while but have now discovered drawing with ink and a brush. I much prefer it to pencil. Here's my favourite.

Oh now THIS is a rad thread. Following to see all the cool stuff you guys make, and will be posting too later on.

PSA to anyone who prints postcards or greeting cards of their artwork: don't use overnightprints.com I've had quality issues with them twice in a row now. Just not worth the headache. :)

Here's another little drawing I did not too long ago. I plan on posting more later, if that's OK. I love this thread.

This is an awesome thread! thank you guys for sharing all this with us! Those black and white photos are the best!!

Here is an oil of mine. I airbrush now. Nothing of worth to show yet. The glare throws off the color and darkens it. Its much brighter in life

Great painting! I love the waves.
Also, belated thanks for all the nice comments about my photo essay and yes, that was at Inle Lake in Myanmar. Will post another photo essay sometime. Meanwhile, hope everyone continues to post here!

Cool thread!
I'm working on writing a fringe movement theater piece with a friendquaintance. It goes up in a week and a half! Ah! Hopefully I'll be able to get some pictures when it does.

Geeze I had no idea how much time I would spend adjusting air pressure, unclogging my gun, and experimenting with paint thickness and mixtures. Guess that's why I'm an amateur. Here is some free hand

Airbrushing is hard! Is the bull stenciled or freehand?

Airbrushing is hard! Is the bull stenciled or freehand?
Bull is freehand. Im still not up to what I can do with a pencil but I think long term the airbrush will win. I can cover large areas fast and smooth. The downside is there is a lot that can go wrong-- air pressure, gun needle settings, and the paint thickness/mix. <---- that is what Im stuggling with. I have a paasche double action and a sparmax compressor. I ordered a new paasche compressor with an air tank so I can get more even air distribution.
Stencils take a while to make. I was a little inpatient so you can see some flaws. Slow precise cuts are required.
I am a fan of Banksy. I decided to try the airbrush. Im hooked, frustrated, and love it.

You're doing great work for freehand! IMO (not that you asked for it) airbrush work has more scope and scale than pencils. Stencils can be a pain to cut but you can make them from different materials: acetate, matboard, various plastics. With a supply of fresh X-acto blades and some photocopied drawings for guidance it shouldn't take too long after some practice. But seeing as your freehand work is so good you may want to continue with that, leaving stencils for effects you can't get any other way.
Not sure if this fits the directive for what the OP was looking for -- it's what I do for the day job. Here's a mural I did on one of our campuses with a few dozen students this week, aged 5-14. Incorporates local sea creatures and the distinctive 'golden sand beach' of the area.

Good work. It has a unique look to it. Original looking.
Most of my stuff is free hand. Crisp letters and perfect strait lines are the types of things I plan to stencil. Had a neighbor who made a living airbrushing landscapes for years. I was thinking that might be my MMM retirement. Hang out at art fairs and make cool things like the New York Stock Exchange, modified corporation symbols, and Hollywood stuff.

Give me something to paint tonight. I will take it a personal challenge and post results.
Ships, Motorcycles, circuits like freeways?
or tigers, naked females, whatever... throw it at me.

A Ziggurat (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ziggurat) or other architectural curio?

Free hand airbrush. That was a different. I'm going to need stencils and edges to create sharper lines

When I've done collage workshops, some PVA (Elmers-type) white glue usually does the trick, and should be available at local craft shops. Anything else you need for transfers or other techniques can be ordered online. As for papers, fabrics and other materials, it's up to your imagination. Post any results for us here!

I do wood carving along with the required painting. Sit outside in the sun until dark doing something creative. When cold, just wear appropriate clothing and keep on carving. For winter, I have a large LED outdoor light to work by.

Whoah, those are some creepy rib-gills. And it looks like she's about to eat some sort of sea-slug? Don't mess with that lady.
I see you went with some sort of algae bra, rather than the more traditional sea shell.
I remain in awe of your artistic ability.

I'm knitting wash clothes to sell as 'hand-made reusable napkins' during my county's festival in a few months. It's not great art, and the design is really simple (I'm a self-taught beginning knitter) but it gives me something to do while watching English murder mysteries.

