Democrats or Republicans will win most races.

To the extent Democrats win, health insurance may be less expensive in the long run.

To the extent Republicans win, IRAs and 401ks and "wealth" are less likely to be taxed in the future.

Partisans on both sides will argue strenuously that their party is best for the middle class, while spending most of their time and efforts on their own re-election.

In the end, what you do personally will matter much more  to your own situation than which party wins more races.

The election could affect my FIRE date, because if the Republicans win it could lead to even worse anti-teacher laws being passed.  Already, my pay has been cut for the past five straight years while my work hours have been increased by about 25% over that same time period through increased regulations from our Republican-led state government.  The GOP hates teachers because we are unionized state employees in most states.  If the Democrats win, there will still be anti-teacher laws passed (like the stupid Race To The Top nonsense), but they won't be quite as painful.

Stop watching the news  :)

There's a whole article on this blog which talks about how useless questions like this are.     Look at the picture, not short term news

OP is looking at the big picture, though.  Day to day polling results are high-information noise.  But understanding underlying issues in order to determine how to vote, and considering the macro-level results, is exactly what we should be doing.

When Obama is elected to a third term we will all be able to FIRE immediately.  Thanks to George W. Bush for laying the foundation.  Two great guys.  I love politics.

Looking back at the history, I've always done better when Republicans are in control.  However, I'm still working.  If I look back as if I was retired, I would have done better during the periods of control by Democrats.

What election?    Just kidding...I did vote.   Won't have any impact as far as I can tell.   The most significant issue in the future will be the taxation laws for dividends and capital gains, since that will be the bulk of my income.    I am not even counting on social security, so the taxation of this will not really matter.   Medical costs will be an issue.   I am not sure how either part will affect this.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
