Question:

Q believes that Trump knew that the Democrats were going to cheat so he put a UV "watermark" on all the ballots to prevent the Democrats from sneaking in new, fraudulent, ones. (Like the ones brought in by ship from North Korea.)

The AZ recount is/was using UV lights to determine if the ballots were real.

What goes through their minds when NONE of the ballots have any UV "watermark"? Do they think, "Ok, maybe that wasn't true." Or do they double down, "Holy shit! The entire AZ election was fraudulent...all the votes cast were replaced by the Democrats!!1111!"

I'm leaning towards the latter.

Yeah, I read that as “yep, they’re going to try to throw out the entire election.” If I won a down-ballot race in AZ, I would be raising hell right now.

I vote in Arizona. The election filled two pages of small print. A hundred races and a dozen propositions. Of course the narrative pretends the presidential election can be physically separated from the rest of them.

I'm missing the Trump outrages of the day now that I'm seeing the Biden outrages of massive spending bills he's pushing.  So much for him being a moderate.  He's been taken over by the Bernie Sanders/AOC socialist wing.  Very disappointing because I voted for him.  I support some of the spending, but not most of it.  Hopefully the true moderates can stop most of the unnecessary spending.

Here;s the thing - while the overall, headline dollar amounts are huge, the policies themselves aren’t abnormally progressive or socialist or whatever terms you hear tossed around. We’ve known for decades that we’ve been underinvesting in infrastructure by tens of billions, to the point where we aren’t even in the top ten globally. Covid has finally laid bare how bad our internet connectivity is. And in a similar manner it’s shown how piecemeal our childcare system is.  None of these are left-lurching, earth shattering programs.  WHen talking with my friends from overseas it’s genuinely difficult for them to see this as anything but a center-right series of programs.

Noticeably absent from the (as you call it) “Bernie Sanders/AOC socialist wing” are things like UBI, Universal Healthcare, Massive (or any) cuts to the military, etc.

Agree 100%. The line that he's being controlled by "socialists" is pretty much a straight Fox News/OAN propaganda line. Anything Biden does will be painted with that brush as a tool to rally votes against all Democrats in the 2022 mid-terms and against Biden himself in 2024. If I've seen one thing made abundantly clear over the past few years its that there is no low that is too low for the Carlson, Hannity, etc. crowd and no hypocrisy too big or too outrageous for many Republican politicians.

Biden's policies seem pretty centrist to me.  While I'd love to see the US actually start to take a more left wing course, it seems very unlikely under Biden as president.  It's weird to me how many people think the status quo in the US remotely resembles 'centrism' when the whole country is so far to the right of average.

@American GenX , can you start a "Biden outrage of the week" thread, this post is Trump-adjacent, not truly Trump-related.

Exactly.  American "left"  is everyone else's (moderate) right.  For comparison, go look at the highlights of the latest Canadian budget, proposed by a basically centrist Canadian minority government depending on a moderately left-wing party for survival.

When I try to explain this to people, I get looked at like I have an arm growing out of my head.  Everything in the US has been shifting to the right over the last few decades.  To the point where those labeled "ultra liberal" are centrists, or just left of center.

That said, I think we will start to see a shift back toward the left...assuming Trumpism cancer doesn't keep spreading.  It's pretty easy to defeat that though; critical thinking/analysis and check your sources.  But that's asking a lot of the average American.

No... he has hardly been taken over by the "socialist wing." A true socialist would say Biden's infrastructure plan doesn't go nearly far enough. Most of the spending is on basic infrastructure and social services that we've neglected over the past few decades.

What's funny is that government spending really ballooned under Trump, but the right-wing outrage machine tries to paint Biden as the socialist. Trump oversaw some of the largest government stimulus and redistribution of wealth in US history- the Covid relief bills. CARES was almost 3x the size of Obama's Recovery Act, and provided direct relief to targeted industries and cash payments to individuals. But that's ok I guess- apparently it only becomes socialist when a Democrat does it.

(OP here)
I think measured objectively, Biden is proposing large programs and a substantial increase in the role of government. Some people (in my view this is mistaken) would consider any expansion of government socialism, so you'll probably continue to hear the word a lot through the next few years. I don't necessarily think that not constituting socialism is sufficient for a policy being sound, either.

During 2009-2012, conservatives successfully rebuilt the Republican party to oppose Obama by rallying around the idea that TARP, ARRA, and the Affordable Care act were "Socialism". They won a lot of elections this way. At the time, I don't know whether Vice President Biden was a force for moderation or a force pulling that administration toward greater interventions. But in winning power, the Tea Party's best federal policy achievement was the House passing the American Health Care Act in 2017. It feels like the conservative movement could be offering genuine policy solutions, yet they aren't.

I'm seeing that here too.  I can remember our previous Progressive Conservative Party having real policy.  Our present Conservative Party doesn't have much real policy, it is just against what everyone else proposes.  Its actual real social policy is so regressive they don't tend to talk about it much.

