Which cruise line would be the best choice
« on: October 10, 2019, 08:28:56 PM »
I can't get my family to understand I don't want or need stuff so I was thinking about asking for gift cards for a cruise.  What are your opinions of Carnival and Princess cruise lines? Also any other positive or negative advice/opinion of cruises.

Carnival and Princess are festering germ pools.  You’re on a boat with 5,000 other people and only get to scratch the surface of any place you visit.  I’d suggest asking for a Seabourne or Viking cruise if you’re really deadset on a cruise.

My opinion is that Carnival is a part boat for "young adults"

I do not really have an opinion of Princess.

I've greatly enjoyed cruises with Celebrity and will likely again in the future.

Its as much about the itinerary as it is about the cruise line.

I was trying to pick a cruise line that they could easily buy the gift cards at the grocery store.  May have to rethink this idea.

Another easy choice is Holland America Line.

I have family members who swear by Royal
Caribbean.

I have gone Carnival and agree it is for young adults. Or just young. It is for those with not a lot of money who want to get plastered.

Princess was okay except I didn’t like all the surcharges for food at restaurants. Or was that Norwegian? It has been a while.

I've done Princess, Celebrity, and Holland America.  I only cruise because it's a way to travel and spend time with my parents at the same time, who live 2000 miles away.  My parents are older so cruising is a way they don't have to pack, unpack, and transfers and everything is planned for them.  I probably won't chose to cruise otherwise.  Too many people, too much waiting around (like you have to get to the theater 1/2 hour early to get a seat to see a 50 minute show), germs, not eco-friendly.

Holland America is definitely an older crowd.  Celebrity is just a small step up from Princess, both are OK.

Thanks for the input everyone.  It's just one of those bucket list things, I think I would like to try it once.  If I go with Holland maybe I can find me a sugar momma!  :)

Maybe take a look at some of the itineraries for each line and how much they would cost.  Could help you pick.  I think different lines are more or less likely to take certain routes

Uncruise. Super small ships. All day adventure. Not mustachian prices, but if you are asking for a gift that would offset the higher expense.

The shorter the cruise the more "party boat" atmosphere you'll get.

go for a week or longer if you can. far more relaxed without everyone trying to drink the ship dry.

do check out all the different charges onboard (tipping/service charge and restaurant upcharges for the non buffet and main dining room)

I've cruised with Norwegian, Carnival and Royal. they were all fine.
My parents have cruised with everyone and the only one they avoid is MSC.

Do your research. go to cruise critic and read actual reviews  - preferably from member on there who have quite a few post.

single liners like some of the ones above are not representative and not helpful to you for picking out a cruise line/ship.

have fun!

Keep in mind that cruise ships don't actually ever want you to leave the ship since that would mean you spending your money somewhere else. They only make stops because it's a necessity. As a result, Disney (and Carnival?) bought their own island in the Carribbean so that the cruisers can debark and give all their money right back them. Nothing is wasted on the locals.

I overheard someone talking about their cruise where they had to wait in line 30 minutes just to disembark. It was a big boat, of course. It didn't sound attractive to me.

And, for those that care, cruise ships are foul polluters. No one at sea can measure the exhaust or complain, so no one knows or does anything about it.

I understood cruise boats were ecological disasters. Are they not?

How about cruising by sail boat? It seems much more connected to the sea.

I went on a one day cruise out of Tampa to the Bahamas and it was horrid! They herded everyone to the dining room, fed us breakfast and about 50% were puking all over the place. It was rough seas and they could not fill the pool. One woman threw up on a glass candy counter. They had barf bags lined on the rail as you walked up the stairs.

It was a long day and when we arrived in the Bahamas we took a cab to the down town and just about everything was closed, it was Sunday. There was a bar and some souvenir shops open.

That whole trip sucked and I would never recommend it. It was pretty cheap, maybe $99 a person but gag me! Lucky we didn't get sick!

Granted, this is not what OP is talking about but if you ever consider a one day cruise, you may experience what we did!

The CDC puts out information on cruise ship sanitation, real good for free, here: True Facts About Cruise Ships

Society has a gestalt concept of cruise ships as floating cesspools of norovirus, but widespread outbreak is fairly low. What you should really be concerned with is the fact that if any of those ships roll, you will die from drowning, probably far slower than you'd want.