My wood carving started in Cub Scouts, through Boy Scouts. Then off and on through the rest of my life until a couple years before I retired (62). I knew I needed something to keep me busy, so I restarted the thing I enjoyed doing and have continued to today.
Yes, I also knit. Got started in high school because I didn't have money for a nice sweater, so I learned to knit. Made my sweaters through college and again after I retired. Dishcloths were my latest effort after a few stocking hats, fingerless gloves, and things.
And, yes, I like English mysteries. Also AbFab...

Its great to see all the artists here!
I just finished my Copic coloring certifications a week ago. The first evening they threw in a bonus class from 5 to 8pm on coloring flowers. Here's what I colored. I was an art major in a previous lifetime and took many drawing, painting and design classes back in the day. I've just picked up papercrafting less than 2 years ago, that is how I stumbled upon Copic markers (Japanese anime markers). I do plan to do some of my own lineart, but in the meantime I have many coloring books and stamps to practice on!
These markers blend like butter and are very vibrant, they are an awesome medium.

I've been thinking of picking up wood carving. I have no idea how to get started though. I'd like to make gnomes and houses.
Sweaters are a bit beyond me now, but I'll get there eventually! My next project will probably be a scarf.

... You can get "certified" using copic markers?
The flowers look great!

Here are some links to get you excited! Best way to learn is to find a wood carving club near you and go. Unfortunately, they usually meet in the daytime during the week, but call/go and you can meet with someone who will work with you. I have a man I'm working with now to teach him to carve better. The site with all the clubs listed doesn't seem to be up just now, so post a short request on the Woodcarvers List on Facebook. They will respond fairly quickly. If no club, ask if there is anyone near you that you can learn from. Lots of books at the last link's store. Lots to learn.

I really like these flowers. Do you think Copic markers would work on wood? I'd like to try the blending you achieve. I try using wet acrylics, but they don't look that good.

I'd guess copics are a no-go on wood. They're alcohol based iirc, and really act more like watercolors than anything else (at least on paper) albeit permanent ones. It could be worth trying, though? I think it would soak in weirdly, and not lay solid color.
ETA: Fair warning, too, that copics are Very Expensive. Think $5-6 a pop. I was priced out of using them, but they certainly are cool as heck!

I really like these flowers. Do you think Copic markers would work on wood? I'd like to try the blending you achieve. I try using wet acrylics, but they don't look that good.
I just took an online watercolor class where one of the assignments was watercolor on wood -- she treated the wood with a mixture of clear gesso and matte varnish first. I haven't done the assignment yet myself but the work she and the other students did was GORGEOUS. And the surface looks to be very forgiving. Might be worth playing with.

Duh! Great thought Ms Madge.
Gesso will solve a lot of problems. :)

great idea for a thread! i like seeing what folks are arting :)
i've been painting and drawing a lot the last few months -- the attached pic is probably my favorite thing i've done so far. colored pencil on black gesso and i love her so.
I've only just come across this thread, but I have to say this is a fantastic drawing! I'm using it as my desktop background - I hope that's OK.

This is the good kind of foam: the foam where people don't argue but instead share information and tips. I'm at work, but I'll check out those links later this weekend. Thank you!

I've had a bit of an art hiatus, but recently started watching some youtube art tutorials, and did some yesterday and today.
Posted in order completed - I think the second one is my favourite so far, I wasn't sure about the third one, but it is growing on me.

Those are pro quality. I have always been good at whatever visual art I do but have lacked pro quality. I think it may be a failure of commitment to and mastery of a style. I used to have a problem with critzism of my work. I felt like it had to completely come from me to be genuine. I have matured a little and learned to view others techniques as tools for self expression. Great work man.

"Pro quality" is, I think, just time. Not just with a particular piece, but with a medium. That, and having a clear idea of what you're making. Composition and structure, subject emotional resonance, picking your color palette... these are all things that ought to be carefully thought about. :) If you have a gut reaction, that's fine, but it's important to deconstruct why. Is it because the colors are complimentary? Or that grayscale lends itself to starkness which is what you are trying to convey?
Not quite sure what you mean by "others techniques as tools for self expression." Unless you invented the pencil, all your work has been on borrowed tools. In fact, I'd harbor a guess that 99% of your images, your sense of what looks good, of what constitutes art at all, are borrowed. Which is okay! That's just what it means to work in not in a vacuum, but as part of a larger tradition. We make things that resonate, with ourselves and others, specifically for that reason. :)
... that got long winded.
XD
I have art feels.