Are your Conservatives conservative by that definition?  Not from here they aren't.

No, ours don't like things the way they are.  They want to go back to the 50's.   When no-one used "white male" and "privilege" in the same sentence. When women and POC "knew their place" and and LGBTQ were so deep in the closet they were half way to Narnia.  When abortions were publicly unheard of.  When divorce was shameful. When you were Roman Catholic in Quebec (and Jewish children went to the Protestant schools because that was where everyone who wasn't Catholic went) and Protestant in ROC.

I grew up in the 50's and wouldn't wish them back for anything.

Indeed greater than any single daily outrage is Trump's exposing of the conservative movement as one wholly dedicated to winning and perpetuating power, without any tangible use of that power apart from maintaining power.

Don't believe me? Check out how easily and quickly Republican-controlled states are restricting voting during the first few months of this year.

I've very keen to see how these new laws hold up under the courts.  On one hand, most are packed with conservative judges.  OTOH, even these have shown little tolerance to upholding such laws.

Maybe I'm cynical, but the conservative movement is very good at deploying judges and very good at passing laws to restrict voting access.

This was a really good read on the Texas Republican party about the war between the 'old-school' establishment conservatives and the grassroots Trump Republicans in state politics.

There are ethics complaints against him which may get him disbarred.  But he'll still be rich and have supporters as long as there are people supporting Trump, so it's not really justice.  Possibly a judge could put him in prison for contempt of court if he lied under oath or led someone else to.

While I am opposed to Cheney on pretty much any policy position, I do respect her principled stand on Trump and the events of Jan 6th. How the GOP is handling her is pretty disgraceful. The subtext, of course, is that Trump and his minions still have disproportionate sway in the primary process and the current office holders see that they will be primaried and thrown out of office if their loyalty is anything but absolute. It is all the problems with a 2 party plus primary system in one tidy package.

Same here...when your party is protecting people like Matt Gaetz and Marjorie Taylor Greene, while punishing Liz Cheney for having the sheer audacity to say that the election was free and fair...I think you've got issues. I understand that many Republicans still bowing to Trump is purely because they need his base...it's still stunning to me at times how much they power they give him when many of his classic means of retaliation (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) have been taken away from him. At what point do they say "you know what, fuck that guy" and just try to govern again?

You have to have ideas, a real platform and message. The TEA party rose to power as essentially the anti Obama movement (“we are the party of HELL no!”). Since then they have passed a corporate tax cut and... not much else. The GOP of Reagan or the Bushes had a world view and overall philosophy about how the US government should work. Now ... I’m at a loss to describe what they stand for.  About all I can say is what they don’t stand for. And that isn’t sustainable for a party.

I'm leaning towards the latter.

The only reason they're doing this recount is because they have the preconceived notion that it's true. Georgia had three recounts and their legislature still believes it was rigged.

I’m skeptical they actually believe it themselves.  Sure, they go on TV and make outrageous statements at rallies, but look at their actions - they are just going through the motions with regard to recounts.

And trying to get their own people unelected who aren't towing this particular line.  Whether they believe it or not is becoming irrelevant. They're taking actions that say they do and staking the next election on it.  Someone was screaming on Fox News for an hour yesterday that Liz Cheney should be kicked out of Congress for a) believing 6 Jan was a bad thing, b) believing the election was fair, and c) having the audacity to be polite to Biden.  McCarthy is plotting to remove her from her committees while cheering lunatics like Greene.  Any Republican who isn't continuing to bow before the altar of Trump has a target on their backs for the next primary.

Others have written that the big election lie is a parallel to the lie told in Germany about the end of WWI that they had been betrayed and that the betrayal was the real reason that they lost the war and endured all that came of the defeat. This lie was exploited by the Nazis as they rose to power. It feels like the current GOP is just seeing the short term gains of the lie, but I wonder about how this will unfold over the coming election cycles given the parallel attempts to restrict voting. The future is always uncertain, but the fraction of our society that is more concerned with their tribe than democracy is unsettling.

I think they ostensibly stand for heterosexual Christians of European descent who like to tell others what to do, but not have others tell them what to do. Oh and also tax cuts. Honestly, it's really just tax cuts. The rest is to get poor people to agree to tax cuts for the rich.

Read an interesting blurb this morning stating that all this bluster about the Big Lie could actually undermine Republican candidates in the mid-terms. I'm curious to see how all the massive voter suppression tactics impact voting...as I don't believe it will end up working out for them the way they think it will. They're doubling down on "Trump is god" rhetoric and further alienating any moderates, independents, or "traditional" Republicans. So while they continue to bow and scrape to Cheeto Jesus (thanks Meghan McCain) they're essentially ensuring that they won't gain any ground in the mid-terms and potentially killing any hopes for recapturing the White House should Trump decide to run again in 24.

