Alright Cubs fans...lemme hear ya!
« on: October 16, 2016, 11:55:51 AM »
Although I don't live in Chicago, my roots are there.  We're flying the W today, and I'm fairly certain most people in our neighborhood have no idea what it's for! We live in Cardinals territory now, where being a Cubs fan is a pretty thankless job.

Mom grew up a block from Wrigley Field in a brownstone on Addison. Being a Cubs fan is a genetic defect thing for me. Grandma went to her grave never having seen her Cubbies win a World Series. Pretty certain she's up there hoping to be able to celebrate this year with Ernie, Ron, Harry, and a bazillion other diehard fans who are no longer with us.

Go Cubbies!

I'm a lifelong Cubs fan living in Houston. I am loving this season and also biting my nails off watching it! Go Cubbies!

Please tell me last night did not really happen, and instead, I was in some non-parallel universe. Ugh.

All I hear at work these days are "cubs this, cubs that". I honestly do not see the appeal of team sports AT ALL. Can someone please tell me why it's so interesting to watch some guys hitting a tiny ball every 10 minutes while spitting from time to time?

Also, can someone give me a cliff note version of what's going on? I am surrounded by cubs fans and I need something to say from time to time :)

Life long Cubs fan checking in. I live about 1300 miles from Wrigley now, but I am definitely with everyone in spirit. I'll be watching every minute of the Series.

It's funny how sports can bring back memories. When I was a kid, I used to come home from school and watch the games (all in the afternoon before Wrigley had lights) with my grandmother. She had a 13" tv in the kitchen. She lived her whole life without seeing the Cubbies win the series and I think she went to her grave cursing Leon Durham and the missed ground ball. It's probably for the best she passed before the Bartman Incident!

"Hey Chicago, whaddya say? The Cubs are gonna' win today!"

The Cubs last went to the World Series in 1945. They last won the World Series in 1908. With only 30 teams in Major League Baseball (and 14 of them created since 1960), this is a spectacularly long time to not be in/win the championship series. I'm a Giant's fan. When the Giant's faced the Cubs in the NLDS that I knew I would be rooting for the winner of that series to go all the way even if my team lost (I would have preferred the Cubs win last year as predicted in Back to the Future and Giant's continue their even year streak).

Here's something you can say this week: "I'm not a fan, but I'm really happy for you. Good luck."

As a Clevelander AND a Cubs fan, I'm loving this.

I was at the game when the Indians won the ALCS in 1995, and this just brings back all kinds of good childhood feelings.

I'm just trying to decide whether or not to get an Indians hat to pair with my "1908 World Champions" Cubs shirt ...

I'm guessing you're not very well-liked at the office right now, all in good fun, of course!

Definitely get the hat to pair with the shirt. It'll be fun to confuse people!

I try not to draw too much attention to it (though there is one other hardcore Cubs fan), and work dress code disallows t-shirts and hats. :)

A ONE! A TWO! A THREE!

Die hard here. Was living in Bucktown until about 1.5 months ago, still work in the loop. West burbs now. I'm dying here at work. Just antsy.

I'm trying to get a ticket, but I just can't justify it at the prices--hoping I get lucky. I might go down to Wrigley after work on Friday and attempt to buy a ticket at the gate. Who knows?

Good luck - I hope you get in!

Games like last night's are the reason I can't pull the trigger and pay what people are asking for tickets. Soul. Crushing.

I did! I ended up in standing room for game 3, heartbreaking to lose by the single run. But it was a great experience, and 5 days later I still have no buyers remorse, so I'm happy! For inquiring minds, I talked a [licensed] broker down on the street outside the field to $1,240. Cheapest I've heard anyone get in on the secondary market.

I'm at a technical conf in Cleveland today, and word is you can buy a ticket after the first inning for 200ish. I'm thinking of trying to do that...  but it's tough since im not much of a baseball fan.

My Dad loved the Cubs and we lived about an hour away.  My boys would watch with him and now my youngest is following the game only because of memories with his Grandfather.  Go Cubbies:))

Just saw this post... Live long Cub fan here! I grow up just off Addison, and we would go to the games when I was in high school and get a $5 bleacher seat on the day of the games. I'm thrilled for the team and the city. My family is going nuts over this. I live 75 miles away now, but on the day they clinched the NL championship I was at my childhood home, we could hear the singing from Clark and Addison. IT.WAS.THE.BEST!!

I can barely watch the World Series games, I'm so stressed out about it.

Good for you!!!!  My cousin and uncle went to Saturday's game. Heartbreaking loss, but they thoroughly enjoyed the once-in-a-lifetime experience nonetheless. No regrets for them, either.

Lifelong Cards fan checking in to say congrats.  Cards v. Cubs series are my favorite sports rivalry.  Hopefully we'll be better next year.  Until then, FLY THE W (and I just threw up a little bit).  See you next year.

As a life-long Red Sox fan I'd like to congratulate the Chicago Cubs.  It felt great to get that monkey off our backs, as I'm sure it will for you too.
Just beware - you're likely to go through an identify crisis over the next few years. No longer can you be the team that doesn't win it all.

For me, the best moment watching this world series was watching the fans sing after Game 5. Congrats to all those faithful Cubs fans - you deserve it.

Not a superstitious person at all, but watching the cubs blow a 4 run lead through a series of terrible plays the likes of which I've only ever seen in montages of all of the errors in an entire season made me really wonder if they actually were cursed.

When that catcher made that terrible throw to first base (which, admittedly, was a tough throw from facing the wrong direction off the wrong foot moving at full speed the other way as a really old player in the last game of your career) I was just *facepalm*.

It was the most interesting baseball game I'd watched in years.  Made me glad I'd dug the antenna out and hooked up the TV.  One of the greatest all time moments in sports.  And then a rain delay after a scoreless 9th inning!  I was so tired!

What I kept thinking was how cool it would be to have been on either team.  Sure you want the win, but even the Cleveland players can say they were at the ending of the longest championship drought in US sporting history.

Being the losing team that allows the other team to break a curse is not fun.  We ended the BoSox "curse" AND we had to deal with Jimmy Fallon filming Fever Pitch.  I still have flashbacks.

I think the Indians and Cubs were the two best teams to temporarily divert the nation from this miserable campaign season.  That alone was worth now having to deal with Cubs fans.  Congrats again.  No fan base deserved it more.

To be fair, Jimmy Fallon had to refilm the ending because they just assumed that the season would end in postseason disappointment like all the others.  If that doesn't sum up redox mentality pre 2004, I don't know what does.

There's a soft spot in my heart for the Royals. I lived in Columbia during the I-70 World Series (1985?), so we were smack dab in the middle of the two cities/teams. Everybody at school, with the exception of me and one guy friend, was rooting for the Cardinals. Royals won!

Good for you! I'm a Mizzou alum and it was not easy being a die-hard Royals fan (back when they mostly sucked) in a sea of Cardinals fans. We got our just deserts last year, though!

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
