Things your ____ does
« on: October 22, 2014, 11:54:01 AM »
My mom prints articles from websites, puts them in a mailing envelope, and sends them to me.  Just send me the link in an email Mom!  Ink, paper, postage, envelope, fuel, time, ahhhhhh!

Had to steal this from the Overheard on Facebook thread.  Anyone else have a story like this about a mom/dad/grandparent/anyone?  I need more stories like this, please.

(hope this isn't bad etiquette to VirginiaBob...)

My grandfather uses email, but he uses it at least twice a week to send everyone in the family photos of the major exciting events in his rural NY town: road work, tractor shows, installing a new vent on the side of his house, more road work. And it's not just one photo of each thing. We usually get 5-6 slightly different views of whatever piece of construction equipment caught his interest.

After my grandfather died, we found in his home office a printed and filed paper copy of every email I had ever sent him.

I absolutely love this and if there's a place to sign up to be on the email list, I would probably sign up for it.

My mom tries to explain to people how to use the Google.  She's so cute, she thinks they don't know about it.

That is so sweet.

My grandmother (God rest her soul) used to put $5 in my birthday cards, even when I was in my 40's. It was really sweet!

My grandfather spent lots of his working life overseas in the 60s and 70s when communication with people stateside was EXPENSIVE. He retired well before I was born, but lived across the country, so phone and letters were our main form of interaction. When I'd call to talk, he'd always keep the conversation super short even though the conversation wasn't costing anything. It was a real shame, actually. He was a fascinating man with amazing stories. Crazy mustachian too... He'd think most of us on this site were way too soft. Childhood in the depression will do that.

My Mom just turned 50, young enough to be somewhat tech savvy... She always has the newest phone but still carries a little address book with her that has everyone's name, number, and address in it because she does not know how to input the info into her phone.

Oh my gosh, this suddenly makes so much sense!  My grandpa is the same way, which is odd because he's very talkative in person.  He lived part time across the pond for about 20 years, but even now in the US he doesn't like to chat on the phone.

OMG, my grandmother did this also.  She had 21 grandchildren and she didn't have much money, but she sent $5 in a birthday card to each one.  However, she didn't try to buy Christmas presents for them.  I will always remember those cards.

Hey! watch it there sonny! lol

I'm way over 50 and my super hot wife just turned 50.  Just because we remember how to take directions and follow a map doesn't mean we aren't tech savvy.   I have no one's address in my phone because every phone I've owned eventually goes away.

You could always be a dear and show her how to use her phone.  Or even better enter every number, address and birthday from her little book into the phone for her!

"Somewhat tech savvy,"  burns my britches!  lol

Yeesh - talk about agism.  I was a lot more tech savvy than many of my students, just a little more than a 40 year age gap there.  These young whipper-snappers think they know it all.

Phones come and go, but a good Word document (or Excel spreadsheet) with everyone's info lasts forever.

My mom is in her 50's and prints everything she finds online.  I got married this year:  pretty flower bouquets? print 8 color pages of ideas.  Options for reception venue?  Print 5 pages with address, pics, and map.  Cool event on facebook?  Print the group page and stick it on the desk, then remember to show it to me when I go over to their house. She generates an insane amount of wasted paper.

This spring I taught her how to copy and paste a picture/map from a website (especially Google image search/maps) to Word to then resize and print.  Before that she would print tiny thumbnail images/maps that show up on webpages then get frustrated when the printed out the "wrong" size.
