Visit Norway; Advice please
« on: February 16, 2016, 04:42:18 AM »
My wife and I are thinking of visiting Norway between about May and Sept this year, concentrating on the southern fjord country. Is it a good idea to see the fjord country just from a cruise ship, or should we hire a car now and then? I find travel websites for Norway confusing.

I am thinking of taking a Hurtigruten coastal ship from Bergen to Alesund, get off and see the sights, then take a southbound Hurtigruten which I understand will allow us to see sights which were at night on the north bound leg. Hurtigruten is expensive, although I know that the price includes food and board.

Thank you in advance.

Norway is incredibly expensive, particularly for alcohol, so my advice would be to give up drinking while you're there. That said, because the kroner is effectively a petro-currency, now is quite a good time to visit.

The Hurtigruten is a great way to see the fjords, but there is quite a lot worth seeing away from the coast. You could perhaps take one of the way "Norway in a nutshell" type tours that takes in Bergen, Flam, Voss etc. as an alternative to hiring a car?

Thank you ceratonia for your reply. I imagine the hard drinking Vikings would be looking down aghast from Valhalla at the expensive booze in Norway. I had better bring in a suitcase of booze.
