This IS the act that says all state IDs have to conform to nationals standards. I recently read about this in one of my local papers that said that implementing this would cost significant money and if it is not implemented those in states whose drivers license were not updated could be be prevented from boarding domestic flights(assuming they didn't have a passport).

here is a huff po article for those interested.

The state I live in (KY) is one that keeps filing for extensions. I think that by this summer I won't be able to board commercial aircraft (charter flights excepted) or enter federal property using only my state issued driver's license. I'd have to get a passport.

Recent local news items says that people in Kentucky will soon have an option to get a Real ID compliant license, or a regular license.

I'm surprised that the news items have not mentioned the effect that the Trump administration may have on enforcing the law. I could just about see Trump going either way, calling it over regulation, or saying it is necessary to keep out illegal immigrants and terrorists.

I was in MO a couple of weeks ago. They're also one of the states that don't want to conform to RealID and it was getting a fair bit of airplay on the radio.

Essentially states and DHS are in a big game of chicken, waiting to see if one of them blinks before the ridiculous meltdown that refusing to let people get on airplanes would be.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Wasn't this a big thing in MN because people couldn't get on airplanes without a passport or similar?

Right now Missouri, Minnesota, Montana, Maine,* and Washington are all in the position to trying to make DHS blink before their residents stop being able to use drivers licenses to get on planes next January.  20 other states have an extension before DHS would make their IDs invalid.

*4 of 8 states that start with the letter M are fighting real id, 1 of 42 states that don't start with the letter M are. This relationship would be considered statistically significant (p = .0014 Fisher Exact Test). Which means absolutely nothing, it's just odd.
