Vegetarian Restaurants in DC?
« on: October 09, 2013, 06:40:18 AM »
Just found out that I will be in DC for 3 days later this month.  I'll be staying in the vicinity of Dupont Circle.  I'd like recommendations for reasonably priced, high quality vegetarian restaurants, pizza places, and coffee shops. Also, are there any independently owned movie theaters or bookstores nearby?

Thanks a lot!

For pizza... hit Jumbo Slice in Adams Morgan :)  Not sure I'd call it high quality though...

Check out Happy Cow.  You can find veggie restaurants by city/location.  It's a great resource.  Enjoy DC--there are lots of vegetarian restaurants there.

Yes, thanks, rk, I will do that.  I was also hoping to hear from some locals who might be able to share their recommendations.

Kramer books in dupont is a bookstore/cafe/bar that is independently owned, as is politics and prose a ways NW of Dupont. E st cinema (metro center) and Silver theater (silver spring) do fun movie events all the time, but I'm not sure about "independently owned".

Amsterdam Falafel in Adams morgan is great, sweetgreen is a local salad chain, 2 amys is an amazing pizza place, district taco has vegetarian options (those are reasonably priced, at least for DC). Yelp is incredibly active in this city, so that in conjunction with happy cow will do the trick. If you want upscale, Zatinya (greek tapas), Restaurant Nora (all organic restaurant), Rasika (upscale indian) are verrrrryyyyyy tasty, but super expensive (but if this is a work trip with reimbursements, go for it).

+1 on Amsterdam and it is open late so you can go there whenever, make sure and jam as many toppings in as possible.  My two fav veg places in the city (Soul Veg and Java Green) are both closed now unfortunately.  DC has amazing Ethiopian food which can be vegetarian if you want, there are so many places that I can't say which is best but Dahlak was good.  Ethiopian is hard to find in other cities so I really recommend trying it if you haven't.  Himalayan Heritage (Nepalese) was also really good to and there is a Teaism in Dupont now (they had a tastey Seitan dish I used to love).  Check out vegdc.com for more

Thanks very much for these ideas, so far!

Keep them coming, Washingtonians!

I think I may have to start fasting now, in preparation for eating all this great food in our nation's capitol.

Thanks in advance.

Founding Farmers - not a "vegetarian restaurant" but has excellent veg and vegan options.  Farm to table concept.

Two Amy's Pizza is near the National Cathedral. Although not exactly close to Dupont, it's good.

Vapiano's also has pizza and they have a location just off Dupont.

Busboys and Poets at 5th and K has a lot of vegan and veggie options.

You'll like Kramerbooks and Afterwords. I think the restaurant side of it is what keeps it in business. Starbuck's has cleaned out most of the indie coffeeshops. There's Tryst over in Adams Morgan (walkable from Dupont).

If you end up in Adams Morgan, you must visit Amsterdam Falafel. It's a bit gritty but gooood.

Second Story Used Bookstore (it's on the first floor) is just off of Dupont Circle on P Street. There used to be another used bookstore just up Connecticut (a block past Kramerbooks on the other side of the street), but I'm not sure if it's still there.

Just across from Second Story is Pizzeria Paradiso, which has really good pizza (not exactly cheap) with lots of veggie options. Also, their beer selection is terrific. For coffee, Dolcezza (sic?), on Connecticut about a block NW of the Circle has very good espresso drinks (but not cheap either). You might be interested in Teaism, a funky place that does breakfast items, sandwiches and tea in the same vicinity, just off of Connecticut (I now see amicableskeptic recommended that too - he/she has good ideas as well).

For something more interesting, you might try Malaysian Kopitian a few blocks south of the Circle on M St. They have lots of Malaysian veggie options and it's less expensive than most Dupont Circle area restaurants. If you're into Spanish tapas, Boqueria, on M St. has good veggie options.

Perspective I guess.  Veg options are 10-16.  For eating out in DC, this seems reasonable to me.

Ah. My problem is I ordered a meat dish at dinner. I wasn't paying, but I recalled the whole shebang as pricey. I see your point.

I'm a DC vegetarian and I like many of the options that have been listed here. Two Amy's is my favorite for pizza, as others have said, there are many great Ethiopian places. Amsterdam Falafel may be the most Mustachian option as it is inexpensive.

I will add that Pho 14 (which has various locations in walkable/transit accessible locations) has a very tasty vegetarian pho. I particularly appreciate that as vegetarian pho can sometimes be hard to find. Also, Red Rocks pizza is Neopolitan-style like Two Amys but they have some cheaper options during happy hour which goes until 6:30 pm on weekdays. At Busboys and Poets, the Vegetarian BLT is fantastic as is the apple gorgonzola sandwich.

For dessert, Sticky Fingers is a great vegan bakery in Columbia Heights. They also serve food but I don't have as much experience with that. They won Cupcake Wars (is that the right name? It's a Food network show) not once but twice and they were competing with bakeries that used dairy and eggs.

Sadly, many of the vegetarian-only restaurants I used to visit in DC proper have closed. There are some excellent vegetarian restaurant in the Maryland and Virginia suburbs which drives me nuts because 1) I don't own a car, 2) I'm a city snob and don't like to schlep out the the burbs. Examples include but are not limited to Sunflower Vegetarian Restaurant (largely Asian food) and Woodlands Restaurant (Indian).

These all seem like great ideas.  Thanks so much!

We will not have a car.  We will either be on foot or be using public transportation.  We will be able to eat dinner Thursday night and Friday night, and maybe lunch and dinner on Saturday.

Thanks again!

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
