All I can say is that health care is one of the main reasons I never moved back to the US. I was very sick about 9 years ago so I have a major pre-existing condition. The Italian health care system is not perfect but when I was very sick it was there for me and I got excellent treatment that did not bankrupt me. We are both getting older and I can't imagine going back to a system where a major health issue could jeopardize my finances.
Here in Italy, emergency health care is free - even to people who are not resident here (like tourists). I was in the ER a few years ago and there was an American tourist there who had fallen over and broken her nose in a restaurant. Since the doctor didn't really speak English, I stepped in the translate. The doctor was amazed as the woman was more stressed out about how she was going to pay for her treatment at the hospital than about the pain she was in. He kept saying (and I kept translating) that emergency healthcare is free in Italy so it will cost $0 but she just didn't believe it. Crazy.
