The F'ing Weather
« on: April 15, 2018, 04:10:13 PM »
This weekend in southwestern Ontario, we are having an ice storm.  It looks like this outside (hopefully, photo will attach, but it is not showing up in "preview".  Suffice it to say that we've been experiencing a few days of freezing rain, sleet, snow, etc.).

Apparently, the gulf stream ocean currents are slowing because of climate change / melting glaciers and ice sheets in Greenland:  http://theconversation.com/climate-change-is-slowing-atlantic-currents-that-help-keep-europe-warm-94930

Having seen snow in the south of France a month ago, I know that Europe has been seeing this as well.

We've tried working out to boost endorphins, but it's not working, so it's time to switch to something else.  Ideas are welcome.  Medication?  Binge drinking?

I’m in Minnesota. We’ve had easily over a foot of snow since yesterday morning.

I know what you mean. I am in full-on “drink to forget” mode this weekend. Tomorrow I hope to rouse myself and go to the gym. But damn, this weather is hard on the morale.

I feel your pain @meghan88. I’m in Minnesota. Like Kris, I’m also drinking to forget what is going on outside. Plus obsessively checking the ten day forecast for comfort that it will eventually warm up the tiniest bit and, more importantly, stop f@$king snowing!

Another Ontarian here... it isn't just cold and snowy, it's alternating between sleet and snain, and the roads are treacherous.

Today it was board games to keep our minds off the absolutely terrible weather. We haven't talked so much about moving to Arizona in a long time as we have in the past week...

No you can't.  We are wallowing in our misery here, no warm temperatures (I am assuming you are talking 40s F? that is warm right now) are to be mentioned.  Sorry.

I'm on my third craft beer here in Wisconsin.  It's been shit weather since Friday and we haven't left the house other than to shovel.  Thank God I thought to get groceries on Friday and stocked up on the sugar and alcohol.  The cookies didn't make it past Saturday morning.  Seriously fuck this winter.

Another SW Ontarian here.  We've got 4 inches of solid ice on our deck - you could ice skate out there.  Neighbour's tree is swaying dangerously close to our house because of the ice on it.  I am so done with the winter that never ends.   I ate cherry tarts and chocolate today to console myself.

And I am no longer on speaking terms with my post-menopausal high school friend who now lives in Tucson AZ and usually complains about the heat.  Nangirl17, I would be happy to introduce you to her so that you can talk some sense into her.  Never heard the word "snain" before, but thank you for that.  I guess.

To add insult to injury, I looked at the long-term 14-day forecast here, and the HIGH TEMP for April 28 and 29 is SIX SEVEN DEGREES C.  WTF?!?

Edit:  Seven degrees, not six degrees, and only on April 29.  Break out the champagne on the 28th, and then the Prozac on the 29th.

Freezing rain here, Eastern Ontario.

We went away for ~2 weeks in the middle-end of March, thinking winter would mostly be done when we got back (in fact, it was pretty decent for a couple of weeks in Feb).

I want out. Unfortunately my wife's network is here. And... gotta do taxes in April, right?!

Another SW Ontarian here and just feeling so down.  I fed the birds because I feel so bad for the poor robins and red-winged black birds with nothing to eat.  I put out corn, peanuts and sunflower seeds.  Hope that will hold them over until whenever this bloody ends!

Maybe this will cheer some of you up. It's an article about the Forest Lake, Minnesota Fire Department opening its doors during Saturday's blizzard so teens could take their prom photos there. Cool story!  (Even the comments section is positive.)

Okay, back to the real topic of this thread.
The baseball stadium pics over the past few days are especially...ummm...out of place. I just don't expect baseball games to be cancelled because of snow.

We had an ice storm last night too.  I recommend lots of hot yoga during the winter (Er, spring??), and I run outside whenever possible in all temps (except can’t run on the skating rink today).  There’s a section of bike trail near me that gets plowed in the winter, though, and the run outside really helps.

I had to get in the pool this weekend to warm up!  No complaints from me on the low temperatures since I'm a long distance runner, but the 20 mph winds really sucked.

Ottawa right now wind 31 km/h, gusts 46 km/h (19 and 29 in m/h), stronger this afternoon. Home wind 53 km/h, 79 km/h gusts (33/49 m/h).  So glad I had hurricane proof shingles put on when I had the roof redone.

I'm just north of the city and Saturday was magical. We went for a hike and I was in a tank and shorts (it was low 70s on the hills by the lake near me, which I'm not complaining about at all). Only brought one change of clothes (another tank and pair of shorts) to change into, so when the temp dropped to low 40's/upper 30's that night... that sucked. We toughed it out and stood in line for ice cream anyway cuz that was our plan all day, but oh man. No snow here, but we're stuck in those temps with cold dreary rain again.

MN as well. My flight for a long weekend (Sat-Tues) was cancelled on Saturday. So instead of beautiful weather and a couple days off work, I instead got to sit inside my house and watch the blizzard for 48 hours. Oh, and I got to pay for a nonrefundable hotel too!

My area got between 4-6 inches of very wet snow yesterday morning.  The area schools were cancelled today.  I don't know why, except they had an extra snow day to burn. The roads were all cleared by this morning. The main roads were already cleared early yesterday.  My school district has been very stupid with the cancellations the last couple years.  If I were working (and I will be again soon), that would have been a lot more money to pay for daycare that shouldn't have been necessary.  My 8 yo was supposed to have little league practice tonight. A memory on my FB page popped up today--2 years ago it was so hot that my kids were wearing shorts! And this year, snowpants.

That was about the only nice day we've had all year.  It was a good life decision to visit that day, and equally good to go back before this happened:

Wind was howling so this morning that I expected to see the Wicked Witch of the East peddling on her bicycle. But now we are back to spring again as if it never happened.

I live and work in the Phoenix area. We should be hitting 100F any day now.  Last year I lived in CO and was ankle-deep in snow at this time.  Two of my employees didn't make it in today because they got snow in Kentucky and flights cancelled.

Yeah, we lost power due to severe weather here in Florida. So, I walked outside after the rain stopped and enjoyed the remaining sunlight and high 60's temperature.

I did get to hear about all the ice storms from my family who still lives in Michigan. It's one of the reason I got out when I could.

Is there any end in sight to this?  I trudged into work today; no point in trying to bike.  The walk was treacherous because it's an ankle-twisting rock-solid mix of hard-packed snow and ice out there.  No one bothers to clear the sidewalks and the streets are still a mess.  And this is the view of our company deck from my office window.  BBQ, anyone?

I think we got off quite lightly, then - west of Ottawa. Hmm. There is still some ice on our drive but it isn't too bad.

Heard a forecaster refer to yesterday as the 106th day of January.  That made me laugh.

We got our contract for summer lawn care this morning, which also made me laugh.  Right now it looks more like snow removal time out there.  (yes, we pay for both.  We're retired, and happily not doing either any more.)

Yes, it seems like much of the US and Canada can't get a break this winter, including the southeast.

Meanwhile, in California, nice and sunny.

Most of my family in the northeast wouldn't want to switch though, with our recent wildfires, mudslides, and an earthquake.

sunny here too :) though as with you, we've also got bushfires (2 months after the usual summer bushfire season ended!)
