Travel shows
« on: July 03, 2021, 04:51:35 PM »
My wife and I love travel shows--and we love to travel. For years we would always watch one of Anthony Bourdain's shows (No Reservations, Parts Unknown) on Saturday night after dinner. We miss him a great deal. We have also watched nearly all of the Rick Steves' Europe episodes--some multiple times. Last week we tried "Somebody Please Feed Phil" Ireland Episode. It was pretty good, but--hate to say it--I find Phil kind of uninspiring!

We have also been rooting around YouTube. We found this great one on the Azores. The drone footage--and land footage are spectacular, but unfortunately, this guy says nothing about the food and almost nothing about wine. Nevertheless a great video and very much worth watching: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-z7_Dq_aGoA&t=11s

We are interested in all types of destinations. Any suggestions!?

Thanks.

I don't have any suggestions but thanks for the link to the Azores video. We were supposed to go last summer and of course it got cancelled. I'm enjoying immensely.

Love Anthony Bourdain. So heart broken over his death.

We’ve been watching the amazing race lately to get our travel fix since we can’t go in person right now. We’ve exhausted any other travel shows so I’ll be watching this thread for recommendations. And will check out your suggestion.

But, a couple shows we’ve enjoyed that are at least travel related are Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat and surprisingly Down to Earth with Zach Efron.

My spouse and I love travel and food. We really enjoyed the Street Food series on Netflix, particularly Latin America, as well as the Taco Chronicles. We are spending our first year of retirement in Mexico and are going down the various taco styles, one bite at the time.

As for the Feed Phil series, I was also very disappointed. I felt the show was very superficial and more focused on Phil than on the places he visits, the people, and the food.

WOW!!! We were digging around on YouTube tonight and found this. You have to see this one on the Trans-Siberian Express.
Absolutely mind-blowing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUINpw6CFTw

My wife and I were in St. Petersburg and surroundings (Tsarskoe-Selo, Veliky Novgorod) for two weeeks in 2007 and it was probably the greatest trip we've ever taken. I read In Siberia by Colin Thubron a couple of times because I have an interest in this area, but actually seeing some of it in this video is beyond expectations!

I am not sure how much this journey costs. I think I heard that a privat berth on the regular Trans-Siberian Railway costs about 20K$. I am guessing this would be at least twice the price.

I loved Stanley Tucci's series on food in various Italian regions. Can't recall where I found it.

Joanna Lumley's Trans-Siberian Railway series on BBC was excellent.

Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman, Long way round & Long way down. I sat next to Charlie Boorman on a long haul flight about 10 years ago. Interesting guy.

I too really enjoyed that show too. It’s called ‘Searching for Italy’. Reruns can be seen on CNN, and at least a couple months ago it was available on Hulu.

Any of the various travel shows that Michael Palin has done for BBC over the years is well worth watching.

The Long Way series is great, though it's a shame the video quality of the first two trips is not great. I'd recommend you give Bizarre Foods a chance if you haven't. The premise is gimmicky, but the host is thoughtful and knowledgable. The "bizarre" thing tends to only be a small part of each episode. And while not a travel show exactly, High on the Hog on Netflix was nicely done.

I do so miss Anthony Bourdain.  I also used to watch a lot of Alby Mangels when Travel channel was airing his show.

I watch quite a lot of travel content on Youtube, and there are lot of good channels there.  You may or may not like the vlog format, but if you liked Anthony Bourdain there's a good chance you will.  A few that come to mind right off are Indigo Traveller, Migrationology, PPPeter's Africa videos, Samuel and Audrey, and Lost LeBlanc, but there are way more than that, each with a different feel.

Also, are you learning a foreign language?  If so, there's plenty of travel content in other major world languages, and it's a great opportunity to get listening practice while keeping you interested.  A lot of my favorites are in Spanish.

Hah, I really liked Somebody Feed Phil precisely because I find him relatable.

I recommend the Supersizer's Go and the Supersizer's Eat.  It's similar to a travelogue but focused on the past, they "travel" to different time periods in English history and try out the food and activities.

Russell Howard Stands Up to the World: British comedian visits New Zealand and Australia and does standup.  Post COVID, so quite a few references to that.  But he''s hilarious and the people he meets are interesting.  (I watched it on his Youtube channel, he has the full episodes up.)

Long way round & Long way down

Apparently there's a third one in this series.  Long Way Up.

It's not for everyone, but I enjoy Travel Man with Richard Ayoade. His genuine dislike of traveling is sometimes fun, sometimes tiring. There is now a new host (Joe Lycett), but I haven't seen any of his episodes.

For France, I highly recommend watching the Tour de France each year.  (Just not with the US commentators go for international English)

The guy from "The IT Crowd"? I'll have to check it out.

I loved No Reservations and Parts Unknown. Anthony Bourdain was such a treasure. His death was like a kick in the gut.

I'd forgotten about that. I think it's on Apple TV, right? I'll have to sign up and watch that and Ted Lasso.

I watch a lot of travel related content on youtube. I'm a huge fan of Yes Theory, Eva zu Beck, pppeter and to a slightly lesser extent bald and bankrupt and Alina Mcleod.

In particular I would suggest watching Yes Theory: 96 Hours Inside Afghanistan in 2020.

There's quite a few more than that:

Best Ever Food Review Show
Indigo Traveller
The Tim Traveller (dry British humour)
Samuel and Audrey
Lost LeBlanc
Vagabrothers
Migrationology/Mark Abroad
The Food Ranger
Kara and Nate
Iz Harris
Johnny Harris
Worst Places to Be A Pilot
Anton Somewhere - dubbed from Anton Ptushkin
Wode Maya
Travellight
Living Bobby
The New Travel
Flying the Nest
Gareth Leonard
Luke Martin
Geography Now
Drew Binsky
Rare Earth
The Life of Jord
Jacob Laukaitis
Fun for Louis
Hey Nadine
Ricky Seaman
My Name Is Andong
Davids Been Here
Gabriel Traveler
Karl Watson
FinnSnow
Monkey Abroad
Peter Santenello
PsychoTraveller
The Traveling Clatt
Planet Doc
Divert Living
Jumping Places
Peregrination
Damon and Jo

If you want to learn Spanish there are several good ones too:
Enrique Alex
Luisito Comunica
Jorge De León
Un Mundo Inmenso
alanxelmundo
Alex Tienda - North Korea series is really good
Mariel de Viaje
Gabriel Herrera
Cristian Corom
Coreano Vlogs

Russian:
Орел и Решка (Orel i Reshka) - Would recommend.  Show where they flip a coin to see who gets to travel lavishly and who has to budget.  English subtitles available for a lot of the episode.
Антон Птушкин (Anton Ptushkin) - Pretty good.  English dubbed version is Anton everywhere

You'll probably have to dig back to pre-2020 content for most of these since the pandemic has made it harder to make good stuff.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
