... apparently I have been mispronouncing FrugalToque's name for years.

As I had been mispronouncing yours for years!  I just never 'saw' your name.  The lack of spaces did me in.  :-/

No worries, SP lash NC ash!  I like the rhyme to your name.

“Toke.” American, I didn’t know what it was but I guess drew my pronunciation from torque.

I mean, there are numerous American accents, hundreds? of British ones, and at least two Canadian (haha).

I'd say there are four, maybe five Canadian accents (not including Indigenous).    Newfie, Maritimer, Quebecer, Ontario/Prairie and Mountain/Coast/North.     The first three for a "fer shure" and you could probably just lump the rest of us together.

Newfie is a distinct language, not an accent.

Newfie is a distinct language, not an accent.

It has a few distinct words, and uses a few others in ways at odds with the rest of the English speaking world, but it's probably not a completely separate language:

"What are y'at?" ->  What are you doing?
"Where're yuh to?" -> Where are you going?
"Bye" -> boy

And so forth.

But mostly, it's just a really difficult accent to understand that leaves the rest of us scratching our heads.

Toque.

Yeah, uh ...

"Toque" rhymes with "Duke".#

Why is that not one of the options in the poll?

Toke (like one toke over the line ...) and two-k are not the same as toque=duke.

I knew it was toque/duke because DH lived in Canada for a few months and educated me.

Everything I know about Canada I learned from Bob and Doug McKenzie.  They pronounced it with the u sound, therefore, that is the only acceptable pronunciation.

If you need more proof, the most famous Canadian of all time Geddy Lee pronounces it the same way.  Check out 53 seconds in to the hit single Take Off!

I was pronouncing it in two syllables. Two Kay. The dash between two and k made me think you were delineating that. Like how tuque would sound in Spanish.

That would be "two-kay".

How do you phonetically write the "k" (as in the initial sound in "cat") without special phonetic characters?

In other words, write the two-k (rhymes with duke) with just normal characters.

Anyways, the two-k option rhymes with duke. :)

The issue wasn't the letters. It was the dash. Dashes are used to break words up in between syllables, especially in books when a word is too long to fit entire-
ly (see what I did there? ;) ) on the same line. That being said, I recognize that twok would be even more confusing.

I would have either written it as toook to emphasize the oo and differentiate from took. But rhymes with duke is crystal clear. :)

I'm 100% with ARS on this one.  "twok" is the sound of a thin wooden switch hitting a bottom.  "Two-k" rhymes with 'duke'.

(Although to be fair, just writing 'duke', 'fluke', or 'puke' probably would have been clearer.)

Yeah. It seems most people got it, but there was enough confusion that I could have been clearer. Didn't think of the rhyming thing at the time, but comments brought that up quickly. :)

Glad I'm not the only one who read it as two-kay due to the dash!  I thought it was supposed to be a take on two-four and Jacob Two-Two.  None of the choices made sense to me (American watching Canadian TV channels).