You captured the essence of what I was trying to say. My lines for what constitutes copying were blurred. I have a different view now. And I probably could give more time to one medium. I should spend more time making art in general. I enjoy it
My aunt used to be a character illustrator before they went computer animation. She says if you master a freehand circle you have mastered control. She holds a pencil like a paint brush way at the back with 2-4" of pencil in front. She took a few years break to mother her kids and the industry changed. She doesn't use her talent now she nannies. It's sad. She drew An American Tail, Rockadoodle, and All Dogs Go To Heaven
I had a neighbor years ago that did airbrush landscapes for a really good living. I tried to gain some pearls from him but he was much more reluctant to share. He would just tell me I could make whatever I wanted to.

I can't draw or cut a straight line, so my 14-year-old daughter's artistic bent fascinates me. She's exploring lots of different media - acrylic, oil, watercolor, colored pencils, charcoal; on canvas, on paper, on wood. Each thing she does becomes my favorite - the latest being a 10" x 6" oil on wood. Several people have asked about buying it (!!), but we really want to keep the original, so we're considering doing a limited-edition giclee print set of it.

I love seeing everyones projects!
This summer I have tie dyed twice with my kids. My daughter does hers, but I do mine and stuff for my son.
Also, my daughter and I took a mosaic workshop and we each made a tile. Hers is the sunset and mine is the abstract blue one.
And I am taking a ceramics class. I have taken a couple with the kids, but didnt really get to do my own projects. This is a class for beginner adults at the park district.

MsMadge your coloured pencils on black gesso artwork is wonderful!!
Thanks Stachey! Your apple looks awesome! I love messing around with watercolors but don't have a lot of skill getting anything realistic-looking out of them. Well done :)
-
I am about to start designing a plush toy for me and my GF to make together. I'm pretty excited as it will incorporate so many different things into one piece.
-
Thank you so much Ms Madge! Yeah I'm really pleased at how realistic I'm getting things to look.
I've got a question for you...with your altered book do you gesso the pages or just paint directly on the page? I've seen pictures of altered books but haven't tried it myself so was wondering what the procedure is.
-
Oooh I love talking about altered books!
I have two types.
1) The first type, I rip out about half the pages in the book and gesso or collage with matte medium on the pages. You rip out the pages so that there's room for the additional layers of gesso/paint/collage in the book, without breaking the spine. I especially love working with black gesso. Everything looks so COOL on it, and it feels great to draw and paint on it.
2) The second type, I rip out about 70% of the pages in the book, and I bind in new signatures of nice watercolor/mixed media paper. So then I normally gesso or collage-with-matte-medium on the original book pages, and I can play with watercolors on the blank watercolor pages. So much fun!
-
Ms Madge I just want you to now that literally last night I decided to do an altered book visual journal... and now I feel much more able to tackle it!
:D
Serendipity!
Any tips for binding in new pages?
-
Cool! I love working in an altered book, it really helps with the whole where-do-I-start thing I get on a blank page sometimes.
Let me start by saying I learned how to do this from a video I paid to access or else I would send it to ya. (An online class by Jane Davenport called Supplies Me if anyone's interested.) I'm sure you can find some good tutorials on Youtube tho.
Here's what I know (not an expert)
- use a book that is sewn, not glued, binding
- remove a bunch of pages, you can use a straight edge to make it easier to tear them out. Try to get out all the crumbs out of the stitching
- open up the back of the book by slitting the back endsheet where it folds. This exposes the binding
- make your signatures and decide where you want them in the book
- use waxed linen to sew the signatures into the places you want them (I use a 3 or 5 hole pamphlet stitch)
- when you've got them all in, close the back binding again with tape
I love doing this so much that I had to agree to myself that I wouldn't make any more altered books until I fill some of the ones I have! Have fun :)
-
Cheers Ms Madge! That does sound like fun. I'll have to add that to my list of art projects to try out.
-
Thanks for the tips, Ms Madge! :D

