The stock market isn't the economy. The economy also isn't the only issue worth considering when voting. There are about a thousand reasons why I want Trump and congressional Republicans out of office, but a temporary drop in stock prices is really, really low on that list.

Trump and friends will likely be blaming Obama and Clinton for the rest of Trump's life and beyond.

Trump once said in response to the suggestion that he is not known for being humble:

"I think I am, actually humble. I think I'm much more humble than you would understand."

Nothing can be a surprise anymore. Trump speaks single sentences which contradict themselves. Late night shows don't know what to do with all the material he gives them. That being said some people will still support him despite the stupid words he speaks. In theory, I can understand that if you put more weight on policy and actions than words, that's fine.

But I think what is telling of his supporters is that they can't even make fun of the obviously silly things he says. I remember the good old days of (some) republicans and democrats laughing at Bushisms together. How many democrats have said "I did not ________" in Bill's voice. We've always made fun of the president when they stutter or mix up words or contradict themselves.

So if Trump claims victory for rising stocks I almost feel we are obligated to poke some fun when things go the other way. +1 respect for any Trump supporter who can acknowledge this. Or at least admit that the quote at the top of this post was an assinine thing to say.

And finally your candidate lost 307 - 232. Sour grapes.

This line right here sums up everything that's wrong with American politics.

I really don't get why some people think this proves anything. It's not like a football game where one team wins and their fans poke fun at the other team's fans until next year's game. It's more like a test, most of the people who took it got the wrong answer, and now they make fun of the kids who got the right answer because they're in the minority.

And yes, I do realize that he lost the popular vote but that ruins my analogy so like Trump I will be ignoring that fact :)

For the first time in our marriage, my wife actually told me yesterday "I don't want to hear about how much money we lost." Haha I just laughed and told her it's not a bad thing. We have years until we are planning to start tapping into that money.

At this point it needs to stay down til 2/28 when my next work based investment is processed!! Would be a shame if mid month sales were erased before the time I could invest

Also stocks are at this moment still up 32% since Trump took office.

Yup.

Who cares about a what, 8% drop, that takes us back to the levels of a whole 2-months ago, when you are still up HUGE.

If the Dems think this is a "winner" of an idea, they are even dumber than I thought.

FWIW, I have no use for Trump (and I for damned sure had no use for Hillary), but come on, any investor knows the market has soared while Trump was in office, even with the latest minor hiccup.

Dems are grasping at straws...

Really why does what anyone think really matter?

Oh yeah, back to the issue at hand: So far I've lost roughly $70k USD during the Great Trump Dump of 2018.

You didn't lose anything, unless you bought at the high, then foolishly panic sold during the sell off.

On paper (because I haven't sold- it's important that people realize they don't lose or gain anything until they sell), I'm still up well over $1,000,000 since Trump took office.

It's kinda hard to sell that to investors as a "bad" thing about the Trump Presidency when they are still sitting on what, 30% gains even after the "sell off" that took us back to levels not seen since, um, December?

It might sell to idiots that don't invest and don't understand the markets, though.

But those folks are probably going to vote Dem anyway, right?

Didn't vote for Trump in '16, won't vote for him in '20, but this line of "reasoning" is ridiculous...

I should hope so, since it's clearly meant to be funny. As stated several times in this thread.

The way I see it this thread has nothing to do with the economy, it has everything to do with Trump's extremely predictable and immature personality.

Let's not forget that the U.S. Fed policy / banking market was the trigger of the *2007-2009* crash...

*Edit

EXACTLY. Policy often takes YEARS to show the true effect.

QE had an immediate impact that many argue prevented a depression. We did not have one, so the crystal ball conclusion depends on what side you are on. Either Obama saved a meltdown, or he just doomed us to decades of debt we can not pay back.

Tax cuts will have the same storied ending, and spun to benefit those looking into the crystal ball. It's easy. I'll do it now.

Look forward to 2020 (gee, that is an election year, right). Market is down from today. Unemployment rising slightly. Interest rates 40% higher than today. Deficit spending is highest it has been since 2009:

1. SEE. Those tax cuts were devastating. It destroyed everything Obama worked for. Damn Trump. BOOOOO.

2. Obama had things so screwed up. Certainly you don't expect Trump to fix it overnight, do you. Give his policies time. America is winning!

The more things change.

Wait, so that's what realized gains and losses are?! I thought it meant changes since the last time you looked at your account and "realized" wtf was going on.

I also thought people that take stupid political jokes seriously are snowflakes. That's what I keep seeing on the interwebs anyway. But hey, if ya wanna get serious, compare the market performance from Obama's inauguration to Feb 14 2010 vs Trump's so far. Hint: it'd be even harder to sell Obama as "bad" thing to an apolitical investor.
