The thread for the un-offendables
« on: September 19, 2015, 06:08:27 AM »
The number of locked threads and 'moderator' comments lately got me thinking that some of us need a thread where there is no danger of being censored or locked down. Maybe this experiment will fail. Won't bother me.

So, if you have ever complained to the mods because someone typed something that hurt your feelings, leave. Leave right now and never come back to this thread.

If you are the type that can't handle words that go against your beliefs and are compelled to lash out, stay. But if you find yourself starting to cry and feel bad, go away. We don't want your kind.

And related to a recent post: if you actually are a terrorist, go kill yourself for practice somewhere where no one else will get hurt.

A note to the mods: if this thread actually gets content (doubtful) and someone complains, please send them the text above and tell them they are an idiot.

-------

So if anyone wants to vent openly, or have some controversial conversation do it here.

Yeesh...  So a thread where the point is to say stuff that goes against the forum rules?

I think this would/will still be in danger of being locked down. Even if no one co plains, the mods are still obligated to uphold rules.  If this thread is breaking them, sooner or later a mod will find it and have to act.

I actually appreciate the moderator rules (very light rules, very gently applied) and am amazed at the nonsense some posters are putting the moderators through, so this will be my first/last visit to this thread.

So what is the goal of this thread? What problem is being solved?

Do you think the moderators are being unreasonable? Or do you think that overall good discussions are being shutdown due to readers not being able to look past an insignificant amount of posts that cross the line? Or do you think there should be no line?

For me, knowing the objective would help set the context or expectations for this thread.

I've never complained to any moderator.

But I think the quality of this forum is sadly going down hill. Too many people here are incapable of expressing an honest option, and then walking away. They have no better use for their time than to argue their point energetically and endlessly, with increasing vitriol.

The locked Kim Davis (KY anti-gay clerk) thread is one example.

The Health Insurance Alternative thread is another. In that one, the aggressive poster started off by making some very goods points about the potential downsides of Christian self insured health care groups.

I abandoned reading the thread (which ironically, is in the Welcome to the Forum section)  when the aggressive poster literally told the OP to stew in his own filth, among other insults.

I would welcome tighter moderation for posters like the one in the Health Insurance Alternative thread.

Yeah, the straight up insults are a problem for sure. The ones that bother me are the when people take things as insults when it was really not about them.

And there is no point to this thread, much like most threads. It is not to break the rules though.

I do think one moderator is occasionally being unreasonable. Not so much that it is a problem, just an interesting point to me as I see it.

Easily done.  It's called starting your own forum. :)

Otherwise, when in someone else's house, play by their rules.

There are gobs of such forums already out there. If someone wants a no-holds-barred, knock down / drag out, there're some doozies you can invite and link people to. But bring your knives and chains.

This is funny. I see the number of locked threads as a sign that some people here need to be less offensive. It didn't occur to me to interpret it as a need for a space on this forum where we can be as bigoted, racist, sexist, rude, etc. as anyone wants with no consequences.

I was drawn to join the MMM forum because I saw it as a peacable place to share constructive ideas; a rarity these days. I still view it as such. However, it actually saddens me to read unreasonable and unyielding exchanges from otherwise positive contributors.

I totally understand where you're coming from - in fact I feel the same way about those threads. But I don't let them ruin my enjoyment of the forum and neither should you - if it saddens you to read petty threads, just stay out of threads with titles like "Hussein Obama abortion-murders innocent baby Christians". (Of course the titles aren't usually that bad...)

You can almost always tell if posts will be contentious or enlightening before you click.
