+1 to Cathy.

Content trumps all.
I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.
If you want to know more about me, this Business Insider profile tells the story pretty well.
I (rarely) blog at AdventuringAlong.com. Check out the Now page to see what I'm up to currently.

Frequent, regular posts as well.

You can have the best content in the world, but if you are only posting once a month, people aren't apt to check it.

And of course, make sure it's a relevant topic that people want to read about.  (By that token, while you don't want to be too specific, be aware some broad content areas are quite saturated with bloggers.)

Yup. Great content + frequent posting. The frequent posting bit is most important while establishing a following. Once you have a large body of good content, you can retain old and attract new followers while posting less frequently (see: MMM)

As a blogger myself, I often ask myself that question.  And especially when running a financial blog, there is one thing that I believe is critical in establishing a long-lasting following.

In addition to high quality content, offer something new.

By this, what I really mean is write about your personal experiences, and actually make it interesting.  One of the things that I believe has made this MMM blog so fucking well-read is how the dude incorporates his own life into his blog posts and then relates those experiences to the concept that he is writing about.  For example, MMM wrote a blog post making fun of the doomsday'ers, basically arguing that things aren't all going to shit as they would claim.  In fact, everything is fucking awesome.  But, he started off his post with a discussion about his nail gun that he uses to build houses, and then related that nail gun to the fact that things really are great around here.  People aren't all going to just die off tomorrow.  The nuclear holocaust isn't right around the corner.  Things are okay.

It's both personal AND interesting.  If you can combine those two qualities, along with an ability to write fairly well, then I believe you are setting yourself up to run a very successful blog.

Why not build up a months worth of content before you start? That way if you slip behind you have a bit of lee-way.

Allow your full post to be viewable in a reader.  I don't keep up with blogs if they don't allow the whole post in the reader.  If I find a post interesting, I click through to read the blog comments.

If I wanted to make money blogging, I sure as hell wouldn't try to start the 500,000th early retirement/frugality blog.  Lots of competition there, and I don't believe this is an under-served market.  Plus, why would you try to monetize a blog devoted to people that don't like spending money?  I mean, there's only so many people who will click on your Personal Capital affiliate link.  At least I hope there is anyway.

Here, look.  This is a blog I like.  This guy writes in an interesting way and has interesting content, in my opinion.  But I doubt he's making any more than a couple bucks with this blog.

Thanks for the blog recommendation.  I wish he posted more pictures of his dog.  The Frugalwoods have a great blog (http://www.frugalwoods.com/) with TONS of pictures of their dog.
