Things You Miss from the Trump Era
« on: December 23, 2022, 01:47:27 PM »
I know there's probably not too much to miss, but in preparation for filing my 2022 taxes here are a couple items I miss:
  • Advanced Child Tax Credit
  • Charitable deduction in addition to standard deduction

  • Advanced Child Tax Credit

This one occurred entirely during the Biden administration.

This one lasted two years, only one of which was during the Trump administration.

An easy way to know if a US political desicion is bad. Now you actually have to read more than the headline saying "Trump says X is bad/good".

The stock market going up and up.  I’m surprised it recovered to a new high after the shutdowns.  Why the hell isn’t it inflating with the rest of inflation going on?

US net energy efficiency.

What does this one mean?

If it's about crude oil, the US has only been a petro products net exporter in two years, 2020 and 2021.

https://www.eia.gov/energyexplained/oil-and-petroleum-products/imports-and-exports.php

Quote
In 2021, the United States exported about 8.54 million barrels per day (b/d) and imported about 8.47 million b/d of petroleum,1 making the United States an annual total petroleum net exporter for the second year in a row since at least 1949.

There's a lot of things I miss. Here's a just a couple that come to mind:

I miss not waking up wondering 'what is the dum**** in the WH going to do today?' or 'Is the president going to put me out of business today?' (My company sells a lot of product to China). These were completely new emotions for me and I miss the insecurity they wrought.

Speaking of insecurity; I miss the people I respected and looked up to looking on in shock and horror at the machinations of our government. When I traveled overseas on business I miss complete strangers judging me based on the actions and policies our administration was enforcing.

I miss covid denial-ism from the president. I miss vaccine denial-ism from the president. I miss just about everything from our previous president.

I didn't think about a coup much, really, until the last month of the 45th President's administration.  Now I must confess I miss not having to worry about him being president for life.

I do miss wondering what depredations will be in the days' news and contemplating how much further we can debase ourselves as a nation.

I now have a completely different set of worries! The problems of those times now seem so far away, so distant and so meaningless today. Although, when I get nostalgic, I read some of the report of the Jan. 6th Committee, or the two impeachment proceedings (talk about achievement! Nobody's ever been acquitted in the Senate TWICE!) and it brings smiles as I remember the good old days, the Trump Era.

I miss Trump the same way I miss an abusive ex.

He was horrible, abusive, threatening, and emotionally immature and angry - but he was also exciting, funny, dramatic, and unpredictable.

I miss the excitement. The comedy sketches, the absurd things he said...*sigh* Everyday was a new day.

The new guy is boring, bland, predictable, and doesn't own a motorcycle I can ride on.

I hate to say this but a small part of me wants Trump back.

It's also the same part that wants to wrap my car around a telephone pole.

I miss the early days where I thought it was and amusing and self-destructive detour for the GOP to take because I was secure in my belief that Mitch McConnell wouldn't let anything too bad happen because McConnell cared about his own personal legacy and the long term prospects for his party. Obviously, I was mistaken.

I can't think of one thing he did that helped me personally.   It didn't hurt me because I'm a middle aged white guy.  Things are definitely better under Biden.  I can't imagine how horrible of a recession we'd be in had Trump won in 2020.  Russia would hold ever inch of Ukraine and be knocking on NATO's door in Poland.  There would be daily riots and arrests of protesters by the Trump Special Police Force.  Books would be getting banned nationwide, not just in Florida. Handmaids Tale would no longer be fiction.

I get where you are coming from about the first two, but on the gasoline front we are in the “normal” range of real-adjusted price at the pump. I’m actually pretty disappointed that the National average didn’t remain above $4 for very long, as that accelerates transition. I’m pretty annoyed Biden caved to the politics and has been pushing so aggressively to get prices back down.

Inflation continues to drop. As a family we actually look like we will come out ahead, but that’s really upended a lot of peoples budgets and financial security.

War in Ukraine? Seems the most likely outcomes were war or a puppet Russian regime in Kyiv and Putin that much closer to realizing the previous soviet borders.

I kind of think $2.89 for gasoline is ridiculously low. We need the changes that higher gas prices drive.

It moved to thedonald.win. They even planned some of the Jan 6 activities there! (I reported their "take over the tunnels" plans and maps to the FBI, where it obviously went into a blackhole because angry white people wouldn't do something like that.)

That URL is now only a mystery download, which is probably malware. Fitting.

Haha, yeah. Every time a "Muslim" knifes another because that's what frustrated, war-scared young males sometimes do, it's all hell and how we must save ourselfs because they are all sooo bad aqnd gonna kill us out of malice...
And when a Neonazi (tries to) kill someone, especially if he is in the army or police, it's always a single gun nut (in Germany it's not normal to have dozens of guns and grenades) with psychological problems, and definitely not a group or even systemic problem.

Back then there was a certain clarity about how things were clearly getting worse minute-by-minute.

Now I can't tell if things are getting worse or better, and it's quite anxiety provoking not to know anything about the state of the world.

Well Trump might not be on the evening news but we have so many other happy souls to hear about - Marjorie Taylor Green, George Santos, Tucker Carlson, Matt Gaetz, Lauren Boebert, and all those happy people over at Fox.

They just fill me with joy when I see their happy faces spreading wisdom to the masses.... /S

I miss having regulations about transporting hazardous materials on trains through or near populated areas.

I also miss feeling like the government might slightly care about the lives and wellbeing of the citizens which it purports to govern.

Those regulations were repealed under the Trump administration. Not sure why they haven’t been put back in effect in the 2 years since.

I dunno, legacy and new age media seems to be doubling down on DeSantis a lot. They may end up electing him as they did with Donald J. Trump.
