Quality bourbon
« on: June 12, 2017, 11:56:30 PM »
Any bourbon drinkers here?  Is it anti mustachian to drink rare bourbons? What are your views on flipping a bottle you happen onto?

I enjoy quality bourbon and cigars with my blow money, but it doesn't match up with my budget and normal spending habits.  I found a bottle of Weller 12 in the wild, I'm struggling with wanting to flip it for the profit and wanting to enjoy it.

We drink whiskey and my husband smokes cigars. Since neither of those habits are particularly healthy, we limit our quantity and make sure that we only indulge when we really want to (and not every time we want to). This in turn keeps the budget in check. We've been able to find reasonably priced bottles that keep us happy and last a while. We tend to save the rare and expensive stuff for tasting events where you don't pay extra.

I've drunk $$$$ bourbon and $ bourbon, and honestly my go-to is Buffalo Trace, a $$ or $ bourbon.  It's about $25/bottle and I prefer it to $35-40 bottles.  Jim Beam Black is also shockingly good for the price.

How hard would it be for the OP to get more money?  How hard would it be to get more Weller?  (I'm not even familiar with that brand).

If you aren't going short in another area where drinking the bourbon would be financially stupid; enjoy it.

I once bought a bottle of 18 y/o Jameson ($100).  It was very good.  It was not four times as good as a standard bottle of Jameson (which I think of as the elixir of life) but it was a good choice to make once.  ONCE.  Now I know.  AND, I've discovered the empty bottle and presentation box is worth $15 on E-bay (and I was going to take it to the trash).

For budget bourbon I like Benchmark. It comes in a plastic bottle but is excellent for the price. It's $21 for a 1.75L here.

For something a little higher up I'm a fan of Four Roses. It's $40 for 1.75L.

So people like me can buy it and fill it with Canadian Hunter and see who notices :)

Just kidding. I'd only do this if I found the bottle for free.

I'm partial to Bulleit. WalMart sells 1.75 L for $45. Nah it's not particularly mustachian to drink much at all. I tell myself I've just been drinking more lately because of the never ending remodel project :)

Old Crow.

It's on the bottom shelf, in a plastic bottle.  About $12.

It tastes like Turpentine mixed with used battery acid.

But did I mention it's only $12?

And in the end, it will get you to the same place as a $100 bottle...

Bourbon is very Mustachian, even good bourbon, if you just compare it to Scotch.

I bought a few bottles of that A.H. Hirsch 16 year old bourbon  for $75 each a few years back.

Last year I sold one for $1400.  (I think they're around $3000 now!)  It's a great whiskey, but my go-to for sipping is that Knob Creek 9 year old.

Whatever is cheapest for cooking.
Jim Bean for mixing.

Mid-to-top-shelf for the rest. Right now I'm on a bottle of 10 years Russell's.

Love W. L. Weller, I think it's plenty good enough for me. I got my hands on the 12 year once too for $25 and just enjoyed it instead of selling it. The typical 7 Weller year you can find is plenty tasty too and is what I usually buy.

I'll one up you...my go-to is VOB (very old bartons). $10.59 after tax. bottom shelf...but it is in a glass bottle at least...most of the time

I know we're talking about bourbon, but when it's bottom shelf does it really matter? I get the Canadian Hunter I mentioned previously for $7 in glass bottles. It's far from the worst whisky I've ever had and I like the label. None of that "this fine whisky is from the oldest distillery in whatsit founded by the father of so and so..."

It says "Canadian Whisky-A Blend". Now look at this manly Canadian with a gun and his huskies.

Low end -> Buffalo Trace, Old Charter, Old Granddad
Middle -> Maker's 46, Knob Creek, Eagle Rare
High end -> Four Roses Barrel Strength, John Bowman

I usually go for the best Buffalo Trace distilling bourbon I can find.

Lately that has been Weller Special Reserve (~7 years) or Eagle Rare (~10 years).  I used to be able to find Weller 12 regularly but not any more.  I have one bottle I saved for special occasions.

All of these can be had for less than $30 for 750ml and are great stuff.

I like Rye even more than Bourbon.  My usual is Bulleit, but I was given a bottle of Whistle Pig for my birthday. Delicious!

I'm still fairly new to the bourbon scene.  Jim Beam is my favorite inexpensive brand.  Haven't had a ton of higher end stuff.  Cedar Ridge is good, not sure how available it is nationwide though.

+1 to Buffalo Trace. I think it's in the exact sweet spot for price and quality. My girlfriend and I did a double blind taste test of 3 bourbons we ended up having on hand. Buffalo Trace was the clear winner, and also the cheapest.

My favorite for bourbon is Wild Turkey 101.  Usually around $20 for a 750ml where I live. I honestly haven't found the taste of higher end bourbons to outweigh the price difference.

Knob Creek is our "expensive" bourbon.  The "house bourbon" here is Evan Williams.

I mostly drink beer nowadays, but I do enjoy a good bourbon from time to time.

When I have one with dad, it's his usual (Jim Beam Black, like Chris22 said it's amazingly good for the price). Otherwise, I'm fond of Michter's or Woodford Reserve.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