So today I had a hankering to watch underwater videos on YouTube while dicking around in my sketchbook. This is what I ended up with.
ETA: Hmm it posted sideways -- the white fan is supposed to be at the top -- but I guess it's okay. Meant to say it's watercolor background with gel pen on top. Super fun and relaxing to create :)

i knooooooow. the teacher i take classes from has a term for wanting to buy ALL the art supplies -- "rainbowitis" -- and i definitely have it bad. buying art supplies was my #1 mustachian downfall over the last year, slightly over taking the "stupid shoes" and "unnecessarily fancy makeup" categories, the winners for the previous two years.
at this point, the only reason i don't buy any more is that i already have them all. D'OH!
-
LOL Rainbowitis...I like it!

only two more weeks of my beginner ceramics class, these are the second and third projects I did. Im really pleased with how they turned out.

I created a book cover for my next short story. It was in Photoshop, which I'm trying to learn. Nothing too complicated, but I think it turned out pretty neat!

I like the book cover! Together with the title, it intrigues me.

I'm going to cheat by sharing something from wayyyyyy back - i.e., not something I'm doing RIGHT NOW.
An instrumental piece I composed ages ago. Unfortunately it's just synth and not played by real musicians with real instruments. But it's still one of my favourites.

The story is set in Peru, and it follows the sun god's quest to save the kidnapped moon. He's joined by a Celtic war goddess, a Nabatean god of caravans, and a river goddess from Cameroon. Spoiler alert: the moon saves the sun.
I had a lot of fun writing it.

I started this chess set before Hurricane Harvey (HH) came for a visit. I live in Rockport, TX where the eye hit the coast. I got the carving done; and then evacuated for a week. We came back when there was non-potable water for showers, but no electricity. A lot of cleanup, new fence, windows, roof, tree removal, etc. and I had time to paint them. Here is my latest wood carving project.
-
That is great work Joggernot. Do you keep your crafts for yourself or do you make them to sell?
-
I sell some wood carvings at local markets. I made the chess set for my son who plays chess, but he didn't want a "hillbilly" chess set. If I sell it the price would be $400 and doesn't include the chess board (made by my son in high school shop). Thanks for asking.
-
Damn Russ, I really like your lamp.

Can I revive this thread?
I'm working on a reader's theater piece written by a local playwright. There's a festival next month with a few evenings of these performances celebrating new works from our state. It's my first time performing a reading and my first time performing at a professional theater (well, we are volunteers, but still cool).
I want to pick up a cheap charcoal grill this summer to try this pit firing technique: https://ceramicartsnetwork.org/daily/firing-techniques/wood-kiln-firing/grilling-season/
-
Good idea to revive the thread. :) Good luck with the performance!
I'm working on an art piece and need to construct a really shallow cabinet for it. Like, just 1 inch deep. The outside will have art, the inside will have different art when opened. It will be mounted on a wall.
Anyone have suggestions? Should I just hack something together? I want to keep it fairly lightweight.

@Orvell Could you take a really shallow and lightweight medicine cabinet, remove the mirror and shelves, and use that? The plastic one in my apartment is VERY lightweight, maybe too much so for what you're trying to do.
@Chranstronaut Glad to see this thread again. Good luck with your performance. And thanks for that really cool link on the pit firing technique.

thanks for bringing this thread back! Love all the recent stuff. Here's one of my more recent photos.

Glenstashe, I feel like I'm being sucked into the photo with the perspective you used.

You could try balsa wood, depending on the weight of the art that goes inside. Most small hardware stores or hobby shops that sell model airplanes will have a section of different sizes of it. You can also get square dowels in different sizes which might be an easy way to precisely set your depth in the cabinet and create shelves if needed. Balsa is often thin enough to score and snap with a razor, or to cut by hand with a small saw.

I ended up going that route, at least for the prototype I'm working on. :)
Deconstructed balsa wood cheapo box, with the first layer of paper clay applied. I have better hinges and cabinet hardware I picked up from the Restore to fit to it when it's all ready to be put back together.

I bought a used Weber grill off Craigslist last week, so my illicit backyard ceramics project is moving forward. Now to pick a low-firing clay and get after it! I'm hoping to have some good weather over Memorial day weekend and maybe have pictures to share soon.