Both of the following can be true:

  • You are not among the wealthy, but your tax burden went down because of TCJA.
  • TCJA represents a missed opportunity to bring true reform to our system, which would require: pruning the tax code of a lot of distortionary items, including the mortgage interest deduction; re-aligning the system to incentivize businesses to invest domestically; and increasing enforcement, particularly among wealthier taxpayers.

I wish this were true...I'd like to think there will be some consequences but I am skeptical of this theory.  Maybe?  They did lose a lot of independents and some moderate republicans in the presidential election.

The biggest of which is the charity deduction. That more or less needs to go away, but not a single GOP member would touch that for fear of their evangelical constituents and a lot Dems also wouldn't touch that. Same thing for continuing to let churches be recognized as 501c3 orgs even if they don't actually perform any charitable good to the greater community. All charities need to come under stricter scrutiny and guidelines to be tax exempt.

Following Trump’s normal pattern of accusing others of doing the very thing he himself is guilty of...

Y’all remember how Trump spent the first year of his presidency accusing the Obama administration of ordering the JOD to spy on him and get the phone and email records coming from his office in Trump Tower?  Turns out while he was making these accusations he had directed the JOD to secretly obtain the phone records and emails of at least three journalists for the Washington Post.

I think it’s a deliberate guiding principle (probably learned from Roy Cohn).

Re: The Arizona recount

The UV watermarked ballots were a bust so they've moved on to the next conspiracy. This time, it's bamboo ballots. Yes, they believe that China flew in 40,000 ballots marked for Biden and they're using a camera to look for bamboo fibers (because China means panda bears means bamboo!).

This is different from the other SE Asian ballots fraudulently used (those were shipped from North Korea).

Some of the cultists truly believe that Trump won with a significant plurality (~100M). It's unfathomable to them that everyone, even minorities that he insulted, didn't vote for the guy.

There are some interesting parallels with the “end of the world”ers here.  Everytime there’s a definitive date when the world will end (based on some weird interpretation of scripture, or calculations, or whatever), and it doesn’t come to pass, the reasons why get even more absurd.  Turned out we were using the wrong calendar for the last three millennia! We forgot to account for gravitational pull of Mars!  A secret society has been working hard to shift things, but they’ve only delayed the inevitable.

I’m visiting with my in-law later today - she is very deep down that rabbit hole.  EVery visit it’s a mixture of frustration and befuddlement. I won’t what’s she will say this time...

How stupid!

Because China knows they are under scrutiny and have outsourced the job to Iran. They should look for clay tablets mixed in!!

Good point. Clay tablets are easy to spot, too, since they're so hard to fold into the mail-in envelopes.

I really wrestle with myself about these election conspiracy theories, because I remember what it was like in early 2017, still befuddled that Donald Trump really had won. The Russian disinformation thing seemed like it could have made a difference. I'm trying to understand why the believers of this "Big Lie" are intellectually different from where I was four years ago, especially with the anniversary of the Comey firing over the weekend, followed immediately by that meeting with Kislyiak (washington post article: https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/trump-revealed-highly-classified-information-to-russian-foreign-minister-and-ambassador/2017/05/15/530c172a-3960-11e7-9e48-c4f199710b69_story.html ).

Listening to NPR this morning they shared a rather sobering statistic:  Something like 70% of self-identified Republicans currently believe that Trump won the 2020 election. Some back-of-the-napkin math shows that's roughly a quarter of the total electorate.

The "conservative" misinformation machine is effectively doing it's job. The Tucker Carlsons and Sean Hannitys of the world spend every single day feeding these people the misinformation that they need to keep the Big Lie going. Stupidity and gullibility apparently know no bounds.

Dont feel to bad, you had a lot of company. 66% of democrats believed Russia changed vote tallies.

The "liberal" misinformation machine is effectively doing its job. The MSNBC, CNN, Wahsington Post, NPR, NYtimes of the world spend days feeding people misinformation that they need to keep the russian collusion/dossier hoax going. People often believe what they want to.

Really?  I don't remember seeing anything from the main stream media in 2016/17 about changing vote tallies, it was all about adverts for Trump on Facebook paid for in Russian roubles, Trump campaign people having meetings with Russians, and so on.  Which I understand is fact not misinformation.

I'm confused by this comment.

The 66% of democrats surveyed in that poll are obviously misguided.  There's no evidence that Russia changed ballots . . . but you seem to be implying that they have been mislead by "MSNBC, CNN, Wahsington Post, NPR, NYtimes".  Can you provide the articles that you're referring to which told people that Russia changed ballots?

As far as Russian interference, there's no hoax going on at all.  The Mueller report concluded that the Russian government "interfered in the 2016 presidential election in sweeping and systematic fashion" and "violated U.S. criminal law".  It should still seem like Russian disinformation played a role in Trump's election because that's what the evidence says happened.  You can certainly argue your view about how important this "sweeping and systematic" election interference was . . . but it's simply denying reality to argue it didn't happen.