Lines have a general vibe (Carnival = party, for example), but I think the best way to pick a cruise is to find an itinerary you like.  I'd target a specific cruise that it very far out, and decide on one that looks good, and then ask for that line.    There are many different types of cruises, even within the same line.  There are those that take you from one private beach to another, so that most of your time is spent either on a beach or doing beach/water activities.  Then there are those that are basically a floating bus that allow you to wake up in a different city each day.  And many in between.  Maybe you want to experience the Panama Canal.  Maybe you want to see Russia without the PITA visa process (only practicable way to do that is a cruise ship stop, but you do need a licenses tour guide/organization).

Where do you want to leave from and arrive to?  Does it need to be the same place?  Is there a cruise port near you, and if so, does it have itineraries that interest you?  If not, you need to factor in travel, and likely a hotel for the night before, since flying the day of the cruise can create major issue (and expense) if you flight is delayed.

Also, you need to think about how much you can reasonably be gifted, and then how much you are willing to pitch in on your own.  Unless you have very generous family and/or are wanting to do a 3-4 day Mexican party cruise, these can vet very expensive.  With tips, fees, travel to and from the cruise, excursions, and alcohol if you drink, plus any other upgrades, the "ticket" price of the cruise can easily be 1/3 or less of the expense.

and perhaps there was lots of messed up memories.

I'd go over to cruise critic (as I suggested above) and read about real cruises from peopel who actually went on the cruise they claim to have been on. it gives a lot more real info and impressions and would actually be a more useful tool than a few random memories of things that may or may not have happened.

Hey it was a booze cruise!  Messed up memories are part of the package.  My last booze cruise was a three day sojourn to the frickin moon!

Checked with the Hub and he said it was Ft Lauderdale to Bahama's. This was WAY back in the 1980's. I believe the cruise line was called Sea Escape. It was horrible! It was a cheap price and I guess we got what we paid for.

I have no desire to ever go on any cruise, even a luxury cruise does not appeal to me.

In rough order of ages you'll find on the ship:
Carnival - young, party (drinking) atmosphere, in part as it's seen to be one of the cheaper lines and those more affordable for that crowd
Royal - caters to families
Princess - older crowd (in our 30s, we felt quite out of place on our two trips, particularly the 10 day one)
Holland - very old crowd

Of course, with any of these you'll find a mix of people.  You can also manage it: go over a school vacation week, and there will be more kids.  Take a longer (~10 day) trip over school time, and there will likely be fewer.

Carnival and Princess are owned by the same company.  Princess is seen as more upscale.
Royal and Celebrity are owned by the same company.  Celebrity is seen as more upscale.

Be aware there are gratuities that will be added to your final bill (e.g. $12-15/day).  Be prepared for a lot of upcharge opportunities: room, drinks, better dining, internet, photos, spa, excursions, even flowers, room decor, tux rentals...

How about cruising by sail boat? It seems much more connected to the sea.

I looked it up. These boats don't look healthy for the environment or people. The top three results from a search, including from Forbes, not tree-huggers.

1. How do cruise ships impact on the environment: https://ecobnb.com/blog/2013/07/how-does-cruise-ships-impact-on-the-environment

2. 7 places being ruined by cruise ships: https://www.insider.com/cruise-ships-environmental-impact-tourism-2019-9

3. Cruise Ship Pollution Is Causing Serious Health And Environmental Problems: https://www.forbes.com/sites/jamesellsmoor/2019/04/26/cruise-ship-pollution-is-causing-serious-health-and-environmental-problems

If you take other people and cultures into account, sailing seems like a healthier choice.

I think I'm going to make a new post and try this from a different angle.

Why don't you consider going to a resort in Orlando Florida that has all kinds of amenities? Plus, there is Disney, Sea World and tons of other things to see and do for entertainment. Tons of restaurants.

Some hotels in Florida have river pools and are just gorgeous. Tennis courts, golf, spas, gyms, transportation to nearby venues.

You could also consider adult only resorts. Look them up. They are all over. I saw some in the Florida Keys and Caribbean.
