Socks in Bed - Yes/No
« on: February 03, 2025, 07:54:13 PM »
Things are happening in America that upset me greatly, but I still think there is room for another great debate. Socks while sleeping - yes, no, or depends.

I am firmly no. Nearly as bad as touching microfiber. My only deviation is the deepest of winter.

No way. I sleep hot and socks are just too constricting.

Like you, I make an exception if it's really f'ing cold. That usually only happens when I'm winter camping.

Sometimes in winter I'll wear socks in bed for the first 10 minutes or so, until the sheets--and I--are sufficiently warm.  Then they must go.

Not unless I’m really cold and my feet won’t warm up otherwise. But I hate wearing socks even then because my toes cramp up.

I like socks in bed. Not now, in the middle of a summer heatwave, but at the right time of year, when my feet get cold, definitely yes.

My feet have to be icicles for me to resort to such a desperate measure.

If you are one of those people I see casually strolling filthy sidewalks and parking lots barefoot, I'm afraid I would have to insist on socks.

I have to have long socks on my feet in bed or my cold feet will keep me awake. Even in the summer.

I love the sock debate! I cannot go to sleep if my feet are cold. My husband has declared that putting my cold feet on him was not a part of our wedding vows. A heating pad or a hot water bottle never warms the whole foot. So, on occasion, I resort to socks. But like Villanelle, they cannot be worn for long.

Also, agree vehemently re. microfiber. It is clearly made by the devil.

Oh hell no to socks in bed.

Also, sheets must be completely untucked so feet can escape for temperature regulation.

I used to, in winter, as I like the room temperature on the cool side, but I’ve switched to a Magic Bag.  It starts out piping hot and can be wrapped around the feet, plus it gradually cools off once I’m nice and toasty.

I used to sometimes when I was young.  Since perimenopause and menopause I sleep so hot that socks in bed are unbearable.  In fact, the ability to stick my feet out from under the covers is of utmost importance, so I absolutely hate hotel beds with the sheet all tucked in on the bottom...

This is the secondary debate necessary to have in this thread.

No unless it's really cold, then they have to be real wool. Those "fuzzy" polyester socks just trap sweat and turn into a cold wet mess.

I'm with you on the microfiber too, though its ok for dish cloths.. There's a certain type of blanket that was common when I was a kid that I absolutely couldn't stand. I didn't know how to describe it so I just called it "icky". The new kind don't seem as bad but we have one with fake fur on the back that one of my kids hates.

I'm a hot sleeper. The barest minimum insulation please.

If it gets THAT cold I'll wear more clothes to bed or pull DW closer. Socks might be the last thing I add to the sleep wardrobe.

No socks in bed!

A long while ago I discovered that all of my issues related to overheating while sleeping seem to be related to synthetic fabrics.  We keep the house about 16-17C (60-62 F for the metric challenged) in the winter and a thin wool blanket with a thin cotton throw overtop of cotton sheets keeps me comfy and doesn't make me sweat.  No need for socks ever.

Hell yes for socks in bed! It's uncomfortable to sleep when my feet are cold, and god help me if one of those ice cubes sweeps against a warm calf... I'm very happy to wear my socks. Should I become too warm, they can drop off the cliff next to the bed. Fun topic!

We keep it at 55 in the bedroom during the winter, so I will occasionally warm up the bed with my wool socks before shucking them later.

Most of the time, no. Even in the dead of winter, socks get too sweaty and uncomfortable under the covers.

I do have a set of fuzzy grippy socks that seem to breathe much better than ordinary socks. I guess it's similar to "fleece" material, though the texture is a bit different? They're simultaneously warmer than my regular socks, and yet more comfortable to wear in bed. Unfortunately they don't look much like "real" socks, nor do they fit well in all of my shoes, so I can't just replace all my regular socks with these.

One of my kids loves those. The other one doesn't wear socks or shoes at all unless he absolutely has to.

In winter, yes. Clean socks put on immediately beforehand.

That time of year my drafty old apartment with electric baseboard heaters can apparently only be slightly too cold or randomly sweltering with no in between. I obviously err on the side of it being too cold so I don't wake up sweaty and have to throw the covers off a couple times a night. Once burrowed in it's fine and I sleep great. It is a bit reminiscent of camping.

I don't, but I also don't have the aversion some seem to have to socks in bed. I don't because they're not needed for me to be warm. Obviously, if there are unusual circumstances then socks may happen.

After having to wear socks to bed as a kid (to treat a skin issue) and also having a mother enamored of those footy-pajamas (which are hot enough to bake a potato)...

No.

This is what I do. My husband gets annoyed because discarded socks pile up under the sheet at the foot of the best. I say, it's better than using him as a foot warmer.

This: my heels get so dry they start cracking in winter and spring.  So I occasionally put on lotion and then socks (to protect the sheets and keep the lotion on my feet). Otherwise, absolutely not!

I always wear socks. All the time. Everywhere.

I only take my socks off when I shower. Then I put on new socks right after the shower.

I don't really need them to keep me warm, I just really love socks. They're probably my favorite article of clothing.

I am in agreement with this almost entirely, but my exceptions include bed, the beach and when wearing sandals. (I'm one of those people who doesn't like wearing shoes without socks, so I have little hidden socks for boat shoes, Vans, etc.)

Hard pass on socks in bed.

We keep our bedroom really cold in the winter (like 50s) but have a heated mattress pad so the bed itself is cozy warm when we get in.  We then turn it off and sleep under down covers and it stays warm all night.

Nope, don't care how cold it gets. No toe torture devices while trying to sleep (socks get Ideas when they're under covers - they seem mild mannered enough the rest of the time).

Socks in bed? Yes!  BF got me a special "collection" of 15 pairs of Christmas dog socks to wear in bed. Apparently like @Ladychips  I have freezing feet and he's getting sick of me tying to warm them up on him ;-). :Yes they are all different and just as cute.

What is this aversion to socks? I'm genuinely flummoxed. If it's cold I use them, if it's not, I don't. We keep the thermostat low enough in the winter that is generally cold enough. What on earth is the problem with that?!?
