I had a Roku early in my streaming adventures and really liked it! I actually use an Apple TV now because it works well with my other Apple devices, which I have because they are most compatible with my hearing aid. One nice change recently is that Apple devices show Amazon content, and Amazon devices show Apple content. Much simpler!
I also have an Amazon Firestick that I used before Apple started allowing Amazon content on its devices. I found it to be sort of underpowered and had problems with hanging and downloading (I also do not have the world's best Internet.) I believe Amazon also has a full-size "box" like a Roku that might work better.

I feel like I've heard the most positives things about Roku boxes. Personally, I have a TV with a built-in Roku. It does the job, and is compatible with everything I've cared about (Netflix, Amazon, HBO Now, Plex).

Just my 2 cents. I have Chromecast and so far I'm not that impressed. But I haven't used it very often. Have heard good things about Roku (more options, for e.g.).

sounds like roku then. thanks.

Another vote for Roku. We have had 3-4 over the years. First one was probably the original. Not sure how long we have been using their devices but probably 6-7 years at least.
We have an AppleTV for one service that my wife found did not work well on Roku.
P.S. Setting up an Apple TV without any other Apple devices is a PITA!
